Looking to buy a system in the next week or two and currently looking at Slade Level 2. I will be using a 23 inch monitor at 1920x1080.

Budget = up to around $3,500 (though happy to spend less).

Expectations = I expect my system to run games at the above resolution - mostly at hightest settings if possible. I play mostly MMO's and just a few others games here and there.

Usage = My system is mainly used for web surfing and moderate gaming. No video rendering or photo editing.

Special Needs = I'm concerned with keeping it as quiet as possible since I live in a small apartment.

I know very little about motherboards and cooling options.  I'm a little confused if I should go with Two GTX 680's or just start with one and add later if needed. At my resolution I'm not convinced I would need that much going on.

Here is my current configuration for your review and suggestions. Thank you so much for your suggestions.

I should add that I changed it after submitting this to show the GTX 680 4GB version since I'm also looking to have DS overclock the card for me.

Great build but a couple of things.  Drop the noise suppression package and save $79.  That 550D case is very quiet as is . Just a waste.

The Noctua D14 cooler doesn't fit into the 550D case.  For that cooler look at the HafX case under Special Ops, Dreadnought.  It is the best air cooled case.\ and that cooler is very dependable and we always suggest the two.

If you stay with the 550D go with the Vortex 240mm rad cooler.

Not sure you need to spend another $70 on the Dominator memory.  The default 16GB is great.

The rest looks great and best of luck.Big%20Smile

I guess one question I have if anyone can offer advice is if I should get SLI? I plan to get the GTX 680 card but wondered if I should go with that in SLI? I'm playing on a 23 inch monitor at 1920 x 1080 and don't plan to go any bigger than maybe 24 inch monitor.

Advice?

Hi JohnD212,

Here is link to a comparison of the GTX 680 vs GTX 680 in sli:

The comparisons don't show the 1920 x 1080 resolution but does show 1920 x 1200.  At your resolution you would get slightly better performance.

You can change the Graphcis cards in the link to get different comparisons.  You might want to for example compare the GTX 670 vs GTX 680 and GTX 670 SLI to GTX 680 SLI.  You might just be suprized at what you see.

As Asangard so subtly hinted Big%20Smile you can get a gtx 670 for $250 cheaper than the 680 for almost the same performance.  Just a thought.  And your moderate gaming and monitor size, you probaly don't need sli unless you went to games like BF3, Metro, etc and had to have them on Ultra settings.

Hi JohnD212,

If it was me I would get two 670s in SLI instead of one 680.

Hi John,
Great choice on the builders, DS is

as for Ram, I'd go with Corsairs , just less of a headache
not sure if DS still uses mushkins, which is fine also.

I'd op for better PSU (For future proof)
at that resolution, a Single GTX670 is good, in the future if more demanding games come out, just add another at a lower cost

Take out the Sound damp , stick with onboard network and sound.
I have the soundcard and honestly it isnt all that great.
I'd spend alittle more and go Intel for SSD if you really must spend that much, if not just save alittle.

Id also aim for a slightly larger Case, Cramped cases are never fun in the future when you upgrade

Just my 2 cents

If I were going to go with a different case which would you recommend for good cooling but also helping to keep the noise level low. I'm in a very small apartment and can't have a system that makes much noise.

The HafX believe it or not is pretty quiet.  It doesn't look it with the larger fans but the larger fans move at only 700 rpm which makes for relative quiet.

The 600T and 650D are also good.   Again, the larger 200mm fans aren't bad.  When we say quiet, they won't be as quiet as the Slade"s 550D, but some whooshing noise from case fans is expected from gaming rigs.  In alot of cases, its the graphics card and cpu cooler's fans that make the most noise under load.

Ok so I made some changes and wondered if this looks fairly good for something that will run games on a single monitor @ 1920x1080?

Do I really need 1050w PSU or is 800w more than enough? I don't want to run into problems if I decide to upgrade a GPU later on. Also I'm not 100% sure I should go with the Creative sound card or integrated sound (I"ve never done integrated sound).

Great build.Awesome

The 800W will handle a sli setup, DS does it all the time, but the 1050HX gives you alot more headroom for add-ons, psu degrade over time, etc.  But, DS does warranty the 800W for 5 years.

I haven't done a sound card in 10 years so I couldn'r help with that.  Some swear by them and others think its a waste.  You could go without and if integrated doesn't do iy, buy one and slip it in.  Pretty easy to do.

Good luck.Big%20Smile

I just switched from intergrated sound to the Sound Blaster 3D Recon Champion.  For me there was a big improvement in the sound.  If was much crisper and I could tell easily where things were just based on the sound alone.  Also reviews I have read say the 3D recon drivers are much better than previous Sound Blaster drivers.
Intergrated sound has gotten much better over the years but this card just seems so much better.

