Topic: Looking to build a second DS gaming rig Posted: 27 Aug 2016 at 10:08pm |
Looking for a second gaming rig. I bought a DS rig last year and love it. The only issues I've ever had on my previous rig was when playing Arma III and my processor bottlenecking. Is it heavy video editing? as you know for the games we recommend the 6700k due to the high cpu speed which games benefit from more than number of cores but if your video editing is heavy then more cores will help that.
So I guess what I'm asking is do you want to stay with the x99 (old platform) or is your vid editing light and we can go to the z170 (the new platform)? |

Changing memory to:
System Memory: 32GB DDR4 3000MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series Thanks for the reply DST4ME As to your questions my friend. 1. Light video editing. Mostly just throwing together short videos for youtube. 2. What will the z170 get me over the X99 Rampage? 3. The 6700 is NOT an available option on the configurator. I'd love to go with 4.0 GHz processor but there are none available on the configurator. |

Looking at motherboard options, all i see are X99.
Why aren't I seeing these other options? Using the configurator, I dont see the 6700 processor or the other motherboard(z170?) you're referencing. Edited by ST7A Bad Karma - 27 Aug 2016 at 10:23pm |

You are mistaken, the 6700k is avaiable you are just not looking at the right place.
6700k is best for arma since the new platform uses utilizes each core much much better then the old platform, and arma loves single core speeds. I would recommend the 6700k with a modest oc to 4.4GHz, forget the 4.0GHz. don't compare z170 mobo to to rampage mobo, I'm referring to sklylake (z170) to brodwell (x99), skylake is much further along in technology than the old brodwell. If skylake had more then 4 cores so that we could lets say compare brodwell 6 core with sklylake 6 core you would see that core for core sklylake would spank brodwell in performance if you will. Now why 32GB of ram if video editing is light then 16GB is to future proof gaming. So is there a reason for 32GB? Sorry I need to ask lot of questions to get the best config based on your needs/wants. Edited by DST4ME - 27 Aug 2016 at 10:26pm |

The more questions the merrier IMO.
So I found the 6700 build. I'm not a very computer savvy guy FYI. Updated my build. 1479616 System Configuration: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Digital Storm Velox Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz (Codename Skylake) (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VIII EXTREME (Intel Z170 Chipset) (Up to 4x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 32GB DDR4 3000MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series Power Supply: 1200W Corsair AX1200i (Digitally Controlled Power) Expansion Bay: Option Not Available Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 8x / CD-Writer 8x) (Internal) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (512GB Samsung 850 PRO) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (2TB Western Digital / Seagate / Hitachi) Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce GTX 1080 8GB (NVIDIA Founders Edition) (VR Ready) Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Z HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D15 (Extreme Performance) HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Cable Management: Premium Cable Management (Strategically Routed & Organized for Airflow) Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks CPU Boost: Stage 1: Overclock CPU - Up to 4.4GHz (Depends on Cooling and Motherboard) Graphics Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) OS Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) |

@ST7A Bad Karma, you build/configs are all over the place, lets get your needs down first and then config a build for you, right now you are just driving yourself crazy for no reason.
the new platform cost less. Your configs are flushing money down the toilet, so let me help you please. So why did you pick 32GB? do you have need for it or is it just something you thought you need? Once I know what you need, I will explain the parts to you so you understand what is going on. Edited by DST4ME - 27 Aug 2016 at 10:43pm |

for the 32 GB just something I thought I might need and it's not that much more money. Future proofing I suppose?
The second build I went with your recommendations with the 6700 processor and the z170 mobo. Those are the only changes unless I made a mistake somewhere. My needs are gaming and I dont want any issues in the next few years. My first rig I ever had built 1GB was a big deal, and I've dealt with overheating in the past, not enough power in the past. I want overkill and no ugly issues rearing their head in the future. Edited by ST7A Bad Karma - 27 Aug 2016 at 10:47pm |

Overkill does not = future proof, checkout people that got sli 680 2 years ago.
What you want to do is what you need nothing more nothing less. more = waste of money, not future proof. I think last question/s: 1. native res of that dell 34" please 2. is here a reason you keep picking the MAXIMUS or RAMPAGE? or is it like the ram, something you thought you might need? 1. Monitor is the same Dell I have on my current Velox.
Dell 3440 x 1440 pixels, 21:9 https://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-34-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B00PXYRMPE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1472364191&sr=1-1&keywords=dell+34+inch+curved+monitor 2. I'd read up quite a bit on the X99 Rampage and it was highly recommended last year on multiple reviews as well as in build recommendations here. Edited by ST7A Bad Karma - 27 Aug 2016 at 11:08pm |

Ok now for the info:
59xx cpus are haswell cpus (these are models before the brodwell cpus like the 68xx cpus). both brodwell and haswell run on x99. these have more than 4 cores and are really more for power users, since gaming barely uses 2 cores let along 4. For example here look at 5960x (8core) and 6950x (10core) vs 6700k and here the 6700k is not even oced yet: As you see higher the res the less the cpu matters. so now we know the 6700k is the way to go for gaming, we look at other things: 1. mobo, here the mobo we need for you is a mobo that can do single/sli gpu. 2. ram, you only need 16GB here to be future proof for games, but dont' be fooled by ram speed, above 2666Mhz ram speed timing becomes more important since the difference in speed becomes unnoticeable. so the 2666mHz ram has better timings then the 3200MHz ram. 3. hdd/ssd, here we give you the fastest ssd (950 pro) if bugdet allows otherwise we go 850 and put the money toward more important things. 4. psu need a psu to run a 1080 gtx here max,a good 750w will do. 5. gpu, for your res all you need is a 1070, 1080 brings you nothing extra nor does it future proof, best thing to do is get a 1070 now and in 2 years upgrade it. 6. cpu as mentioned 6700K oced 7. good cooler for the oc, here noctua is pretty much king in performance and noise till we get to hydrolux lite. 8. oc, here we want a moderate oc so we get a good vcore. If you go with extra fans request that DS connects all your fans to the mobo so you can control them via free software.
My pleasure and good luck Edited by DST4ME - 28 Aug 2016 at 12:09am |
