I posted a thread a few months requesting some guidance for a gaming computer.

Prior configuration provided by DST4ME: 577414

Budget: $2,600 (including computer and monitor).  Computer will be used mainly for gaming (SC2, BF3, Diablo 3, etc.) with web surfing, music, word processing.  Maybe some streaming.

Just a couple updates / questions:

Going to purchase Dell U2312HM running @ 1920 x 1080.  Is a single GTX 570 1.2GB sufficient for running games at the highest settings?

If I get a second monitor (another Dell U2312HM) do I need to add another GTX 570?  Second monitor would be used to just browse internet, music, chat, etc. while playing.

Hearing great things about SSD -- is it highly recommend or something I could purchase in the near future?

While browsing other configurations, it seems like DST4ME really recommends the A70 for CPU cooling.  In the summer, my room can get above 70F, but no higher than 75F.  Is this a problem?  Should I look to liquid cooling instead?

I was reading somewhere that I should tell DS to lower the vcore to 1.4?  I'm guessing this has to do with the voltage to the CPU.  I figured during the stress test, DS would make any necessary changes to system to ensure maximum stability and performance?

Hi Brewtus, welcome back.

DST4ME gave you a good solid build with 577414. The price is $2155 which is within your budget. This system doesn't have a SSD and one 570 1.2. If you only game on one screen you will be ok with the single 570. DST4ME laid it out so you have a good base system that you can later add a SSD and a second GPU. The only change I would make is to get the 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050HX PSU instead of the one he listed. They are the same price but the 1050HX has a seven year warranty. He may have a specific reason for suggesting the other power supply that I am not aware of.

You do want a SSD for sure and you can add one later. Right now it is not in your budget. With 75 degree temperature you should be OK with the A70. But you are right at the point that you don't want any higher room temps. When you reach high room temps it doesn't matter what cooling you have. LC and Air both use ambient air temp to cool your computer. So in both cases you have fans blowing air and high room temps just don't work. As long as you are 75 degrees or below you won't have any cooling problems.

The 1.4 Vcore is not about stability or performance, it is about longevity. Ask DS not to raise the Vcore above 1.4.

Don't forget to order your free T-Shirt.

Frank

Thanks for the response, Frank.

Like I said, that was an older configuration -- I'm not sure if the 1050 W Corsair was available then.  I had full intentions of changing to that power supply.  I also intend to have DS put another 200 mm fan on the top of the case as well.

Do you think I should opt for a better single graphics card for now.  In a year or so, when I purchase an additional monitor go for SLI?

Hi Brewtus good to see you back.

the 1050hx is successor of the 1000 hx, with higher warranty and its even a better psu, it was not out when we had configed that for you.

for gpu, whatever you go with now, you need to stick with and sli, a better gpu is not gonna match sli performance, IMHO sli within a few months then upgrade sli in 2 to 3 years, or whenever it can't give you what you need.

make sure you get an "oem 200mm fan".

I hear what you are saying.

I plan on selecting the 1050 watt PSU and adding an additional OEM 200 mm fan.

Are there any other tips or instructions to give DS, besides setting the vcore to 1.4?

No that should about do it, all you are missing is the ssd and second gpu to complete the system and make it balanced.

That has nothing to do with gpu and sli.

a70/noctua are cpu coolers.

Fair enough -- but I noticed on some configs you recommend the Noctua and on others you recommend the A70

For people that are sensitive to noise I recommend the noctua.

I see DS is offering the new intel 3930k and x79 motherboard.  I was wondering if I should hold off a while until the new release of hardware.

If I'm planning to get a SSD in the relative near future, should I go for a Z68 motherboard instead?

right now depending the x79 can cost more then $500 vs p67, unless you need a 6 core or tri sli, I would go with p67.

you can go with p67/z68 or whatever, ssd is not gonna matter to that.

I think this will be what I order:

Monitor: 23" Dell Ultrasharp IPS

If anyone knows of a better deal let me know.  I'm aware this monitor is going for $239 on eBay, but I'm not fan of buying things off of eBay.

Configuration: 619355

I'm going to ask for an additional OEM 200 MM fan to be installed on top.  Also not to set the vcore above 1.4.

Couple things I've been wondering:

-The generic 1 TB WD hard drive instead of WD Caviar Black
-Noctua over A70?
-If keep A70 is Stage 2 overclocking too much?
-Thinking of going SLI for my birthday next year.  Does the brand of the 570 matter?

1. the 1TB wd bc is chosen for its speeds, other drives don't enjoy the same speeds.

2. both are the same at these levels, noctua is a bit more quiet.

3. a70/noctua can easily handle stage 2 oc.

4. no brand does not matter, you want to make sure to match the clock and vram, otherwise you are only as good as your weak card.

build looks great, no need for corsair ram.

I think I will default to the DS RAM, swap to a 500GB WD Black for the second hard drive, and upgrade the GPU to the 570 2.5GB.

Just keep in mind that the 500GB does not have the 1TB's speeds, IMHO add the 1TB bc when the prices of hdds come back down.

