Hello everyone -

I'm purchasing a new gaming rig. I generally play FPS games (mostly LFD2 now) but I plan on playing SC2, Diablo 3, etc and the new Star Wars MMO when it comes out.

I play on a 24" Dell LCD.

I've listed my config below. Any comments, suggestions?

I have a 2k budget. My old gaming rig is dead so I need to make the purchase soon.

I used Tom's Hardware and MaximumPC to come up with these specs.

I had a couple of questions.

Why the 932 case instead of the 922? For improved air flow and possible upgrades in the future? I.e. if I wanted to get a 2nd video card in the future, is easier to put it in the larger case?

Why the LE mobo instead of the micro? Possible upgrades? Is it easier to put a 2nd video card on this mobo?

Also, it's less expensive to get the Liquid Cooling instead of the air cooling. Will that work with the overclocked CPU? Or do I need to use the Air Cooling?
i.e. Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Asetek Liquid CPU Cooler (120mm Radiator)

Thanks again for the advice,

harby

Yup, the 932 has better airflow than the 922.

And if I'm not mistaken the Micro runs the pcie slots at x16 x16 while the LE runs them at x16 x8. Basically this means you're cards have more bandwidth. I don't know why DST4ME picked the LE, but personally between the 2 I would go with the Micro.

And With regards to the Asus LC, it's really a cheapo kit and offers roughly the same performance as a decent air cooler, but the air cooler has the advantage of having only 2 moving parts (the fans) so if one of them fails you just replace them in 5 mins, while with the Asetek, if something fails and the whole unit would become worthless, or worse it might also leak.

1. the haf 922 has dust filters, unlikee it's older brother. the dimensions of both cases aren't huge, really similar in size. i have the haf 922 and it's a really great case !! but if you want to go big, the 932 will do.

2. the le motherboard is not full 2.0 x 16x pci-e support .. it's rather 16x, 2* 8x, and 4x pci-e slots. so if you were to sli, you would insert the cards into a 16x slot and the other into the 8x which is .5 speed. i also have the le motherboard. but i think the micro, although less expensive than the le, has full 2* 16x pci-e slots for reasons i don't know.

3. i have the v8 cooler. you should go with the noctua cooler .. it has many great reviews as does the v8, but noctua i think appeals more. if you plan to intermediate overclocking, a high-performance air cooler is good. however, extreme overclocking will require a full water-cooling system, and the asetek will not do in my opinion.

4. go with the 1000w corsair hx psu .. it will meet your demands in the future like if you plan to install a powerful gpu. gpu's will only get more power-hungry in the future. wise to take advantage of it now.

i hope these helped you. i'm not an expert, but intermediate >,<

reviews are good like tomshardware.com. i did a ton of research on pc components and companies prior to ordering. i ended up with a great DS pc and have gotten more knowledgable.

This is kind of a guess since I haven't read up on how PCIe works, but...

Seems like with the LE's additional slots, they had to divvy up the 16x between several slots so you end up with an 8, and two 4's (or something like that.)

The Micro only has the two slots so they could devote all the bandwidth to just the two and get two 16s.

I guess the question would be can/do the vid cards use more than 8x and do you ever want to add any additional (non-video) cards to the computer.

as long as you are getting 8x you are good, the LE will give you 16x and 8x.

@harby, My pleasure

the 932 has more room and the newer cards are bigger and need more room.

yes the LE for future upgrades and such, you can dual sli and have room for other pci cards, with micro you can't.

the asetek is not real liquid cooling and you will get better results with Noctua.
