Just in general (rig specs below) - under normal circumstances, whats the life expectancy nowadays? Anyone ever have a rig more than 5yrs old?

I just replaced my i7-930 that was nearing 5 yrs old. I could have gone on longer if it was overclocked and upgraded the GPU, but there were other parts of the system (namely I/O) I wanted/needed upgrading of, as well.

Laptops in my experience don't last as long as desktops

If you take care of your desktop, with normal use I expect 4+ years. A typical issue would be a hard drive failing I think. Or possibly a power supply. I think both of those are unlikely with good PSUs and HDs.

At about 5 years, your CPU might be limiting you, or the tech has changed enough that you can't just plug in a new GPU

A good GPU might get you through 3+ years or more, depending on your propensity to buy the most demanding games. One can always lower settings to manage, but there can come a time where one game is just too much for your rig, and a GPU upgrade seems like throwing good money at an obsolete rig

The Longest I went with an computer was 8 yrs and that was with an old --- ----, mainly because at the time I was not doing much more than Word Processing and use of the internet, so I never had the need to upgrade,, once I started gaming and using my computer for other things and needed to upgrade it had to be replaced, even though it still worked

Treat your computer well, clean it out when it needs it, do not abuse it and it should last you 4-6 yrs, or a bit longer if you upgrade

I am hoping to go at least 2-3 years before I upgrade and when I do upgrade it will likely be replacing my CPU and/or GPU which would hopefully give me another 3 maybe 4 yrs if I am lucky and nothing fails

It is kind of like your car initially you repair things when they go bad but eventually you look at the age , the cost of the repair and the likelihood of what is coming down the road and decide that any further investment into an older car is just not worth it ( esp if it has no collectors value) and you replace it with a newer model and hope it does not need repairs right away

Same with computers   sometimes the cost of upgrading is as expensive as simply replacing the rig.

My last machine was over 10 when I replaced it. The only thing holding it together was a prayer and some rust.

I would think a 4-5 year cycle would be optimum.

The general rule is 2-3 years for the gpu and 4-5 years for the cpu to stay about the same but depends on one's demands.

My current PC is 8+ years old.  I'm still running dual NVIDIA 8800 GTS with an old AMD Athalon 64-FX 60 Toledo 2.6 GHz dual processor.  Needless to say, it's time for a new one.  I will be upgrading by April at the latest once my tax money comes in and I see what the scoop is on the video card front (AMD Fiji announcement etc).

I looked it up and the PC I am using now was built in '08, so I am pushing 7 years. I upgraded a few years back to GTX275 and it is still running fine. Like other people said, my computer can survive on what's going on now, but it is just too old to last much longer. 7 years is an excellent investment, most people don't even keep their car that long.

I just upgraded my "main" system to the Vanquish because I could not upgrade my other two computers any more than they are now and I need the speed and graphics.

I bought one in 2004 and the other in 2006. Both are core2 quad. I still use both and at times have all three running at the same time.

Get one that you can upgrade as the need arises and you can get 10 years of service easily but most people upgrade at about 5 years or so.

Vanquish II Ultimate.

Depends on a lot of things, I'd suppose. My awesome DS rig is 3.5 years old and still kicking butt. Lasted longer than any other PC I've had which amazes me since it's still 100% as zippy as it was when it shipped. No reason it shouldn't go 5 years or more.

My DS system will be six years old in September '15, and it's still a gaming beast that handle almost every game at high res. About the only thing that can master it is Heaven at Ultra/max tessellation settings  - 20 FPS@3440x1440.

Helps that I've upgraded the GPU (2-3 times - the latest a Titan) and put in some SSD's of course. Low RAM, (only 6Gb) is killin' me, tho'.

I can only hope a new one - if I do stick with DS, and so far they've given me no reason not to - will have this longevity. Most computers conform to that bathtub curve, - they either fail in the 1st year ~, or last a long long time.

I am concerned about the water cooling system - always have been, 'cause if it breaks, fixing it will be less than fun - and of course the CPU, which has been chugging along at 4Ghz for coming up on six years. I do think it's starting to show it's age and mileage with some occasional BSODs, but thankfully they're infrequent (unless you count Elite Dangerous Upset or Batman Arkham City UpsetUpset)

I had the computer before my DS for 7 years. I am in my 6th year with my DS computer. My system is working great but in bad need of a GPU upgrade and my temps are creeping up.

My DS system turned 7 years old in February!  I have upgraded the RAM and the video card... and the HD crashed a few years ago and had to be replaced.  It's still kicking... but I am hoping to upgrade to one of the new Vanquish 3 Level 4's in the near future.
