I am planning to upgrade my PSU due to my old one randomly shutting down recently. I was wondering if the power cables that connect to motherboard (i.e. cable to GFX card) would have to be replaced with the one given or can you use the current cable already in use with the old PSU unit?

You should use the cables that come with the new supply. Some psu's have hard wired cables meaning you have no choice. Some are modular, with cables that plug in. I'm sure, with modular, some people have just replaced the box with no issues, using the old cables, but I suggest using the new ones.