As bprat22 said some folks like em some don't.  Count me in the like catagory.

Ok..thanks guys. I guess I'll stick with the 1050w PSU since it doesn't hurt to have more than enough...the Sound card I'll decide prior to ordering this weekend. Does anyone know - if I order over the phone, are the phone people pretty knowledgeable about the systems and able to answer questions about builds?

Most have had a very good and knowledgable experience.    Of course, there have been exceptions.      If something sounds strange, get back to us.    I think you' ll be in good hands.     DS stands by thelr builds.

I noticed that they now offer the 670 2 GB (FTW Overclocked EVGA) edition. Would that be advisable over the regular 670 2 GB asking on behalf of JohnD212 and for myself as well or is it not worth it due to DS expertise at making all cards function well.

Just from my reading up on it..the 680 is Nvidia's flagship so to speak and deals with heat and noise much better than the 670. I know it costs more but my main goal outside of performance is noise so I think for me the 680 is an easy choice. Plus I know I'll upgrade in a  year or so anyway..

Hi BiohazardX-87..... The 670 FTW is clocked about the same as the 680 and the performance is also about the same as the 680.  So, the 670FTW would give you a few fps better gaming over the 670 for about $60 I believe.  Plus, with factory oc, it keeps its warranty.  It's really up to the buyer if the extra $$ is worth a few fps.  It might be.  Still cheaper than a 680 for about the same performance.

JohnD212....The 680 does run cooler and quieter than the 670, by about 1-2C temp and 1-2 dDa noise.  So, cooler and quieter by a small degree, but you are right.

They do say that under load the 670 cooler will emit a low hum, that you might or might not hear .  Thats' from a few weeks back.  Not sure if its been addressed.

I asked this before but I'm still not sure about the PSU. Do I need 1050 or is 800 enough? Someone told me that 1050 might have a fan that runs louder because it will run hotter? If I'm having the CPU and graphics card overclocked does the 800w leave me much room for say an additional card later on?

Hi JohnD212......If you want to play it safe, go 1050Hx.   The 800W will work because DS in its testing will check thermals and loads.  Their ODE 4 has sli 670  and oc'd cpu and ship it with the 800W.

If you go through the configs myself, FrankW and others recommend, we always recommend the 1050HX unless someone is real tight on budget and the extra $134 just isn't do-able.

With the new Kepler cards, 670/680, and their lower loads, the 1050HX is probably more than you need and the 800w just makes it.  A 950HX would be ideal, but they don't have.  Another thought is the 750HX for another $50.  It has 7 year warranty and its higher, 90%, efficiency rating gives it, potentially, more juice than 800w at 80%.  640 watts vs 675watts under load, ideally.  Those are rated figures and both can actually deliver more.

The Hx series is also modular, meaning if you ever have to replace the psu, you don't have to pull out and re-re-route the wiring.

Hope this helps, but probably just muddied things more for you.Big%20Smile

Not at all..you helped a lot. I think you're right, I'll go 1050w...I did a little calculation from a website and while it looks like my system would have enough power you never know what parts in the future might need and it would be easier to already have the 1050 in the system..so 1050w it is.

Thanks

Hi JohnD212,

I know you are close to a final build but here are some thoughts for consideration.

1. Good move on the 1050HX. Being modular with a 7 year warranty from the factory is a strong plus. The GS800 only has a 3 year warranty from the factory. DS will warrant it for 5 years. If you have to change the power supply in the future you will want a modular PS.

2. I know you have selected the 680 GPU and that is a good choice so my comments are just for information. The key to the 670 is to buy the FTW model. No one should be buying the 670 SC model. The 670 FTW model does not have the hum reported by users. At your resolution there is no reason to buy the 680 unless you just want the best of the best.

3. If you don't have a speaker system to take advantage of a sound card then you just don't need one. The on board sound is all you need for gaming.

4. Your final system looks good and you will have years of pleasure from it. I think you have made a mistake with your case choice. You are sacrificing looks for performance. You say you want it to be quite but then you add two 120mm fans to the top. I am assuming that DS will mount the Vortex Rads to the top. You can't get around that 120mm fans are noisy unless you turn down the fan speed. If you turn down the fan speed you sacrifice cooling. With the 550 you now have 5 120mm fans. Two at the front, one at the rear and two at the top. Even though the case has sound proofing it will do little to quite those 120mm fans. In my opinion you have made a mistake with your case choice but I understand getting with what you want.

Thanks Frank. I appreciate your ideas. Regarding the case, I went with that case because it seems to indicate (as does the Slade) that it was designed for the system to be more quiet.

