Topic: upgrading my old rig, Posted: 26 Jun 2016 at 10:19pm |
Hey DS team,
I've been on and off about a new rig and been researching and what not, some of my friends are telling me to build a rig on my own and some are telling me to just upgrade the components i got.. Currently i got: Case: Cooler Master 942 HAF X Processor: Intel Core i7 2600k Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe Memory: Corsair Vengance 16gb ddr3 1600mhz (2x8) GPU: 2xGTX 960 FTW+SSC edition. Power Supply: 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050 HX Harddrive 1: Intel 320 Series 120gb SSD Harddrive 2: 1TB western Digital Caviar cooling: Corsair A70 So, for components i'm currently looking at is Intel Core i7‑6700K EVGA Z170 Classified EVGA GTX 1080 FTW So i've never built my own rig or even installed processor or motherboards.. i'm curious if those parts a compatible with my current case and if the other components are also. When it comes to Cables and Wires for the installation most would come in a kit or is that something i would also have to look into getting?? I'm sure most in my Rig are enough. |

You either have the cables or the mobo with come with the ones you need.
I would only upgrade the gpus if this is for gaming. If you want you can upgrade the ssd too. why 4 way sli mobo? 3/4 way sli is no longer supported. |

Yes this is for gaming, I think it was the z170 Pro gaming that I was looking at.
Main concern is if the mobo fits my case in not experienced in motherboards. |

What res you gonna be gaming at?
the classified is an e-atx form and the z170 Pro gaming is an atx form factor and the haf x can fit upto xl-atx form factor so both of those will fit. |

If its a gaming rig I would just update the gpu at the res, and then upgrade next round of intel cpus.

i agree, if this is just for gaming i would only upgrade the gpu (unless there's something wrong with your cpu or you're just looking for something newer). you can upgrade the mobo to a pcie 3.0 capable one (Z77 chipset is 3.0 and compatible with your 2600K), but it's not necessary as pcie 2.0 running a single (or even dual) GTX 1080 won't saturate the bandwidth. now, if you were wanting to run high speed pcie storage with 2 vid cards+ then i'd be worried in your shoes, but you aren't so...

Only cooling I currently got are fans from the tower and the a70 from my processor so nothing special. I'm not experienced at all in liquid and wouldn't even know what it'll take or how to set that up even with the 1080

the Corsair A70 isn't quite as good as the Noctua D14, but it's in the neighborhood and you should be able to overclock your 2600K at least to 4GHz, if not a little higher, which should be fast enough.
also, since your gaming on a 2k monitor, the higher resolution all but takes the cpu out of the equation as the game performance at that resolution falls more on the gpu. |

As db188 said your system is fine.
replacing the 980 with 1080 is very easy, you want to use these 2 pci lanes on your mobo: and then follow my guide: If you like to know how easy it is to add a gpu yourself look here |

Your psu is a great psu thus why you can handle 1080, you can do sli 1080 because of both the mobo and psu. whoever recommended those parts was smart.
For gaming no other upgrade will really matter as db188 said at your res most of the power comes from gpu. |

it seems you've already spotted the two biggest improvements for your gaming pleasure: the monitor and the graphics. you'll get a few more fps by upgrading your mobo to a Z77, because it's pcie 3.0, but that 5 fps might not be worth about $150 for a new mobo. your ssd storage is quite low if you intend to put more than a couple of games on it. your ssd will help in level loading speed in most games, but not by a hugely noticeable margin. i've got one of the fastest pcie ssd's on the planet and i load in faster than my brother on a mechanical drive about 20 secs faster on average.

Personally I would upgrade ssd, gpus and monitor. with dual gpu you want to go sata ssd not pci aka m.2, the 850 pro would be a good one IMHO. Now the ssd does not make a big difference in gaming as mentioned however a faster ssd helps everything move a little faster, boot, read/write etc.

I have the 2500k cooled by the Corsair A70. It's clocked to 4.2 and stays in the 60's C . Like was suggested, a gpu upgrade is really all you need right now. |
