Topic: Upgrade or New Build? Posted: 29 Jun 2016 at 8:49pm |
Budget:
2,500 - 3,000 Expectations/Use: I have had my current rig since March 2012 and have loved it. Digital Storms build quality and customer support are A+. My system is still going strong after 4 years! I am ready to move up to a Nice QHD ultra wide monitor like the Acer predator or Asus ROG specifically for flight simming in X-plane 10, FSX etc. I also play shooters like Battlefield etc... I am very interested in the HTC Vive/ Oculus rift for its flight sim application as well as other games that would be awesome in VR and would love to be able to crank my graphics settings up to High/Ultra levels. My question is do I go with a new build or can I upgrade RAM/GPU etc on my current system to fit my needs? Here is my current build: Chassis Model: Cooler Master Storm Enforcer Processor: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 (Intel Z68 Chipset) (Features Intel Quick Sync Technology) System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Power Supply: 800W Corsair GS (Dual SLI Compatible) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (120GB Solid State (By: Corsair) (Model: Force GT Series CSSD-F120GBGT-BK) (SATA 6Gbps) Hard Drive Set 2: 1x (120GB Solid State (By: Corsair) (Model: Force GT Series CSSD-F120GBGT-BK) (SATA 6Gbps Hard Drive Set 3: 1 TB HD Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Video Card(s): 2x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H80 Liquid CPU Cooler New Build: Bolt 3 (smaller foot print, sexy, quieter?) Looking to stick with a single GPU system going forward (did not see huge improvements when I bought my second 570.) This is what i was thinking on a new build: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Pre-built Digital Storm Bolt 3 Processor: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz (Codename Skylake) (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Z170I PRO GAMING (Intel Z170 Chipset) (Mini-ITX) (Up to 1x PCI-E Device) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series Power Supply: 600W SilverStone SX600-G (Gold Plus Rated) (Supports up to GTX TITAN X) Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 8x / CD-Writer 8x) (Internal) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (500GB Samsung 850 EVO) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (1TB Seagate / Toshiba) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce GTX 1080 8GB (NVIDIA Founders Edition) (VR Ready) Would love any input/feedback on my decision, thanks for taking the time to read and answer! Cheers! |

For VR you gonna need better cpu otherwise I would tell you to upgrade gpus.
so the second build is more like it but it needs changes. what res are you gaming at with the current pc? |

My 2500k CPU with a gtx 970 shows Ready for VR with Steams VR READY test. Some 2500k systems with a 970 show only Capable, meaning not all games or features might work. My 2500k is oc'd to 4.2 which might be the difference.
Not sure how reliable the Steam Test is. |

I think between AI and VR the next few years are gonna be crazy as far how we do things go.

If AI and especially VR take off like some would like, in several years we'll be looking back at today's gaming as we do Pong now. Can't picture myself being totally immersed in a VR world, with all surroundings blocked out, but time will tell.

Tighten up your belt cause AI is coming for sure and its gonna change everything.
VR seems like it has great possibilities if they do it right, but it still has a good way to go IMHO tho right now it is pretty cool for what it is. Don't even get me started on drones.... Wait we are hijacking this thread, we need to have this discussion elsewhere. My apologies to OP. Edited by DST4ME - 30 Jun 2016 at 4:03am |

Thanks for all the replies, no worries on the topic getting hijacked, its easy for that to happen when you throw VR out there.
From what I'm reading it looks like I may be able to get away with upgrading for now and and holding off on VR another year or more. Let me clarify my current and goal needs to make sure I should be good. Current gaming: 1920x1080, newer games are low to med and older ones are still high with settings. Goal: 3440 x 1440, be able to crank settings up to high for newer titles coming out like BF1, Battlefront etc... Will my current build say I add in a GTX 1080 and CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 get me to my goal?? If not and I need a new build I want to make sure a new build will be capable of current and some future VR, what changes would you make to my BOLT 3 config to ensure that?? Thanks again! |

Your 2500k at higher res is less of an issue so I would just go sli 1080 to take care of that, btw do you mean 3840 x 2160 or 3440 x 1440?
your new build I would go with a good 850w, sli 1080, and cpu oced. I will tell you that the bolt is not my favorite case here specially for sli. |

3440x1440, I am looking into the Asus ROG 34 in curved or Acer Predator 34 inch curved monitors. They both look great fro flight simming plus any other games coming out.
So for purposes of staying withing the $2500-$3000 budget on a new build, you would go with a OCed cpu, a case that I could drop another 1080 into over time (doubt I can stay in 3k budget with SLI 1080s ) and a solid 850W PSU. New Build: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Digital Storm Velox Processor: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz (Codename Skylake) (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING (Intel Z170 Chipset) (Up to 5x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series Power Supply: 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (500GB Samsung 850 EVO) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (1TB Seagate / Toshiba) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce GTX 1080 8GB (NVIDIA Founders Edition) (VR Ready) Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex 240mm Radiator Liquid CPU Cooler CPU Boost: Stage 1: Overclock CPU - Up to 4.4GHz (Depends on Cooling and Motherboard) This seem like a better future-proof/VR option with the ability to add in another 1080 over time? |

Yes you are thinking the right way, however remove the storage 2, and instead later this year or some point in 2017 add a 1TB ssd for better price and performance.
I'm just not sure if vr uses full x16 pci lanes for each gpu or if x8 if fine cause that cpu is stuck with x16 lanes aka 1 gpu at x16 or 2 gpus at x8. I really would like to know if VR needs the full x16 lane or not, if it does and you get that build it will be pointless. Edited by DST4ME - 30 Jun 2016 at 7:51am |
