I would like to upgrade my vido card from Nividia GeForce GTX 570 to a GTX 980. Can my setup handle this or would I need to consider additional upgrades.

Just pull out the 570 and slip in the 980.  Your psu, motherboard, etc are all up to it.

Wait a little bit and upgrade to 1070 so that you can stay upto date longer.

Also I hear the prices of the current cards could drop soon.
