Topic: Suggestions with build Posted: 21 Feb 2010 at 9:11pm |
I'm fairly green when it comes to the computer building world and I've read nothing but good things about digital storm. I've been reading some forums and trying to decide what id like in a new computer for gaming. I'm currently rocking a really old dell 4700 series which is just not keeping up anymore even with additional ram (3gb) and a new video card (nvidia 9800gt). I've got a monitor capable of a max resolution of 1280x1024 but would like to upgrade to a bigger one in the near future. My budget is about $2700, but if it would be worth waiting a lil while longer for a better system I'm fine with that. I'm going to reuse my monitor for now until i can save up to buy a bigger one. I've come up with this configuration, 386985. Any input would be greatly appreciated. In this build I'm also looking for upgradability for future proofing.

great build dst! i can't find anything that beats the dell u2410! i've spent days looking but with out any finds.
the monitor is about 600 bucks but it is a very wide spead monitor. meaning it is great for gaming and has the wide color gamit for photo editing. so what ever your pleasures are this monitor can perform. this monitor comes with a dvi cable according to a dell sales rep and a 6 ft hdmi cable is $5. (i spent 2 hrs talking to donna r) i agree with dst use the $300 dollars saved on this monitor and get another $300 more and your set to rock |

That looks good to me. But maybe I'm missing something. When i open that ticket, i don't have the option for the dell u2410 in the display's drop down. If i call and place the order, is this something i can have them add over the phone?

Oh, and would it be worth saving up and adding the I7 960 over the 920? How much of a difference between the two would i notice? And just for reference, I'm very impatient in waiting for things to load.

Only one way to find out. You can always just buy that monitor online (newegg.com). I wouldn't buy any monitor in that drop down menu. |

the dell u2410 is sold from dell, all the monitors in the config page are tn panels, the dell is an ips panel.
ips panels have better picture quality then tn panels, its no contest. the difference between 960 and 920 can be seen in your bank account, other then that, there is not much to be seen. |

no stage 1 oc is stage 1 oc.
they won't push both of them past 3.9GHz, so what is the difference between 960 @ 3.7GHz and 920 @ 3.7GHz? nothing but the price. that is the whole point of ocing, you spend less but you get the same performance or better then the next cpu that cost more. you oc a 920 here, you get between 3.5GHz and 3.9GHz, thats faster then a 975 chip with stock speed of 3.3GHz and $1000 less then the 975. |

Wow, i just assumed they would only push the 920 to 3.3GHz not all the way to 3.7GHz. One last question and i think I'm done asking, would it be beneficial at all to upgrade to the 1x ATI Radeon HD 5970 with the new monitor? I would like to push the graphics to the max that i can.

rule number 1 for gpu is:
single card solution is always best. aka no cf or sli. the 5970 is in internal cf, the 295 gtx is in internal sli. for res of 1900 x 1200 all you need to play most games maxed out and with 8x aa and 16x af is 1 x 5870. you will not see any gain from the 5970, you could run into some cf bugs tho, never go cf or sli unless you have to, and you don't have to, 5970 or 2 x 5870 is for 2560 x 1600 res. we have 920s here oced to 3.8 or 3.9, they range anywhere from 3.5 to 3.8 on the average, the 920 oces the best. Well guys... I got my computer today. So far so good. It fired right up. It looks GREAT with the U2410 monitor hooked up to it.This system is even quieter than my old one. I haven't done anything yet except fire it up and hop on the forum to let you guys know i got it. I was super pleased with the way the computer was packaged. I even dig the fact that I got the personalized user manual. The only little hiccup I've noticed is that the internal lighting isn't working. The blue light inside the chassis under the side fan isn't lighting up. I would assume its a quick fix. Any suggestions on where to begin or am i overlooking something really silly?

There should be a little red switch for it on the back of the computer, in one of the expansion slots, likely the bottom slot.

I followed the wires. all of them are plugged into what looks like a converter box, The switch has been flipped in both positions while the computer is running.

This is the reason i am falling in love with the. It makes EVERY penny well worth it to know they care about the customer not the all mighty dollar. I'm glad i took the time to read about the customer service and all the good things every has said.

the fact that they bent over backwards for their customers is what sold me, I figured worst case scenario, they will at least refund your money, but after being here for like 2 years, I didn't see anything that made me thing I would ever need to return my pc, plus I know what I'm doing so it would take a lot for me to return my pc.
