Topic: Over Clocking Failed? Posted: 18 Jan 2013 at 3:44pm |
I was recently playing Skyrim on my just got DSO rig. The game was running at 1900x1080 with the high resolution texture pack. And the default graphic settings were set to ultra. Suddenly the screen when all blue showing a bunch of white words that I'm not familiar with. Unfortunately I don't remember what any of it said either. I was forced to hold the power button in until she booted down. When I booted her back up it showed a black screen with white words and at the bottom it said "Over Clocking Failed!" and to change something in the bios. It brought me to the bios but sense I don't know what I'm doing I esc'd out and she rebooted back to windows no problem. Should I be worried? Any kind of test I should run maybe?
Thanks to any future help, I appreciate it as I'm still trying to learn a lot of this. Brenden. |

You should give DS Tech Support a call. Sometimes the voltage setting needs a little adjustment to make the overclock even more stable on your home power and your environment there... Pretty common for a new system to need a last tweak to the OC. They try to give you the highest stable OC they can, but it might need to come down another notch to stay stable for you. They can walk you through it over the phone, you'll learn more about the bios OC settings while doing it, and it won't take long....

Hi BShizzle.... The ovrrclock failed can be the memory sticks need to be reseated or go into Bios and load defaults.
Couple of ways to go..... If your uncomfortable doing it yourself call DS right now before they close for the weekend and they'll walk you through it. Or, power off, power on and pulse the DEL key as it boots to get into Bios. Once in Bios, look to the lower right and you'll see where to load default profile hit F5 and then F10 to save and exit. Reboot and the overclock that DS put in is gone for now. You can restore it later after you call DS for them to help tweek it. If that doesn't do it then pull the latch handle on the end of each ram stick, release the stick by pulling up on it and then reseat firmly. Hope this helps. Just saw HockeyBuck's suggestions. Thanks for the help guys! I didn't have anytime to call yesterday. I reset to the default like suggested and I'll give DS a call on Monday and have them walk me through it. I also reseated the memory just in case.

Nice. Did the Overclock failures disappear?
DS will definitely get the oc back and help you tweek it for stability. Good luck. |

Yes the failures disappeared after the reset. I'm highly interested in getting more familiar with over clocking anyway so I think this will be a good start to learn a little |

Just a quick update. I Did find an overclock profile saying 4.5 in the bios and loaded it. I booted up and used occt to see if anything changed and it showed the oc at 4.5 i've been playing skyrim now for about an hour and no problems at all so far.

I would run with it and see what happens. You can always revert back. You are getting pretty good at it.

Skyrim doesn't really stress the CPU very much. You could download and run Prime95. It will stress all the CPU cores to 100% and it is free. Or you could download Aida64. It is a diagnostic and benchmarking tool but it isn't free. Cost is $39.95 for a home license.

i have this same problem overclocking failed. I talked to someone from DS and we went over bios to overclock it , but the overclock don't stick. It would say overclock failed hit f1 to go back into bios. also, the computer would boot on and turn off during the process and the only way for it to boot all the way if i flip the psu switch off then on. it boots normally under default bios though, but that's the problem. Now when I try to play games under bios default the games lags very bad with high cpu usage. changing the performance quality don't help and vsync is off. I would like to be able to solve this problem and not have to pay 200+ to send my computer back to DS office to get it fixed.

I would call DS back and have them work with you getting a stable oc. Usually just a minor tweeking like raising voltage works. If you have all your ram slots filled or using a higher ram clock, above the standard 1600mhz, that can make oc a bit more difficult, but still do- able. Have them quide you into testing your ram sticks with memtest, etc. They'll work with you. Make sure allyour ram is being recognized like during boot on the splash screen.
Good luck. |

Exactly. Give us a call and we can help you out. We can start with a less agressive overclock and scale it up from there. You don't really need to send the system in for us to overclock it for you, we can help you with this over the phone.

yea we went over it for about 2hrs , but couldn't get the OC to stay so he said its best to send it in. do you think because im under default bios settings is the reason that all my games lag?

Its possible no oc is causing lag if the game is cpu heavy but not usually that sensitive. But, could be.
Probably not a cpu heat issue, but download and run the free HWMonitor and watch the cpu core temps while gaming. If they stay under low 80c thrn its good. Just making sure your cooler is working and not causing the cpu to throttle down because of heat. |

ok, i'll try that option, but I probably won't be able to do it while gaming because even navigating through the menu's is super laggy.

Run HWMonitor in the background for awhile while gaming. Exit the game and HWMonitor will have saved max temps along with min and current. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it but is a nice tool to check even you video card temps.
Curious.... whats your specs and the game your running? In the end, with oc'ing its best to work with DS if temps check out ok. Doing it yourself and something happens could effect warranty. Edited by bprat22 - 24 May 2013 at 1:35pm |

Thats a nice rig. Don't see oc being an issue but some games are poorly programmed.
If those games are poorly optimized or don't utilize cores properly, you have 6 cores, you could try disabling hyperthreading to limit core usage. Maybe in Bios or msconfig will do it. Not sure it will help but nothing to lose trying. |

Not sure what you've done or what DS had you try, but if not already tried, I would remove your ram sticks, just a clip in the front to release them, and move them to different slots to reseat them. Have you unplugged and re connected all the cables to the motherboard, especially the 24 pin on the right and 8 pin cable on the top?
You could remove the cmos battery on the mobo for a few minutes, reinstall and re-enter your oc settings in bios. DS has already worked with you and they have alot more tools than we do on the forums. In the end, if none of this works, then you'll have to follow DS's suggestion and send it in. It could be a bad motherboard, cpu, etc. Good Luck.

From reading your description marstorious, I think there is more at play here than just a bad overclock. I'd run through bprat's suggestions (if you haven't already) and see if that alleviates any issues.
