My motherboard: ASUS Z87-Expert.

I"m considering setting up 2 x 4Gb drives in RAID 1 (mirror), so that I have a backup if one drive dies.

I haven't paid any attention, but in the past I'm sure I've seem some kind of dedicated RAID cards or something.

My motherboard says it supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10.

Does that mean I just need 2 drives hooked up to the motherboard to use RAID?
Or do I need other hardware?

There are hardware RAID controllers, but you do not need them. You are good to go with what you have.

Yup, as Tidgxor said - you are good to go with your motherboards onboard support for RAID. The add-on cards are usually made for systems without on-board support or for additional features not provided by the onboard controller...

Great. Thanks guys. My original thought was to get a 4TB USB3 external drive to back up my data drive, but I think I might stick another internal drive in and RAID it.

As far as I could see a video on a different ASUS motherboard it's a fairly simple thing to set up via the BIOS.

I'm not familiar with your particular motherboard, but I have an older Asus mobo and the RAID setup was a breeze.

My only worry with relying on RAID/2 drives in the same machine is what if some disaster struck like the machine catching on fire or a power surge frying everything on both drives.
At least with an external drive it would reduce the risk of having everything in the same box. Downside it more maintenance/use of backup software, etc.
