Hi guys,

Been about 5 years since I got my last Digital Storm rig, and it's starting to show its age.  It's also rusting quite a bit since I live near the ocean and I'm worried it's going to blow at any second again.  Just lost another PSU so now I'm on the hunt for a new rig.

I want to set up a computer for video editing but there seem to be so many options and I'm totally out of date with the recent tech that has come out.

I'd like to be able to edit 1080p 24, 60, and 120 fps smoothly.  I don't necessarily need 4k but I'd like to futureproof this thing for a few years.

I'll be using the Adobe Creative Cloud.

What basic setup should I start with?  I'm looking at the stock Bolt 3 right now

- Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 CPU
- 32GB DDR4 ECC 2133MHz
- NVIDIA Quadro K2200 4GB
- 250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD
- 2TB 7200RPM Storage HDD

Any help or suggestions on where to start would be much appreciated!

ideally you want a cpu with a lot of cores and lots of system ram.  a Slade 6-core Xeon-based system config'd with 32GB ram, a boot/app 250GB Samsung Evo ssd, a data storage WD Black 1TB hdd, and K2200 4GB graphics will cost you around $2600.  you can go with a Slade 6-core X99-based similarly config'd ( with a GTX 960 4GB) will cost around $2200.  the Xeon is tuned a little more optimally for rendering/modeling but the I7-5820K does very well also.  your choice.

the stock Bolt 3 is actually an I7-6700K based system.  the one you listed is a level 2 and ~$2800.

Good info!  Thanks!  Yeah the cores thing is a good tip.  It's things like that which I'm pretty out of touch on right now and I'm trying to catch up.

np.  also, don't get hung up on ram speed either. capacity is prime for your needs.

The M5000 is an awesome card. It's equivalent to a GTX 980, but with double the VRAM, Quadro drivers, etc. The 5000-series Quadro cards are nice because they feature the soft ECC that is in the 6000-series at a much lower price point. The M4000 doesn't have the soft ECC, but is equivalent to a GTX 970 with 8GB VRAM and a good deal cheaper than the M5000. Both should handle 1080p well and should be able to move up to 4K with the 8GB VRAM when the time comes.

As far as the processor goes, get what your budget can afford. The more cores and higher the frequency, the faster the time to render. RAM looks good as selected. You should have an idea of how much storage you need.

that will put him way over his budget though.   i guess it depends on whether you do most of your rendering with gpu or cpu where you're going to put most of your money.  what about an I7 6-core+a 980ti?  more cuda cores a little less ram wider interface bus.  that's cheaper than a Xeon 6-core+m5000.
