Hello Digital Storm,

Need your feedback on my new build.

Budget:
Not to exceed $1700 for the desktop. Resolution is 1920x1080

Expectations:
I would like to build a new gaming rig, but my concern is that I don't want to have an overkill system. It would appear that the two games I play are not as demanding as others out there.

Usage:
Mainly, flight sims, with some photoshop usage and the need for large storage (iTunes)

Game Specs:
DCS World:
OS: 64-bit Windows 10
DirectX11
CPU: Corei5
Ram: 8GB
Free hard disk space 30GB
Video: 2GB, DirectX11 - compatible

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad:
OS: 64-bit Windows 10
CPU: Intel Core i5/i7 2.6 GHz+
RAM: 4GB+
Storage space: 10GB+
Video: 2GB VRAM or better

Special Needs:
I would like to have two monitors set up, same resolution, one for gaming, the other for basic computing. I have a need for an optical drive, would like to have a SSD, and a large HDD.

Saved Ticket #: Saved build, Vanquish #1489205

Specifications:
As I mentioned above, my concern is that although it would be nice to have a killer machine that I can brag about, it seems that my system requirements would benefit from your expertise.

Thanks for your help,

Woody

I know you said not to exeed $1700 but I had to throw this out there:

Ticket Number: 1492630

Tell me what you think, I changes some stuff for better quality and reliability.

but if you want to stick under $1700 this would be the next best comparing to above:

Ticket Number: 1492647

keep in mind for photoshop the 6700k is best.

Bit of info:

1. Do not install Mcafee , instead get a lighter better anti virus like ESET ( number 3 on the list ) Or any other good light Anti Virus will do.

2. The warranty here is 3 year labor and 1 year parts so if you want higher part warranty be sure to raise the warranty level to the desired level.

Thank you for the two suggestions... and for some reason, I favor the i7

Again, you guys and the community are great.. Quick feedback. Thanks!

This is a little off topic Woody, but since you're into flight sims, I recommend the TrackIR5(head tracking device). It can be very helpful with looking from left to right in the cockpit. Here's a video by Dslyecxi covering the TrackIR5(He plays primarily Arma and a little DCS).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wXx3vMy_AQ

Hope that helps.

Thanks Batman34,

I swear by my TrackIR. Definitely agree with you.

Thats a good one tho I would like a better cpu cooler but to get the build I really want to recommend it would be around $2000. let me know if you are interested.

also I don't know why this version is cheaper but the cpu cooler on this one is little better as far as cooling but I'm not sure how long it will last, if you are cool with chaning the vortex cooler (asetek) yourself then I would go with this one:

Ticket Number: 1492767

but as I mentioned before if you can go to $2000 we can go with better cooling for better oc and reliability but I know budget dictates been there before myself, so if budget is not there then the one you like and the one I just posted are great also.

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on this :

I am open to seeing your recommendation with better cooling.

Reading up on how that all works.

Do I need be concerned about the power source?
The Vanquish is a bit vague as to what the 750W is. Gold or Bronze and what model.

If we go into the $2000 range is it better served to look at the Apollo?

Me personally, I'm purchasing the Apollo in November. My build is around $2300(includes Hydrolux Lite). There are definitely a lot more cooling options. However, I'm pretty sure that DST is not the biggest fan of aio(closed liquid cooling). He does like Noctua and Hyrdolux LC(Light or Pro). We had a discussion not too long ago about cooling options if you are interested.

http://www.digitalstorm.com/forums/vcore-levels-overclock-tidf28710/

DST, if I misspoke for you just let me know.

Well they don't cover the noctua for shipping anymore so I can't recommend it, I'm stuck with the aio for budget builds.

Ok so Yes we would go for apollo but not the case itself to save more money:

Click Image To Go To Configuration Page

When it comes to cooling as mentioned I don't like the aio but we are limit in budget so for the next best option is the h115i, it has more positive reviews than the other aio (all in one) coolers below it.

Keep in mind what I said about mcafee and warranty before.

I don't entirely follow you.

If we oc the i7 6700k then we want lc yes?

Let me ask you, which is better ? A vanquish tweaked to the top with lc or an Apollo at $2k built to your specs ?

What part of the quote was not clear, I can explain better if you let me know what was confusing.

noctua air cooler is a great air cooler and can easily do 4.4GHz on the 6700k, but because ups and fedex can't do their job right, DS says their noctua pc were delivered damaged so they stopped covering it, you can still get it but they won't cover shipping damage to it or from it. And I don't feel comfortable recommending a part that DS won't cover if there is shipping damage.

To answer your question about vanquish vs apollo:

My build is an apollo build, all I did was change the case form apollo to cordium, you don't need a fulltower case for your system, so the midtower cordium is a great case with great airflow.

so in otherwords an apollo case vs has no performance gain but will cost more because of the apollo case.

both of those (my config in cordium or apollo case) vs vanquish comes down to this:

since the cooing my config is better the oc should be better, now nothing is set in stone and each cpu is different, we could endup with 4.4GHz with the vortex cooler on vanquish or h115i on my config, the difference will be that if I had to choose between the two and no other options, its the h115i every time, not only the cooling is better but the main reason is readability is much better with corsair and noise should also be lower with corsair.

keep in mind in my config we have better cooler, we know our mobo, psu also so we know what we are getting.

