I've recently discovered that when my mother-in-law wants my kids off of my digital storm PC, she walks up and hard shuts off the PC, regardless of what they, or the pc, is doing.
Can doing this cause harm to my software/hardware? I wanna know to determine how big of a nerf bat I hit her with. |

.... Not good. AFAIK, on a 1-10 scale it's like an 8. There is a reason there is a shut down process on these machines.
I would have a word with her. |

Yeah I don't recommend this at all (hard shutting off the PC, the mother-in-law + nerf bat scenario is on you ). While the hardware will probably be ok (unless this is happening very constantly), there is a huge risk for software/OS issues to crop up.
In addition to the nerf bat, some basic PC training might be in order. |

Don't shutdown the pc, turn the monitor off if that is her way.
If kids don't follow directions while using pc, including stop using the pc, then their ability to use the pc will be terminated, No More PC. |

Hard shutdowns are a good way to corrupt files and cause issues. Everyone has to do it on rare occasions when the pc won’t shutdown or power failures, but not a good idea.

Like DST4ME stated, it is much easier, quicker and safer to turn off the monitor. Your mother in law will appreciate your shortcut. She won't have to hold the power button a long time.

I agree with DST. You don't want your PC to be damaged. |
