    Posted: 30 Aug 2016 at 8:55am
Hi all,

I have been using a general usage (Samsung) 1080p monitor with the Digital Storm system that I bought back in 2011, but with my new system on it's way, I have been thinking about moving up to 1440p and a monitor more geared towards gaming. I was curious if anyone had recommendations on decent monitors in the 27" range.

For reference, the spec's on my new system can be found at: 1471692

There seems to be a lot of decent 1440p monitors available, but a few that I have looked at and liked are:

BenQ GW Series GW2765HT

ASUS PB328Q 3

ASUS PB278Q

I also considered staying at 1080 with a better monitor more geared towards gaming and came across this one: BenQ XL2720Z 144Hz

Does anyone have any experience with any of these monitors or have other recommendations that I could look at? Another question that I have is regarding the text size. I have read some comments regarding 1440p that sometimes the text size in games can be hard to read. As a forty-something guy, that's more of a concern than it used to be. Has anyone else found that to be the case for you?

Thanks for any feedback that you can provide.

EVerybody here seems to prefer the acer preditor x34 but that is a 34" monitor.

Is that rig for gaming?

for 27" the acer XB271HU comes highly recommended

yeah, the new system is definitely for gaming (and some light virtualization), but I work from home several days a week and need a monitor that I can use with my laptop as well. This is the system you assisted me with a few weeks back. Currently on Stage 4, but I Know that DS is a bit backlogged right now, which is fine. Giving me plenty of time to back things up.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check out the XB271HU.

Not VR (although that would be nice), virtualization for running Linux VM's on top of windows for some dev type things I do, hence the extra RAM. The 1 TB drive is just for different VMs. The system was ordered just over two weeks ago (got my stage 4 notice last night). I was mainly looking at maybe buying a good gaming monitor to compliment it. Might be best to go check out a 1440 in person just to see if I like the resolution.

Sorry I meant VM but I typed VR.

didn't realize you had already ordered.

the XB271HU is great monitor for gaming you gonna have tough time finding one that is better.

You can always adjust the text size.

Did some Googling and the XB271HU looks nice. Out of stock on Amazon, but I may run by Fry's Electronics on the way home and see if they carry it. Appreciate the feedback.

Good luck I bought the XB271HU 2 weeks ago and am still waiting for it to ship. Hope to have it around the time my PC ships. I probably could have picked one up but decided to stick with a vendor who stands behind their stock and Amazon is a no issue returns so I'll wait for them.

No go with Fry's. That monitor appears to be out of stock everywhere. Wonder if they are moving to a newer model? Anyway, think I'll just keep an eye on Amazon for them to come back into stock. Thank you both for the help.

Looks like they are back in stock from Amazon - XB271HU. Reading some more reviews, but think I am going to order it. Looks like it is exactly what I was after!    Definitely going to blow my leisure budget for a bit though.

Congrat's! I agree - Great day! Monitor came back in stock (ordered and showing as being delivered on the 7th) and I hit Stage 6 today. Be sweet if they both arrived about the same time.

Nice looks like we both should get our monitors and PC's around the same time. That's the only reason I can handle the wait I don't currently have a usable monitor

Woohoo! This is just getting better and better! Hit Stage 7 with the build today, the new monitor is supposed to arrive tomorrow (according to Amazon) and I got a $50 refund from DS because they didn't need to use some extra fans that I paid for. Soon I'll be basking in the glory that is Digital Storm and Deus Ex!

coming in late here, but my Acer Pred XB271HU is still providing me with great visuals.  i just resize my UI in the games i play to account for 47 years old eyesWhoa

i set the over drive setting to normal, didn't oc-just kept it at the native 144Hz refresh.  i adjusted the rgb color, brightness, contrast and gamma settings to my liking.  did not calibrate (no tools).

Thanks for the feedback db188. Mine came in yesterday. Currently have it hooked up to my old system just to make sure everything was working. The 3' DP cable that came with it is too short to use, so I just have it hooked up with HDMI until my 6' cable comes in. Did a pixel test to make sure of no problems there. Definitely had to adjust the text size as the old eyes aren't what they used to be. Even on my old GTX770, everything looks more crisp than on my old Samsung. Can't wait to hook it up to the new rig when it comes in.

Everyone here does not prefer the Acer monitor. In fact, the first gen x34 predator monitor was so bad, I'll probably never buy a high performance Acer monitor for gaming.

For standard 1440p, I loved my PG278Q from ASUS. I run that as a secondary monitor now, since I was finally about to get my PG348Q... which turns out curved 3440x1440 is currently my most favorite resolution to game on. I thought the curved screen would be a little gimmicky, and it kind of is, but it still add's a slightly nice/noticeable immersion aspect to the gaming.

I think any tvs/monitors are pretty much a crap shoot. All you can do is research pick what you can afford and hope you get a few years down the road before any major issue shows up.

Yes and no Hoze928, in a way you are correct but there are ways to combat that.

For example in the case of the monitors we can do some homework, 1. we look at the panel of the monitor, 2. we look refresh rate of the monitor, 3. we check review on tftcentral and look and see what number they came up with as far as other aspects of the monitor. 4. we look at as many review from people as we can we also ask people here on the forums that own the monitor.

Now when you read reviews its important to not just look at overall but look at each individual review and see what they say, I like to look at the one star and 2 star reviews, every single one, I'm looking to see what each person complains about, and I'm also looking for a pattern, aka more then 3 to 5 people that have the same complaint about the product, if I can find a pattern then I'm out. If I see over 13% negative reviews and they are not from DOA, then I'm out.

If you look at the reviews of both monitors here (asus vs acer) you will see the acer XB271HU has 6% negative reviews (4 people out of 92), when you look at the asus PG278Q you see it has a 22% negative review (64 out of 290) and there is a quality issue pattern. The fact that the acer is also consistently out of stock combined with the low negative reviews leads me to put my money on the acer, and let me tell you I'm no acer fan, but that is from long time ago.

the PG348Q is newer so it does not have many reviews yet so I would wait and see, meller says its good so it has that going for it, but its not native 100hz, If I'm going for faster refresh rate then I'm going for native 120/144Hz, so not my cup of tea.

So in short for me if I have to decide which monitor I go with, I would go with the acer based on those facts, and the fact that I hate asus customer service.

to each his own but don't think its a complete gamble, it does not have to be if you take the time to look around.

you can see the reviews I pointed to here:

asus review

Acer review

to each his own

Yea I do the same thing before I buy anything. Reading the reviews is one of the biggest pains but I do it. Too many people rush out to just get the newest thing I would have went for a different monitor but really settled on the g-sync and 144hz and ips. Only a few monitors have those things so it was pretty easy to narrow it down and focus on a couple. I did like that the acer was always going out of stock shows that it is well liked. That website you sent me on how to buy a monitor really helped explain all the tech made it much easier.
