Topic: Overclocking Core i7 in New Aventum 3 Posted: 24 Aug 2016 at 9:27am |
I'm considering buying a new Aventum 3 workstation with these components:
* ASUS X99 RAMPAGE V EDITION 10 * H20: HydroLux PRO: Exotic Custom Cooling System / Copper tubing * CPU Boost=Stage 1: Overclock CPU - Up to 4.4GHz I'm trying to decide between the Core i7 6850K (6-core 3.6GHz) and 6900K (8-core 3.2GHz). I do a lot of data analysis where individual CPU speed is important. 6 cores would suffice if I can get better speed with the 6850. But if the resulting 6900 overclock speed would be close to that of the 6850, then having the those 2 additional cores could be useful to me. If anyone happens to have a feel for how the 6850K and 6900K will overclock with the above configuration I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks! |

Well base clock for 6850k is 3.6GHz. Base clock for 6900K is 3.2Ghz.
Its not possible to tell you what oc you will endup with, there are many variations one of which is the cpu itself. lets assume you got a good cpu on both cases, one would assume around 3.8GHz to 4.2GHz oc on the 6900K, and 4.0GHz to 4.4GHz on the 6850K. those are just estimates you could very well endup with lower or little higher. For example I have seen the 6900K at 4.4Ghz with a vcore of 1.35. Edited by DST4ME - 24 Aug 2016 at 9:59am |

Thanks, very helpful, sounds like the 6900K will likely OC to a speed that works well for me. |

As long as you are ok with ending up with the lower end then you are good to go, remember just because one 6900k did 4.4Ghz does not mean the next one won't get maxed at 3.8GHz.

Got it. 3.8, although not guaranteed, would actually be very good. And as I use VMs, those 2 additional cores would be useful. So it's worth a shot. Thanks!