I hope that answers your questions but if you have more please ask

I don't really think that overclocking is necessary unless you're an extreme gamer that's trying to get every last ounce of performance out of the processor.  All it does is generate more heat, and ultimately shortens the lifespan of the processor.

While overclocking with the Vanquish line appears to still be a free option (you pay for it with Apollo), it's wise to be cognizant of the additional cost of having more fans added.  No matter which line you go with, if you do want overclocking then having the number of fans maxed out is a good idea worth the investment.

I came up with a configuration that focuses more on raw power and quality hard drive options (3 SSDs).

1493010   https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1493010

EDIT-  I should add that I bought a top of the line Vanquish a few months ago and have no regrets.  I actually downgraded my video card and used the saving to make an upgrade to my SSD and also give me the raw power of a 4.0 Skylake processor.

Thank you,

I appreciate the feedback.

I can look at the configuration this evening.

To DST4ME,

I re-read your post and it all makes sense now.

Now I just need to digest it all.

With all do respect that statement is completely false and a common myth.

OC does not shorten the life span of a cpu, not in the sense that it will matter.

A 6700k oced to 4.4GHz to 4.7GHz with a vcore of 1.3v or less will out live the pc its in( over 8 years easy).

You say oc is not necessary when oc actually makes everything the pc does faster but then you go and spend money on 3 ssds, which is a complete waste at this time. I'm not sure if you meant to put those in raid or not but either way they bring no performance gain from any of my config in games/fps. On top of that he is going to use photoshop and oc will bring much more power in those tasks.

No disrespect but I would take my apollo build any day over your config for his use, its only $90 more but it more powerful and I know all the parts in it.

To each his own

DST4ME,

Quick question for you. I see in the coridium build that the psu is 600w when the Vanquish is 750w is that because lc demands less power vs. air cooled.

I'm new to custom builds and just trying to see how everything works together.

Keep in mind in the cordium I tried to save money where ever possible while a 750w would be a better choice the 600w can also do the job, there just will be less head room.

150w for cpu oc, but probably 130w, but lets go with 150w. About 160w from 1070. And the rest will not mount to much. So the 600w can do just fine.

DST4ME,

I was reviewing your build # 1492840.

How does this configuration compare. 1493578

Went with a high power source, lower gpu (1060) but overclocked and what appears to be last years model lc in the corsair H110i GT
I am not gun shy about pricing this thing out over $2k but do I really need 8GB video right now?

All this with intention that in the future I could upgrade the video card if I need it.
Got the power if I need it, got the lc. Got the coridium case for good airflow

All my mates are flying with at most 2GB video cards are are not suffering.

Thx

Flight sims with a gtx 1060 and 1080p monitor will play just fine.    I played most of DCS titles with an older gtx 570 and had zero issues at high settings and the gtx 1060 is much stronger.

I would get the other EVGA 750watt psu for an additional $34.  The B1 is a bronze rated and semi modular connectors.  The other, either a G1 or G2 is gold rated, fully modular connectors for easier swapping and double the warranty.

Good luck.

Going 1060 you will need even less power but if you want to go with 750 we have to go with the non B1 version, don't pay to oc the gpu for no reason, its is very simple to oc yourself for free if needed for fsx its not needed. I can't recommend the h100 it has horrible reviews everywhere I go and I have had bad experience instead of wasting $45 on gpu oc I rather spend $30 and go with h115i that does not have as many bad reveiws as h100/h110. in short your build 1493578 needs to change to Ticket Number: 1493641

Thanks for the updated config, DST4ME:

I am sure this happens often, buyers come to you and say $1700 max for the system and now I am 25% over the original budget.

Can we briefly talk about liquid cooling (mainly the difference between the Corsair H115 and the Hyrdo Lux)

Are both all in ones? Failure rates and the damage it can cause.

Here is a new config: Digital Storm Coridium (Config # 1493711)

If I was to say to you, going back to the original post, but now lets look at $2100 as ultimate max price. Can you build that.

Honestly, I don't think I need more than the GTX 1060 6GB, but amp up in other places. I like the 6700k, I like the mb, the psu.

So, is it important if I know what my 16GB ram manufacture is?
I like the storage we have.

I think we are narrowing it down for me, so I am indebted to you for your time and energy spent on this.

Can you run me one more with the feeback above?

Your config 1493711 is good.

If I was gonna go back and go with 2100. Assuming we are still going with 1060 gtx then I would go with your config 1493711, but for the budget I would go h115i.

the difference between hydro lite and h115i is a few degrees. as for reliability the h115i is new to the market so it has not been around for me to be able to correctly comment on it, unless you want me to pull one from my behind which is not what I do

IMHO you should be ok with both but no matter which you go with always be ready to work on a lc system specially after shipping, you could be fine or you may have to reseat or change some stuff due to shipping damage, not saying it will happen but we need to know its a possibility, anytime you ship anything that is a possibility.

With corsair ram you know what you got and its warranty and corsair is great with warranty, with DS ram you got one year warranty after that good luck, again ram is not that big of deal, but I like to know what I'm getting.

I was thinking more down the line of the third hard drive being for the music. You could take out the third hard drive and save about $200 compared to your config, but if money isn't an issue then you might as well get the most powerful PC for the buck.

I have to admit though that you got me hooked on SSD storage, and I'm already looking at adding an additional 850 EVO. Once you have SSD you don't wanna go back as everything loads so much faster.

Fixed broken quote.
