I was wondering whether anyone here has ever had any experience with damaged keyboards and how to tell whether the damage is hardware, or something with software.I was working on my laptop when suddenly my enter and up/down arrow keys stopped working. I have a Digital Storm E15x laptop from a few years ago and haven't had any problems. If the problem is the keyboard, how can I figure out which keyboard I need to buy to replace my current one?

Is this the built in keyboard or an external one?

If external, is it mechanical ( each key is a switch) or membrane (rubber pad with contacts) ?

Has anything ever been spilled on it?

If it is built in you can try an external keyboard, and if it works it is probably the keyboard rather than software.

I've seen some weird problems resolved with removing the battery and discharging the unit - then reinstall battery and try it.

It is a built in keyboard, I believe each key is membrane...
And now it seems to be working... and all I did was turn it off last night after having it not work...
Well thank you for the help, I'm keeping this post saved just in case it starts happening again. But also, nothing has ever been spilled on it and I know an external keyboard works, thats the only thing I use day to day with it.

Edit: The Enter and arrow keys are still no longer working, but now I've lost my 9 and 6 key on the number pad. I have to assume it is hardware at this point, but I'm going to start up in safe mode and see if the keys work. I don't have my original order number to create a troubleshooting ticket, how could I go about figuring out which keyboard I have?

Edit2: I also wanted to note that I tried discharging the battery with no result =(

Could be that the membrane / board contacts needs to be cleaned - a membrane contact sticking to the board, or another issue like hardware failure.

If you call or e-mail DS they should be able to look up the order number and help with this.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Maybe one of the others has an idea.

If I remember correctly, the X15 laptop was built on the Clevo P151em1/ Sager NP9130 laptops.    You'd have to call DS or Google the laptop for replacement parts.

Here's a video of how the keyboard is removed...

There is a ribbon cable underneath that connects the keyboard to the unit.   A long shot, but re-seating it might help.  But, it's probably the keyboard itself.

Hope this helps.  Big%20Smile

Thanks bprat22 and Pacesetter, I found the Clevo p151em and I think I found my exact keyboard. Appreciate all the info, I'll probably be ordering one soon.
