I have pretty much settled on the components I want for a new build, leaning towards the Apollo right now, but I'm just a little unsure of one aspect. I want the GTX 980ti, and my question is; will the i5 4690k be enough for that card, or should I go with the i7 4790k? I know an insufficient processor can bottleneck a graphics card, and obviously I don't want that to happen. Of course I would like to save some cash where I can, so any insight into this issue would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Reaper18... Welcome to the forums.
The 4690k is just fine with the 980Ti. The only real difference between the 4690k and the 4790k is the i7 has hyper threading and the I5 doesn't. The 4790k does have a faster base and turbo clock, but with overclocking it doesn't mean much and without separate oc'ing the difference is only a few % points with certain games, apps. For gaming, the 4690k is best bang for the buck. It's usually a few generation older cpu's and new cards that tend to bottleneck and even then it's not usually that much in real world gaming. Hope this helps. Edited by bprat22 - 02 Jul 2015 at 6:50am |
