Hi everyone,

As the subject says, I am a returning DS customer (bought my last one back in 2011). It is still a fairly beefy system by most standards, but with the Oculus Rift having dropped, I am looking for an upgrade.

The below info should answer most questions about what I am looking for, but mainly it needs to be VR ready, as dust prohibitive as possible (desert life and cats) and possibly capable of driving two monitors. My current monitor runs at 1080p (1920x1080) and I would likely get the same monitor for a secondary.

I appreciate any feedback that anyone cares to offer.

Thanks!

Shakey

Budget:
$2000 - $3000

Expectations:
Run games smoothly. I currently use only one monitor although I have been thinking about getting a second.

Usage:
Gaming (Fallout 4, GTA 5, just as examples of what I play), general usage and likely VR with the Oculus Rift later in the year.

Special Needs:
I live in the desert which is why I chose the Slade. The vent covers will go a long way in keeping the system clean from dust and the cats. I'll use the SSD mainly for the O/S and the secondary drives for apps, light storage (I have a dedicated NAS for a permanent solution) and a Linux partition which I keep around for some development work I play with from time to time. It will not be used for media as I have a machine dedicated to that.

Hi Shakey... That build looks good to me. I would however change your HDD to the Western Digital blacks for another $29 each, if budget allows.   It is a more reliable and much longer warranty than if you get a Seagate.

For 1080p gaming the 980 is great.   I haven't done a lot of looking into VR, but it is double rendering for the 3D effect so the strongest card you can swing is best.   For 60fps the 980 should be fine.   For higher fps , higher resolution or future games, the 980ti might be better.    980 ti for regular 1080p is a bit much, but VR might make good use of it.   Again, all about the budget and gaming expectations.

Goodluck and hope this helps.

I have a 980 and did a check to see if I was ready for VR. The check system said I was good to go. The minimum requirement was a 970.

Thank you both for the feedback! Another $60 for the Western Digital blacks is definitely doable, so I'll change those. I'll also do some reading on the differences between the 980 and the 980TI.
