Team,

The Black Sheep (PC) nears completion.
I have has a second air conditioning system installed in the house to provide dedicated cooling to the room where the Black Sheep will live.  The room will remain approximately 74 degrees year round.

With this fact in mind, would it be a bad idea to power off the black sheep when not in use?  Would this wear out the liquid cooling (as well as other) parts?  Should I leave it on continuously?  I know this is an old debate but I could use some real answers on this one.  Now that the Black Sheep is so close to being reality, I am both excited and nervous.  I really want such a fine display of craftsmanship to live as long as possible.  I know nothing about Liquid Cooling and therefore, would really appreciate anything any of you could give me - however, I am not looking for the ancient debate.

Thanks so much for responding - in advance.

Xii

I would turn it off if you are not using it for more than 6 hours+ especially since you have a very high-end machine. I would agree with leaving a basic system on 24/7, but, in my opinion for a high-end PC, I would say different.

So if I played for like 12+ hours in one day and then went to bed, I should turn it off?  This is my opinion as well.

Given the high amount of respect I have for you, I will let you decide.

Would you rather see this AW meet its end by:
  • - Being thrown in the Ocean
  • - Run over by a truck
  • - Shot with many bullets

I'd like to see a 3-fer.

Run over it, then see how many rounds you can get into it before it hits the waves after slinging towards the water Excited

I see a new sport here.  Old Computer shooting.  Just like Trap Shooting but using old computers (not old DS rigs though) instead of clay birds.
Xii becomes the president of the Old Computer Shooting Association.

With DS as the main sponsor.  All competitors wear DS T-Shirts and shooting vests.

Hi xii,

Glad to hear that you are getting close to receiving
your system. This may be the longest build in history.

I agree that you should turn it down every night. There is some concern that HDD drives have more stress on start up as they spin up and then idle. But HDD are tough and they don't fail very often. Where I think the most stress is caused by turning a computer on and off every time you use it.

Look at it this way. If your fans, LC pump, HDD or what ever has a life expectancy of 50,000 hours. If you operate the computer 24 hours a day then you will have a 5.7 year life expectancy. If you run 12 hours a day then you will double that to 11.4 years. Even if turning the computer on and off shortens the life you will still be ahead overall. This is not very scientific but something to think about.

Frank

As long as you post a video, the anything terrible that you do to it is fine by me (shoot it, light it on fire, drop it a few hundred feet, etc.).