I was thinking of removing the second hard drive all together.  I was able to purchase a 1 TB Seagate Barracuda for a very good price.

If I were to install the barracuda myself, does that void my warranty?

Should I have DS install a wireless card (the Asus model) or by it separately. If so, any recommendations?

Alright looks like I am going to pull the trigger tomorrow morning.  Final configuration:622289

I'll be sure for them to add an OEM 200 MM fan on the top and to set the vcore no higher than 1.4.

Am I missing anything?  Before I pull the trigger, do you think it worst upgrading to the new Intel 3960x / x79 motherboard?

For your config no it is not. The 3960x and X79 are only needed for gaming if you want x3 SLI. With a single GPU or x2 SLI don't waste your money. Any extra money would be better spent on a second 570 to give yourself x2 SLI and/or a secondary HDD for storage.

The only other thing about x79/3930k is that if you have the money, that cpu will stay more powerful in the long run than the 2600k due to the extra cores, but in gaming it should stay the same for now, tho in a few years I'm sure most apps and games will take advantage of the extra cores. jm299 pointed out the rest.

Your build looks great take to oc to stage 2.

I placed my order today.  I spoke with David on the phone.  While discussing my configuration, I instructed I would like the Noctua cpu cooler.  David advocated that the Noctua was really large -- so large that it may restrict me from adding any additional video cards.  David suggested I get the digital storm vortex liquid cooling.

From what I could tell by the case (Haf X) and motherboard (P8P67) I should plenty of space for SLI 570.

What do you think?  Should I switched to liquid cooling?

Not to knock a DS employee but I don't know if he knew what he was talking about. The CPU cooler sits near the top of the MOBO, the GPUs are at the bottom. Adding any more graphics cards will go below the current graphics card that is already coming in your system.

Look at the pics in This thread They are from another customer who has the exact same case as you, the HAF X and the Noctua cooler. Yes you can see the cooler is big but it's in no way blocking the x2 GTX 580 SLI set up. He actually has x2 SLI and a sound card in his PCI slots, the CPU cooler is not in the way.

The only slot it risks blocking is the very top PCI slot and not any of the additional slots where you would add more GPUs later. The most you should do on a Z68 or P67 board is x2 SLI anyways.

The Noctua has better temps then both Stage 2 and Stage 3 liquid cooling.

And yet again more disappointment, forget what the rep told you, he is wrong, as jm299 pointed out it has nothing to do with gpus, thats just absurd.

Keep in mind they are to recommend DS products of course.

stick with the noctua, you don't change the air cooler, there is nothing wrong with that, you change the rep you spoke to.

Not only that but the vortex is louder and does not do as good of a job as the noctua.

what they block a little is the ram slot but installing ram under them if needed is as easy as 1 2 3.

I agree.  I found it funny because when you look at the sample photos for the DS Dreadnought I think it shows a picture of the Noctua installed.

I placed the order Friday night -- still haven't received a confirmation e-mail or invoice.  I'm they were/are extremely busy -- just want to ensure my order went through.

Just got a message from Davis @ DS.  According to Davis, the Noctua NH-D14 doesn't fit in the HAF X case.

Called back to find out what the problem is.  This should be interesting.....

That is not correct boss, I can show you bunch of cases with haf x in the review section with noctua.

if they try to push the vortex on you don't take it, I'm not sure why lately there has been so much misinfo passed on to customers about this, somebody else was told that noctua would block the gpus (not correct) now you are being told it won't fit the haf x, but check out the review section, there are many people with noctua d14 and haf x, there is no reason why it would not fit.

if they can't do it, don't change anything come back here talk to us first, cause we will get you to the right person with the right info.

Apparently the noctua doesn't fit with 16 gb of the corsair dominator ram.   Davis said the noctua blocks 2 of the ram dimms.   Even if I went with 8 gb of ram, 2 of the dimms would be useless.

If I get the a70 that is compatible with the 16 gb pf ram.   I don't know what I should do. Should I get liquid cooling?

Ok well first, thats is not the same as noctua does not fit in haf x.

second, both a70 and noctua "block" the dimms however they don't block it so that you can't put ram on there, they sit on top of the dimms over the ram.

if the problem is heat spreaders from corsair, drop the corsair ram, you don't need it anyways, ram here is pretty much the same, I recommend the DS ram personally unless you are looking for ram with good timing and for that you have to special order that.

Or you can ask them to remove the heat spreaders from those sticks on the dominator so that they fit under the coolers.

for cooling anything you get below stage 4 is going to be inferior to noctua and loud.

At the time, i didn't know the RAM was the problem -- I was just told that the cpu cooler doesn't fit.

The reason I went with the corsair RAM was because it was the only option that offered 2 x 4 GB sticks.  Then I was told it would be difficult to add additional RAM, so I figured I'd get 16 to save some hassle.

According to Davis, if I stick with the noctua I would have to change the corsair RAM.  Davis also said even if I drop the corsair RAM, the dimms furthermost to the left would be inaccessible because of the noctua.

I see the picture you posted -- I'm just telling you what I was told.

Another option would be to keep the same RAM and get the A70.

Or I guess I could do liquid cooling.
