Topic: New Build Help Posted: 18 Dec 2015 at 12:45pm |
Hey everyone, I bought a desktop from digitalstorm almost 5 years ago and it's time for an upgrade. I already have a GTX 980 and a Samsung 850 Pro SSD, but I'd like to upgrade to skylake.
I will be using this PC primarily for gaming at a resolution of 1440p, but since I already have a solid graphics card I'm looking for advice regarding the rest of the build. I'm looking to spend around $1500. This is what I've come up with so far... https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1340194 Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Digital Storm Apollo (Black) Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i5 6600K 3.5GHz (Codename Skylake) (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING (Intel Z170 Chipset) (Up to 5x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series Power Supply: 750W EVGA SuperNOVA (750 B1) Expansion Bay: Option Not Available Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Storage Set 1: - No Thanks Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (1TB SeagateWestern DigitalToshiba) Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 2GB (Includes PhysX) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D15 (Extreme Performance) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Standard Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Automatic Overclocking Boost Graphics Card(s): - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Portable Gaming: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) Thanks in advance for the help! Hi Myrkul23... Nice build.
A couple of suggestions.... Replace the 750w B1 psu with the other EVGA 750 for $43. A better supply with double the warranty. Bronze vs Gold from previous info from DS. Replace the HDD with the WD Black for $19. Same reason, better drive, more reliable and 5 year warranty vs 2 years for Seagate. Unless you plan on your own overclocking I would select level 1 overclock for a small boost in performance. You have the excellent Noctua cooler to handle it. Just an eye candy thing but I would add internal lighting to show it off. Looks good with the window. Hope this helps and good luck. |

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely make those changes. The only other question I had was whether you think there's a different case I should use.

The Corsair 760T, Apollo, case is perfectly fine with good airflow, plenty of room to work and a side window . Your setup will work great in it.
After that, its a personal choice. The Corridium, 450D, is also a nice case and the Air 540 is one of my picks. |

I like that Air 540 case. Two questions about it...
1. Will it easily fit a GTX 980 video card? 2. Would you recommend upgrading the chassis fans? |

The Air 540 will easily hold the 980 and any other card. Dax has tri-sli, 3 x980ti in his.
The stock fans will work just fine. They are the Corsair AF140's and push a lot of air. Edited by bprat22 - 19 Dec 2015 at 10:17am |

Ok, I think I'm ready to take the plunge. This is what I've come up with for the final build. Do you think digital storm will have a problem testing this build without a hard drive? I hate to spend money on a HDD when I have both a SSD and HDDs at home.

Looks great.
I think they need a HDD or SSD to test. or, they'll charge an extra fee to use one of theirs. Not sure. |

Ok, do you think that'll be a problem with Windows activation? My concern is that they use one of their HDDs, install and activate Windows, and then I get the computer. I then remove their HDD and install my own. Will Windows let me activate with new hardware changes?

The HDD they use will be yours, that you payed for, which is what I think you meant but just checking.
When you install your own HDD, you can clone the one that came with the rig to the new one you already have. That assumes you don't want to use the HDD you just payed for. OS will be fine...same hardware. If you mean you have an HDD with OS already on it, then you might have to contact MS because of major hardware change. OS is usually licensed to a particular PC. |

I just wanted to thank everyone for the help. I ordered the system a few days ago and I'm in stage 6. Looking forward to testing it out!

Just received my new system. The cabling is ridiculously good! I ran into one issue though... I want to format my drive and re-install Windows, but I get the following error message during the Windows install...
Any idea how I would go about formatting and installing Windows? |

Delete that partition and then try to install Windows on the unallocated space.

My concern was that I delete that partition and then get the same error message again, at which point I would no longer have any OS installed.
