Topic: Need best method to upgrade Vanquish to Win10 Posted: 30 Jun 2016 at 7:36pm |

So I have a first generation vanguish level 4 running Win7. I attempted the Win10 update but get strange error (will post that shortly) which prevents the upgrade.
Just trying to figure out the best way to get the machine to a point where it can be upgraded because the free upgrade end Jul 29. Backing up the data is first thing. Is there something with the original discs that can be done? My intent when I upgrade is to do a fresh install of Win10 once I get past the error. Edited by vahju - 30 Jun 2016 at 7:50pm |

When I did research this a while back it seemed that some driver or windows update is causing the problem.
I did disable the update to get Win10 upgrade message but even after enabling that the error appears. Error noted below: Windows 10 Setup There was a problem running this tool. We're not sure what happened, but we're unable to run this tool on your PC. If you continue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support. Have you tried a manual install?
Best wat us a fresh install without upgrade. try downloading it to a usb drive and see if that helps. Is your windows upto date on its updates? |

Yes I have system updates current.
Its been a while since I tried the Windows 10 upgrade assistance and when I did that earlier today the below message appears: Message: Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant Windows 10 will not run on this PC Here is why Windows 10 can't be installed ! Your cpu is supported but I think you need to find an updated driver for it.
Is your mobo drivers upto date? |

Device Manager is stating CPU drivers are from 2006 and when I clicked "update driver" Windows stated driver is up to date.
I don't see an entry in device manager for motherboard. How would I check and update driver? |

If you receive the message that your CPU is not supported in Windows 10, it may be because two reasons. First, you need to ensure that your CPU supports PAE, NX and SSE2 instruction sets. Secondly, you may need to enable a setting in your computer's BIOS (described further down). To test for PAE, NX, and SSE2, download a program called "CPU-Z" and run it. On the main window, look under the "Instructions" heading for SSE2, EM64T (which also indicates the processor supports PAE) and either VT-d or VT-x, which is required for NX support. If you have all 3, then you are good to go. |

Attached is the output from CPUZ:
CPUZ_Specs.txt How would I look at the properties of the CPU in order to take a screenshot? Device Manager doesn't show much and looks like CPUZ output has a lot more detail. Also what setting should be checking in BIOS. By the way thanks for helping me out. I am a power user not really a tech so any help is appreciated. |

open cpz, put the cursor on its window and then press Alt + Print Screen together. Now an image of that cpuz window is saved in your clipboard, to get it out, open ms-paint and paste it in there and save it to your desktop.
now come here and upload it: If you still need more help let me know I will walk you thru. Edited by DST4ME - 02 Jul 2016 at 1:20pm |

For bios
It can be under many different names in the bios, it should be under advance section of it, you are looking for "no execute bit" but it has variations like edb Execute Disabled Bit, and a few more, if you like I can try and walk you thru that also, But first lets look at your cpu tho its most likely the bios setting, but first things first, let check the cpu. Even after that we may have to look at another setting in the bios and make sure that one is enabled also. Edited by DST4ME - 02 Jul 2016 at 2:30pm |

honestly, he has a 3-years old Ivy Bridge so it's going to have the necessary instructions. we're really wasting time in that regard. and more than likely his bios is up to date enough where the NX support is included, it's just a matter of getting him to enable it.

I agree but I'm a detail guy so I don't like to rush pass stuff.
first things first, double check. Thats how I move forward, do it once and do it right. Also IMHO you are moving at your pace, I feel like that is too fast for him, since he already said he is not that technical. So I'm going at his pace. |

if he has bios version 2501 he is up to date.
he might need to dl W10 64-bit chipset drivers though for his specific mobo. go here for the proper drivers: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z77V_LX/HelpDesk_Download/ also, i already checked and his mobo is on the compatibility list for W10 upgrade, so no issues there. OK as expected that looks good, head over to bios and look for something like below, aka "no execute bit" or "execute disabled bit" you want NX enabled

it's a bios setting, so no idea what you're talking about in regards to checking "windows as a last resort".
at any rate, we should just stay focused on helping the op out. |

You can make widows run it with elevated command prompt, but lets hope it does not get there cause that means that all this didn't work.
Worst case scenario we just have him download and install iso from usb. |

Very good let us know, if that still gives you problem go back to bios and make sure virtualization is also enabled. (its the one under the "execute disable bit" in my pic

did you save your bios settings and exit, restart pc, then try the update? just want to make sure.
also, disable any anti-virus programs running. another thing to look at are your locale and region language settings: control panel>clock, language, region settings (make sure it's set to "English") also, make sure required services are set to "automatic": 1. Type services.msc in RUN or Start search box and press Enter. It'll open Services Manager. 2. Now make sure following services are set to Automatic and running properly: Automatic Updates or Windows UpdateBackground Intelligent Transfer Service Server Workstation TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules if you still can't get it to run/complete, you might have to do a manual install by copying the W10 ISO to a flash drive or cd. I haven't read this whole thread, but have you downloaded from Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and selected burn as ISO to a ram stick or DVD? Then you boot to the DVD and try the install. If you change boot order for ram stick, the ram stick has to be plugged in first.
Also, check your Product Key is legit. MS will kick you off certain tasks if not. Not at my rig, so can't remember how to check it. |

with so many failed attempts at upgrading you probably need to reset the updater as well with MS Fix It.

Yes, I did save the BIOS changes before exiting and made sure system rebooted.
Ran repair tool and nothing was found. Ran Windows Update and installed 8 critical updates. Update for "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1 for Windows 7 for x64 (KB3102433)" failed (could this be an issue?). Turned off Microsoft Security Essentials and ran Win10 upgrade again. "Something went wrong" message appeared again (same as above). Edited by vahju - 04 Jul 2016 at 7:42am |

That error can be number of things, from your latest mobo drivers to registry for windows update and etc.
To be honest IMHO if you want to go to win 10 do a fresh install of win 10 from a dvd or usb drive. reason being when you upgrade it can cause problems either now or down the road, fresh install is always the best way to upgrade to a new OS. My advise is to clone your current OS drive to an external and then download win10 as an iso to a dvd or usb drive and boot from that drive and do a fresh install of win10 on the current drive. If something goes bad you can restore your current os exactly as it was before your attempt at win10 upgrade. IF you want we can keep going down the path of trouble shooting so you can upgrade current OS but that can be a while as there are many different things it can be and remember best way to upgrade is a fresh install not an "in place upgrade(upgrading current os to win10)", but if you want you can download win10 as n iso to dvd or usb and do an in place upgrade from it.
