Topic: 1st 10 programs on your computer Posted: 07 Sep 2010 at 7:33pm |
I am in stage 7 and going to be getting my computer soon. I was hoping for some advice on security and maintenance programs, there are a few threads on that already, but I thought I would try it a different way...
Simply put: what are the 1st 10 programs you put on your computer when you got it
(assuming those are also the 10 most important in your mind when you got your computer lets see what it this list says about you!)
I suppose everyone starts with Windows...
Thanks for your comments!
Not to ask anyone to do something I haven't, for my last comp several years old it was probably:
Vista
Norton Internet Security
Albelton LIVE (reason I got my last quad processor)
MS Office
Star Wars Galaxies ( don't really play anymore)
Civ III (later IV will soon be getting V)
Company of Heros (and sequals)
StarCraft Brood War (now SC II of course)
Dawn of War (and sequals)
Pinnicle 12 then 14 (got later after I got an HD video camera)

in my personal experience, its never been beneficial to run an active (aka running all the time) virus scannner
what it comes down to for me is that paying attention to what you open/download/click whatever is far more effective than having something constantly running in the background in addition to windows built in defense
ive posted this on the forums a few times too and its never really gotten a response so i kind of assume that it doesnt apply to a lot of other people lol... but since a while ago when i decided against trying to obtain anything that wasnt mine through use of the internet i have not had any problems at all
i also skim through my system files and processes on a semi regular basis, looking for anything that isnt supposed to be there, i run ccleaner a lot, hijackthis sometimes, and spybot once every now and then ... spybot used to be really lightweight but it seems that now its full of all kinds of crap so i typically install it, do a few scans, then uninstall it. i hate bloatware with a buring passion
additionally, if anyone who is even semi good at causing trouble wants to target you personally, they will rip any of these little freescanners and probably most paid firewalls to shreds and burn them, so no help there either
*edit* and most importantly, i keep hard copy backups of everything important to me because i reformat semi-regularly anyway, which further removes a need for most virus/firewall/protection related things Edited by !ender_ - 08 Sep 2010 at 8:14am |

IMO this virus thing is an overblown myth from the dot.com bubble days. I've been running unprotected for years. And the last time I had to reinstall an OS due to virus was when I'm my younger years I bravely and niavley downloaded a crack from a Russian warez site.
I've tried some AV programs last year, but I found then to be more of a pain than anything. Always popping up warnings and locking up the system when I wanted to run game trainers, or when something like ccleaner or wmp is trying to connect to the web. Hogging up my 1.2 megabit connection with it's constant updates. Self corrupting it's virus db every other month therefore hogging even more bandwidth to re download the whole effing thing. However I'm only an enthusiast and I don't the long term reprucussions of running without AV. For all I know several rootkits could be embeded in my OS right now sending my every keystroke to a script kiddy's virtual server. |

Its true, I don't run a virus scanner either. If your not trying to get something that you shouldn't, then you won't pick up a virus in the process usually.
If it provides you peace of mind, then totally go for it. However I can't even tell you the last time I installed a virus scanner on my system. |

If your're leaving out the anti-virus program, what are your top 10 programs you install first Sarah? Just out of curiosity.

So since you leave out AV where do you go on the internet? DS site
Google - but don't search anything?
News sites?
Nowhere?
I'm being sarcastic but seriously I don't look at porn, I don't go to weird sites, I scan all incoming e-mail etc, virtually everyone recommends AV software so just how do you prevent issues, what do you do / not do on the internet, please give specific examples.

I used to run windows without an anti virus, I was always quite careful but one day I exit a game and I see a windows message waiting there to be read. This message informed me that I had gloriously obtained over 400 viruses somhow Since then I've always had AVG free running when I use the intertnet

its not where we do go, its where we dont. i avoid anything that says free or click here, and i go where i please. most of my places are pretty nerdy to be honest though, i read hardware and video game reviews, watch some shows on youtube, and the rest is forums. its just general smartness that you aquire over a long history of getting link-owned like avoiding links that are in another language... ctrl+alt+deleting out of windows that pop up and dont let you close them without clicking on something.. i have found though that if a site is giving me trouble, that chrome seems more secure than ie, just in my exp

One positive side of running no antivirus is, you are cautious. you know you have no AV, so you are careful. Most people that run an Anti virus program feel some sort of false confidence. Every PC that I have repaired due to Virus(s) shutting them down have all had AV of one type or another installed. The customers thought that since they have an AV they should be safe. Allways be cautious no matter what. |

I have Itunes and winamp, my wife likes itunes for her player, me, I can't stand it, it's convenient for downloading pretty much anything and of course you have to have it if you have an ipod, but winamp is cooler for playing pretty much anything IMO.

quicktime, wmv, avi, H.264, bah, why can't there just be one internationally accredited standard for video playback. i mean, they got an international standard with USB, eSATA, and Firewire, why not video playback, yeesh. MP3's already there.