The description of the case says:

Obsidian Series 550D is carefully engineered for noise reduction and sound isolation. But, it’s not just about keeping things quiet — there’s amazing cooling potential, lots of expansion flexibility, and the durability that Obsidian Series is renowned for.

I am definitely not locked into getting this case. Is there a case you would suggest that would be better for what I'm looking for? Confused

For a case I only have the choice between  Corsair Obsidian 550D  & SilverStone Fortress FT02 (Black OPS Assassin Edition). I see both have received very good reviews so I'm torn. All the reviews for the Obsidian 550D say it is very quiet but a runs a few degrees warmer but the SilverStone says its your typical case but doesn't run particuarly noisey.

I was about to order my system and now am confused about cases. Will I be ok with the Corsair Case?

The 550 will do the job for you or DS won't ship it.

You have a great system with your last build and you should go for it. I should not have introduced my personal preferences at this late stage.

Get the case you really love looking at,
about the cooling between the 2 cases you chose, don't worry about it, it won't make a night and day difference.
sound also.
easily fixed with changed out Fans, Eventually you will have to anyways.

also as for Factory OC'd Cards, I wouldn't go for.
I'd save Money on it and OC my self, which most likely you will anyways. You may get better results also

4GB on your resolution will be pointless,
2GB is more than enough, Unless you're considering 2560x1600 / Multi Monitor setups w/ higher resolution.

Stick with 2GB models and save your money,

With the GPU you should look more at their Cooling,
Gives you an idea of how much you can OC or DC (Yes so people DC their GPU)

Soundcard totally up to you.
Like others mentioned, Some love it some hate it.

I personally don't like it, I switched up to a Bose USB speaker setting, and my headsets are also USB and run off their own decoding so my SB Recon never gets used actually.

Now I have Asus Xonar (Headphone set) and SB (Platinum, Recon 3D, Titanium) sitting around,
I keep them incase I ever decide to finish my HTPC's w/ surround sound setup
and one of them (the sb platinum) is submerged so I can't even sell that lol

P.S Good move on the PSU
just because it says 1050w it doesnt mean you'd be using up all the 1050w when youre system only requires 700w
So it's a good thing you went that path for future sake.

I switch out my pc parts once a year, only thing i havnt changed was my PSU's because they were a good investment.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll just go with the sound card. I figure it can't hurt and if I decide I don't want it I can just take it out. The case I've decided on the Corsair Obsidian 550d. I realize it won't cool quite as good but I also probably am not as demanding in games as a lot of people. I will definitely look to replace the fans with ones that are more quiet. Already done some research and see that the SilentWing series of 140mm fans come highly rated so I might swap those in during the first few months if necessary. I also don't mind adding a fan or two to the side panel which this case will allow. I like the ability to take the fans I add out if the sound is too much for me.

The video card I will definitely stick to the 2gb version. I know I'll most likely upgrade the grade within a year or so and doubt anything above 2gb is necessary. Definitely going with the 1050w PSU....

Now I just have to decide about the OC version of the video card or just rely on the regular version and let DS overclock it. I thought maybe the OC version of the card might have better parts to help deal with any heat. Do you think that's true or is it just the same card but factory OC'd?

My understanding is that the 670FTW is oc'd to 680 specs, but also has the 680's longer pcb for better load results and the 680 cooler which is quieter and cools up to 30% better than stock 670.  Plus the rear heat vents are larger to get the heat out quicker.

I agree with Kyu that we generally don't recommend the oc'ing but this one does have added benefits.

For a non-oc'd card, the difference between the 670 and 680 in cooling is negligibel but under oc'ing the added cooling does help.

I've decided on the 680 but you're saying it isn't worth the extra few bucks for the 680 oc over the regular 680? Should I still have DS do their video card oc'ing which they say is currently free?

Sorry about that.  I was helping elsewhere with the 670 and got all caught up.Oops

The 680 oc does help with a few fps better in gaming.  Some games it helps and some it seems to do nothing.  Not sure the $70 is worth it, but sometimes the extra few frames make a difference.  I wouldn't if it was my money but that's me.

The free oc'ing does add stress for little results but DS does test them for stability so again, I personally would not but they do warranty their work.

Ok. Great. I think I'll go with the OC version of the card but discuss with them if I need any further OC. I suspect since I play on a single monitor at 1920x1080 that I won't really be needing the overclocking of the overclocked version of a card...lol. I read somewhere you really don't even need 16GB of RAM but it is just hard to go with only 8GB...common sense tells me I only need 8 but the gamer in me says Have 16GB. lol
