Topic: Is this a good setup? $3500 budget Posted: 01 Aug 2012 at 1:23am |
So I'm wanting an amazing gaming machine that will last for awhile. I'd like to play on max settings. The budget includes buying a screen. Which I guess I'll get the Samsung 27" from ds. I know most games won't utilize 6 cores but I'd like the 6 cores anyways.

-I would recommend lowering the RAM speed to 1600MHZ. Any performance increase would be small, and it would not be worth the money.
-Also, the 670 is almost as good as the 680, so you could save some cash there with only a 10%-15% performance drop. -Finally, if boot/load time matters to you much, I believe that it is only $17 to upgrade your HDD to the Caviar Black. Also, as a side note, I believe that most people on these forums discourage purchasing your monitor from DS. Edited by Orange7 - 01 Aug 2012 at 4:30am |

I would really consider dropping the 3930k and going with the 3820 the money you save can go to a ssd

The Hailstorm case is really for full liquid cooling. The HAF X case is the best for air cooling. You can find it in the Special Ops Section under Dreadnaught.
A lot of us recommend the Dell UltraSharp Series of monitors. Here is a side by side comparison of 2 Dells and the Samsung at Newegg. I hope this helps.

Yeah I'm thinking about throwing the quad core in instead of the 6 core. And with the cash difference putting the sub zero in. Those dell monitors do look pretty sharp as well.

I'm talking about stage 4 cooling. CPU only. Would it be worth the extra cash?

Hmm i would rather put the money toward a ssd like a 240gb intel 520 and for a cooler use the digital storm branded 240mm sealed unit. That unit will keep your cpu plenty cool and the ssd will really boost the start up time of your computer and any games you install on it.

Nope I'd rather not bump it up 1k. I was looking at some benchmarks and the quad core is better in some things than the 6 core and vice versa. I'm trying to have this system last for awhile. I know most games probably don't use all 6 cores but would it be worth it to get?

No you will be fine with the 4core the only advantage the 3930k has over the 3820 is in video rendering you don't need it

I have both the Hailstorm and the HAF X. My 1st DS computer was the Hailstorm with liquid cooling for the CPU and GPUs very simalar to tju76 picture. My recent purchase was full air cooling with the HAF X. I have an ivy bridge CPU so I went with the D14 air cooler.
The Hailstorm case is great if you want to go full liquid cooling as it only has one 120mm intake fan near the bottom of the case. If you are only going to liquid cool the the CPU then I would get the HAF X as it has a 230mm intake fan at the front and a 200mm intake fan on the side (blows cool air right on the graphics cards. DS will mount the radiator at the top of the case for the CPU. I love both of my systems and haven't had any issues as far as heat goes. It's really a mater of what your budget will allow. Good luck with which ever way you go.

Thanks for your help. I wanna stick with the hailstorm because of the looks and I would like to possibly add full water cool in the future. I just don't have the budget at the moment.

If you want to do that then go with stage 4 it will set you up with a dual bay reservoir so to add full liquid cooling in the future you would just need to add some tubing to the other side of reservoir and run your gpu loop. I would increase budget a lil to include a ssd aswell

Since you want to stick with the Hailstorm here is a build that includes liquid cooling for the CPU and graphics cards. I left the Samsung Monitor in for comparison perposes to your budget only. Ok. I think this is what i'm officially going to do taking in all the feed back. I took of the monitor. I'm probably gonna get a different one or get one from somewhere else.

Drop the ram to the digital storm recomended you will not see a difference in the higher speed and it can cause instability with oc, ds will only do stage 1 oc on 3820 I would raise the psu to the corsair hx 1050 it will future proof your build incase you want to add another 680 down the road, I would also look at liquid cooling the graphics card

I'm late to the topic as usual.
First off (I know you may have solved these things already but..) You don't need subzero - not to mention it has special power requirements, (it could require 2 separate outlets in your house). Moreover, you can do just fine with a lower stage LC option. Get a 670, I think someone said that - itll save you some money. The WD Black should be your "big" HD of choice here. If booting into the computer is a big deal grab the intel SSD - put just the OS and like the top 2 or 3 games you play on it - the rest on the WD Black. I personally would keep the 3930 - its a good processor, however you can do just fine with the lower recommended above. A general tip when building a gaming machine, build around the video card, in this case a 670 is what I would recommend due to cost. I am not sure what the cost is on that monitor but you could get yourself a very very nice Dell IPS monitor for "very little," which is what I recommend. Looking at your build directly above me - you really wanna drop that memory speed to 1600 - you can run into stability issues when the 2k+ is combined with overclocks. You won't notice a different with the 1600 speed. Just about everything else looks good. Remember you can save more money and use it for the dell IPS monitor by changing that 680 to a 670. Let me know what your final final build is. Either way it is gonna rock. |

I think I will drop to the 1600mhz ram and throw an ssd in. Id like to stay with the 680 though. I've heard dell has some good ones. But i'm not sure what really makes a good monitor. I know samsung makes good screens.

Luke,
I own an IPS monitor from Dell.. It is amazing. The colors are like if not better than a plasma IMO. Very nice, very smooth, excellent blacks. |

I really like the look and all the ports on the dell ISP monitors. But the 27 inch has an insane price compared to the 24 inch. I was really wanting a 27 inch. But why is the Samsung so cheap. I know it doesn't have too many ports and it's made out of plastic. But it has hdmi.

Nevermind haha. I just went to best buy to compare. I realized that the Samsung only has a 1920x1080 res on a 27 inch screen. Sounds pretty stupid. Dell has 24 inch with 1920x1200. It's a no brainier. Besides dell's monitor looked crisper.
