Topic: Banshee questions - Cooling system power & noise? Posted: 07 Feb 2016 at 7:09pm |
Hi,
I'm very open to any and all feedback. Thanks! db Budget: [Looking not to exceed $3.5k for 5 years of "life"] Expectations: [Playing the latest and greatest games today, going forward will be ok throttling down some] Usage: [Pretty heavy gaming - currently still on a ASUS N61JQ with a 720QM i7 & 8gb ram, can't play current titles any more though] Special Needs: [I'm looking at the Alienware 7 with the 6820k and 8gb 980m for around $2k USD as well as the ASUS G672VY with the same for around $3.4K USD. I prefer the ASUS due to cooling issues that the Alienware has (as well as the fact that I loath the idea of another Dell) A few questions: How hot does that Banshee get? Specifically between the F&G keys (or it's equivalent pocket of heat escaping) what are the temps? Are the 2 mobile gpus (980m) and the 1 full sized gpu (980) interchangeable aftermarket? How much of a plug and play full system is it (more like a desktop?) vs a traditional laptop? If I'd like to change out the CPU at some point, can you do that (Digital Storm) and/or can they change the motherboard out too should the new series of chips require it? How many are out in the market currently? I can't find any Banshee reviews, maybe I'm just not seeing them, but that'd be great. Thanks so much - hopefully these aren't too many questions, or I didn't commit the noob error of not finding these answered somewhere else... but I didn't see much of anything at all on the Banshee, and couldn't see that it had been called something different before either. If I'm wrong, please let me know.] Saved Ticket #: [ my build in the configurator is id=1368723] Specifications: [Chassis Model: Digital Storm Banshee 17.3 Inch Laptop (Model: S:9870) Display: NVIDIA G-Sync - 17.3 Inch (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Anti-glare) LED-Backlit Display Screen Calibration: - No Thanks Processor: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz (Codename Skylake) (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) Thermal Compound: Premium CPU and GPU Thermal Compound (Reduces Thermal & Laptop Noise) Memory: 16GB DDR4 2133MHz Storage Drive 1: SSD - 500GB Samsung 850 EVO Storage Drive 2: Hard Disk - 1TB 7200RPM (SATA 3Gb/s) Optical Drive: - No Thanks Wireless Card: Killer Dual Band Wireless-AC 1525 + Bluetooth (M.2 Socket) Graphics Card(s): 2x SLI (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB (NVIDIA G-Sync + NVIDIA Battery Boost) Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value)] |

Hi Barlaam.... Not a laptop guy so can't answer the questions, but the Banshee is built off the Sager 9870 if you want to Google that and check reviews, etc.
Good Luck. |

personally, i'd go with the single GTX 980 config over the sli 980m's. you've got 2 fans dedicated to a single card. you don't have any issues with the few games that don't support/optimize sli well. it's the cheaper solution. even considering optimal peak performance differences between the two configs (yes, 2x 980m's aka GTX 770's, offer more potential top end performance), i just don't see those differences being all that noteworthy. most of them come at high end (60+fps) rather than minimum fps. Hi and welcome.
I bought the best laptop they had in 2015. Behemoth. They now have the Banshee which is pretty much the Behemoth. Almost have had this a year with zero problems. I have the 2xSLI 980Ms. Have a cooling pad underneath and my computer room is kept very chilled. No heat issues. I have a crap load of games(100+) and never overheated yet. You can see my review in the customer reviews section and compare. Oh and that company that rhymes with hell? I bought an A--------- in 2009 when they first came out. The biggest laptop. And it was garbage from the get go. Had to get my AG involved and the BBB. They sent me a new laptop which was crap. I had been a loyal customer for many, many years. Never again. DS? Best customer service. You don't talk to somebody in India that sends you to 8 other people for hours and still have the same issue. *My opinion only* Competitor name removed. Lol...
I know that rhyming company - used to be a loyal customer as well - and even with a 30% off coupon today I still won't go near them (a-------- refurbs have a 30% off coupon today btw... lol) if anyone wants it it is 30%offa--------GLD Quick question though... Are Digital Storms worth more than a straight up Sager or Eurocom with the same components? What's the premium for? Thanks! :) Competitor name removed. Edited by Snaike - 14 Feb 2016 at 12:33am |

you ever try to deal with Sager support? don't know about Eurocom, but i'd rather have DS support myself. whether that's worth it to you or not is only something you can decide.

Agree. DS has said the difference is their build quality and customer support.
