No more 3- and 4-way SLI. If you want to go with 3 or more GPUs, you must now use AMD.
https://www.pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/GeForce-GTX-1080-and-1070-3-Way-and-4-Way-SLI-will-not-be-enabled-games There are select applications, all of which are benchmarking programs, that are enabled for 3- and 4-way SLI. So unless you are professionally benchmarking, there are effectively 0 uses for more than two cards. There may be games that allow 3 or more cards through manually enabling them with multi-display adapter or explicit linked display adapter, but that must be done specifically by the game or game engine developer, so it may be extremely limited, at best. In a technical sense, yes. But now they won't even enable it for any programs but the specific benchmarking ones. The GPUs beyond the first two simply won't be used as the drivers won't include them.

and yet, in the same article, they state that game developers using dx12/vulcan will still be able to "directly access and use" 3 and 4 card configs if desired. kind of a mixed message/facts. if the card drivers "disable" 3-4 way how can the game developer use them?

The driver doesn't enable SLI functionality, but if the software is utilizing MDA or explicit LDA, they can call and interface with all of the cards independently. SLI is just the drivers way of exposing all of the cards as a single display adapter. However, it is dependent on the software to do this, and as they mentioned, games like Ashes of the Singularity only can do this for up to two cards at the moment. It's not to say that it won't be done in the future, but there will be only a very limited number of games that can use more than two Nvidia GPUs.

right, so like i said, how's that different than what's been going on in the past? current games require the developer to optimize/support multi-card scaling. nvidia can create profiles for specific games and fine tune their drivers, but in the end it still comes down to the game developer on how well more than 1 card scales/performs in their games. it's just that somehow, with the launch of Pascal, nvidia thought it was a good time to come out officially and say they're not supporting sli beyond 2 cards.

That was just making it work with the driver. This is a difference similar to that between and SLI setup and a CUDA computer setup. For CUDA, you need to explicitly call the GPUs; for SLI you call the display adapter and the driver figures out the rest. If you're familiar with data analytics, you know the data going into the workflow needs to be correctly formatted for the operation to process correctly.

Not like any of this really matters. People who use 3 way SLI now, should be using things like custom/mod Drivers and Custom bios anyways. So, literally none of this effects though of us who care about it.

Troubleshooting bugs in drivers and firmware sounds like a nightmare to me...count me out.

I have some very good sources for custom bios. They also do Drivers, though I've never used custom drivers... looks like it might be time. I use custom firmware is so much stuff these days. Even my router. Merlin FTW
