What are opinions on the OS tweak option? I'm in Stage 3 of order...probably to late to change it (I didn't opt for the tweak).
I was worried they might disable something I need (how would they know?), but now I'm kinda wishing I'd selected it. |

It's nothing super special, we just disable a few unnecessary services and such. I can't list them, as we try to keep that a secret. I can tell you this much, one of the industry reviewered tested our OS tweaks statement, they did benchmarks with the system as is, and then they did a fresh install and did benchmarks, our system with the OS tweaks was slightly faster, nothing major, just a few FPS.

I would not use it, you got a link to that benchmark Alex I like to see it, cause if it did make a difference the system was not setup right, with 6GB of ram, proper gpu, and a quad core cpu, os tweak should make zero difference.

Sure, I knew you were going to come by and challenge me on that.
It was a review done by HotHardware, where they had an entire section of the review about this very thing:

I wasn't looking for an increase in FPS as much as a "cleaner," better OS.

Well that is not this platform and that is not a ht cpu and the review is 3 years old.
also that review said:
Also those are synthetic benchmarks, I didn't see any benches in that review that show difference in fps in games. so lets recap the problems with that bench, it has only 4GB of ram, the cpu is old and does not support ht, and there were no improvements shown in games, not to mention that is from 2009. now what does a 4 thread cpu, with 4GB of ram has to do with a 8 thread cpu, with 8GB of ram I have no clue. show me a bench that has 6 or 8GB of ram, on a cpu that supports ht, with a current setup that has seen any difference in real world use and games then we can talk. that review has only 2 benches on os tweak, one of which is synthetic and has nothing to do with real world use and the other showed the tweak actually slowing things down, as you can see below the clean install with out the tweak is doing nero faster then the oem tweaked os: do you know how many-times and different ways I have tweaked windows? it makes no difference in real life use. There is no such thing as a cleaner os, what your os does in the background with a 4 core 8 thread cpu and 8GB of ram will have absolutely nothing to do with your performance, its kinda like needing a job done that takes 4 people but you brought 12 people, so in short you got nothing to worry about, you got more then you need to being with. I will put my non tweaked os against any tweaked os any day. this whole disabling services was for the days when we had win xp with 1Gb of ram and due to shortage of ram, we needed to get rid anything that we may not have needed, so that we could use as much of that 1GB of ram we could, now you got 8GB, you got more then you need. but if down the line there is a service you need and you don't know what it is, then you will have world of problems. I'm not going to get in a debate over this.
@Trench, it's up to you honestly, OS tweaks do help with freeing up system resources for slightly better performance.

Alex if the system already has lot of free resources that are not even being used, how can more free resources make any difference?

I note (on that review):
"A distinct trend—all of the gains, when they occurred, occurred in benchmarks that involved searching, reading, or writing to the hard drive. Actual computation tests that were processor, GPU, or memory-bound did not show the same variations." My build is SSD only -- so probably not necessary. I did request (before reading this) that they add this option, and D.S. quickly responded. Hope that doesn't mean they need to test my system all over again. :) |

cpu and gpu and memory bound not showing change means, no gains in cpu calculations, no gain in fps from gpu work.
You are correct you have a ssd amongst other things which is why I said for todays pcs it will not make a difference. Edited by DST4ME - 29 Sep 2011 at 5:04pm |

I would argue that there is such a thing as a cleaner OS. I've used CCleaner and Glary Utilities (both free) for my current XP, and they do a ton of s**t. I also disabled unnecessary start-up items, etc.
I'm guessing D.S. does similar. ? Again, not looking for performance increase, per se. As for "I will put my non tweaked os against any tweaked os any day" -- You know the OS much better than me, I'm sure. Including how to tweak it. As for "Down the line there is a service you need and you don't know what it is, then you will have world of problems" -- Now I'm worried. |

You can see what all the services are here:
here and then disable whatever you like, you will see there will be no difference. Also you got a beast of a system, don't you want to get all the bells and whistles from your os? CCleaner is a great app and I use it too, but that is not the same as tweaking the os, ccleaner removes temps files and etc, while tweaking disables services. while we are on the subject, make sure you use the startup window of ccleaner to edit your startup apps, if you need help let me know. Ugh. What will I be missing? "Make sure you use the startup window of ccleaner to edit your startup apps." Off topic for a second, I do use the link from the Start window. It makes a difference? What is your recc on Glary? |

lol I'm sorry that went over my head, I didn't understand what you meant. to be honest with you between my av and firewall, anti spyware and ccleaner I have everything glary does covered, but my apps do it better, also with ssd you don't want to do some of the things glary does. |

Now I see what you mean. I was using Revo Uninstaller for this. Thx for word on Glary and SSD. To be clear -- and again sorry for off topic, I'll stop -- CCleaner good for SSD? |

It all depends on what the os tweak disables, that will decide what things will not be running and you could possibly be missing out on.
don't clean free space with ccleaner and you should be fine with ssd. its your thread ask what you like |

Your reply is to what post? Frustrating that the "reply" does not include the text related. As Steam forums do, most forums. |

If I may ask -- and no disrespect; I've been following your posts for some time before purchase -- who are you? Not likely a "traditional" employee, as you do recommend non-Digital Storm products (HAF-X). A compensated blogger, my guess. |

I'm a DS customer that has lot of experience and knowledge with hardware and software. I don't work for DS so I don't have to recommend only DS stuff.

av/firewall: ESET Smart Security, it has a 30 day full free trial, try it first then buy a license after 30 days I love it and highly recommend it.
anti spyware can be be paid version of spysweeper or Malwarebytes |

Kaspersky produced too many false positives during my testing, but to each his own.

Exactly too each his own. When DST makes a statement, remember its his opinion. That's why hes listed a customer, like everyone else but Alex.

What I said about Kaspersky was not an opinion, those were the results of the tests I did with avs, you will also find some others have had the same issue when doing similar tests.
I rarely offer my opinion here but when I do you will see "IMHO" before I give it to you. Whether I'm a customer or not it does not change the facts of how parts and apps perform. Also since we are customers we are not bias, So you get the real deal from the customer. Edited by DST4ME - 30 Sep 2011 at 12:26pm |
