My DS-built coolermaster 942 HAF X tower is several years old and the CPU fans have always run constant 1,960 rpms (+/-) whenever the machine is on. The noise hasn't bothered me until recently, when I moved the machine to a new room where I need it to run much quieter, especially when the CPU is unstressed (normal PC usage).
The case fans are large and all run at much lower/quieter rpms, so no adjustment needed there. I have tried to use several different BIOS settings and a free Speedcontrol app to adjust the CPU fan speeds/profiles, but nothing I do seems to have any effect at all. It's like the CPU fans are defaulted to full speed and won't accept an override from BIOS or anywhere else. The CPU fans are Corsairs plugged directly into the MB, which is an ASUS P8P67. What am I missing??? Thanks in advance. |

To adjust fans to one of the presets, like normal, turbo, quiet, etc I believe you need to enable Q fan control in Bios first.
If the fan has 3 pin connectors then you might be able to change the speed to a preset but not have the fans adjust to a difference in temps as in a fan curve. That would take a 4 pin fan plugged into a 4 pin header on the mobo. Your mobo manual has a section that explains what’s available with your particular mobo. Hope this helps. |

Thank for the reply. I did already enable Q fan control in BIOS, and then tried the 'Silent' preset as well as (when that did nothing) a manual setting with lower fan curves. After saving each of these new settings and restarting, nothing changed; the CPU fans were still spinning at 1900 rpm regardless of which method I tried.
I don't recall if the fan connectors are 3 or 4 pin. I'll check that out. Any other ideas, anyone? |

A 3 pin fan is voltage controlled and a 4 pin is Pwm controlled. Check the mobo header your fan is plugged into and check the manual that the header will voltage control if a 3 pin.
You might have to select voltage control in the Monitor section of Bios. What cooler do you have ? |

I have the Corsair A70 also. Real nice cooler that’s still cranking after 6 years. Mine runs at full rpm with little or no noise. I wouldn’t adjust it myself, wanting to keep the cooling up for my 4.4 overclock at 1.4 vcore.
Wonder if you have a bad fan. |

FYI... the A70 fans are 3 pin and originally came with speed reduction adapters if you wanted to drop rpm from 2100 to 1600 or so. The speed reduction adapter is a cable that goes between the mobo header and the fans plug. The adapter has a resistor molded into it to drop voltage to the fan.
If you can’t find the adapters from years ago, Amazon has them for cheap. |

Thank you for the help! I will dig out the box of spares that shipped with my machine and see if I can find those voltage-reducing cables. That might be just the thing.
Cheers! |
