So Im getting back in the game so to speak. I have a lot of questions but I guess Ill start with my three biggest.
1) I chose 2x GTX 460's for my GPU(s). Should I opt for a bigger single card and add another in the future? 2) I'm hesitant to overclock. Should I be? Will the liquid cooling I selected be enough if i did in fact choose to overclock? 3) Is anyone familiar with the monitor I selected? Thanks! Here's what i was able to come up with... 1. most will tell ya to go with the single 480. you won't see that much of a difference with two 460's and the 480 will last for a while.
2. don't be afraid to OC. DS does an amazing job. the Asetek LC is poopola to the extreme. you can get better cooling from the Noctua fans. I would go with either of those if you're getting the assassin case.
3. i wouldn't buy the monitor from DS, it doesn't fall under their warranty program. you can probably get something just as good or better from somewhere else for a better price.
you could also go to a 750w power supply since you only have the one vid card.
do you have a specific price range you're trying to stay at? it's better to give that so the nice forums users will come up with a sweet config for ya.

i would go with this build if dont mind going a little over the 3000 you could get a 160GB Solid State Drive and you wont need more then that doubt you will need the 80 though for just programs and stuff

of course the above can be a little over kill with the vid cards. you really don't need two 480's unless you're using a res over 1900x1200. you could go to one 480, drop to a 750 PSU and get a sweet new monitor from elsewhere. you could also change the case up if you didn't like the look of the HAF 932. do you know what resolution you want to game at?it's good to get a small SSD for your OS/apps and put all your games on your 2nd storage drive. games don't really benefit from the speed of the SSD. if you only have 1 video card you won't really need a power supply over 750w. I'd most likely be gaming at 1900 x 1200 on something around 23".
As far as cases go, There's something about the assassin case I just like. What would the hailstorm case offer over the assassin case in the realm of cooling, space, functionality etc. Not too concerned with looks at the moment. |

the assassin is specifically designed for air cooling. the hailstorm is for LCing. if you like the assassin stay with that. i'll re-do a build and post it.
BTW the config pro's haven't even shown up yet. once blah, dragoon, dst show up they can give you better advice.

nrosc 3 is really more than you need for a really solid gaming machine, you said gaming specifically, so i only listed things that would fill that purpose, you could add more storage if you needed it, or more cooling to have a neater looking case, but this will fill all of your gaming needs for far less than 3k
really its in your budget range to add another 480, but youre likely better off pocketing that cash to save for a newer video card down the road(if you did that, you would have to increase the power supply to 1250w as well)

i would not buy a monitor from DSO, you can get a better selection and better warrantys from other online stores
i would not get mcafee, there are plenty of free virus protections that are just as good and take up less space/resources, but that is preference
i wouldnt get a wireless card becuase its not really in line with "serious" pc gaming, but that is also preference
i wouldnt put SC2 on there becuase really you are paying $19 to have the game installed, i dont think they can even test it becuase you have to have a bnet account linked to it, even if they could, still not worth the cost
the asetek has a really bad name on these forums, though i dont really see why. ive yet to see any actual proof that this cooler is near as bad as the bandwagon claims. however, i will say that if youre going to get within $30 of the noctua cpu cooler, you might as well get it anyway, it is significantly better, and you are not in a budget range that will make or break you for an well used $30
you could add a 2nd HDD to this build if you wanted more storage, but unless you are doing more than just gaming, a SSD would not be the first upgrade i would add

So a few notes... I think Ill stick with the assassin case unless someone can give me reason not to. I'm going to go with a single GTX 480 and pocket the extra GPU cash for a later date (thanks ender) For now I think Ill just stick with the standard 500 Gig Hard drive. Finally, after Enders last comment I realize that $3000 is probably overkill so I'm now looking to keep it under 2500. Now another question. little to nothing, the difference between both of these are marginal at best, plus the dual 120s can already push a 930 to 4.0ghz, which is more than you need
basically the difference is the capability to add a 3rd fan to the 2nd stage noctua, which will add even more to the price difference. you would be lucky to see a 3c difference at load without the 3rd fan, its a great concept that went a little too far in my opinion
the rest is looking good, id still consider a sound card if you are under budget, i was very unhappy when i tried to go from my creative xfi gamer sound card to onboard audio... but this only will make a difference if you are using good headphones/speakers

Sure, it's overpriced as hell.  HAF 932 has more room, better air flow, and is over $200 (!) cheaper. |

By the way, do you actually need that wireless card? Because if not you could drop it, add in an 40GB Intel SSD for OS/apps plus a red cathode lighting and still come in under $2000.
I.e. like this: Ticket #428639, Price: $1995 OS/apps on the Intel SSD, games/movies/music/media on the HDD. I pick the red lighting because it matches the HAF 932's default red LED front fan. |
