Topic: Velox Gaming Build Posted: 06 Jul 2017 at 9:52pm |
Budget:$4-5,000
Expectations: 1440p gaming at 144hz on high/ultra settings. Might dabble into 4k but will spend most time at 1440p and 144hz. Usage: I strictly play games. Not interested in streaming nor do I use programs like photoshop etc. Special Needs: I am interested in watercooling. Is it worth it? Thanks for the help! |

Hi hambino46.... Here's a Velox build for strictly gaming built in the excellent Velox case.
The single gtx 1080 ti is for 1440p gaming. An sli setup with 2 x 1080Ti would be needed for higher graphics on a 4K monitor, but the sli build kicks you well over the $5000 mark. You don't NEED water cooling, but it does keep the cpu and gpu's cooler and gets the heat out of the case better than video cards on air. The video cards will run just fine on air and the cpu will also run well into the safe zone with the less expensive AIO Corsair coolers, but if in the budget and you don't mind a little maintenance and harder to work on, then go for water. Thanks bpratt!
If I were to get two 1080TI in SLI what can I expect for 4k games? Do many games even support SLI? |

Here's an article that'll answer those questions.
http://www.babeltechreviews.com/gtx-1080-ti-sli-performance-25-games/ It shows the difference between one 1080ti and sli. It also showed that 9 of the 25 games didn't scale at all in sli, meaning it they didn't use the sli. |

Got it. So it sounds like it isn't worth it for me as I will be playing 90-95% percent of the time at 1440p 144hz.
I am very interested in watercooling the CPU/GPU. When it comes to maintenance, what can I expect? I am looking at the HydroLux Pro with hard line tubbing that is not copper. I plan on running this PC for the next 5 years. |

I agree. Stick with single card.
Maintenance is usually just topping it off every couple of months or so, depending on your usage, temps, etc. Easy to do. Draining and refilling the entire loop used to be a yearly chore but now goes out 2-3 years from my understanding. I don't do water, so going by others. I personally wouldn't do hardline tubing due to its rigidity and problems it poses if you ever had to work around it, like troubleshooting ram, video cards, etc. It does look real nice, though, and plenty have it with no issues. Just be aware. With me and all my years in field service, everything comes down to simple and easy to work on. But, thats my phobia. |

good data points, I like easy to work on.
A few years down the road if I wanted to upgrade my graphics card it would be a hassle if my old one was water cooled. Yes? |

Not sure it would be a hassle, but more work as far as installing a water block on any new graphics card. Unless you buy one with waterblock installed. DS uses quick disconnects on their flexible tubing, so that makes it unnecessary to drain the loop.

Hi hambino46,
Welcome to DS. Have a Velox with 2x1080 Tis on air (blows it out of the case) and cpu under liquid and it runs very cool. See review under "New Velox" in the General Discussion section. Good luck. Edited by hoserator - 07 Jul 2017 at 1:19pm |
