Hey all, here's my current dream config, which I would love to get down to $3K if I could:

configurator id: 1602668

Chassis Model: Corsair Carbide Quiet 600Q
Processor: Intel Core i7 6800K 3.4GHz (6-Core) (Unlocked CPU)
Motherboard: ASUS X99-A II (Intel X99 Chipset) (Up to 4x PCI-E Devices)
System Memory: 32GB DDR4 3000MHz Digital Storm Performance Series
Power Supply: 750W EVGA SuperNOVA (750 B1)
Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (500GB Samsung 850 EVO)
Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (2TB Seagate / Toshiba)
Internet Access: Wireless USB ASUS N13 (Supports 802.11n/g/b)
Graphics Card(s): 2x SLI Dual (GeForce GTX 1080 8GB (NVIDIA Founders Edition) (VR Ready)
Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance)

I've got the Asus ROG PG348Q 34-Inch QHD monitor and want to play Witcher 3 in all its shiny Ultra glory. I'll also be using it for Source FIlmmaker.

My main other consideration is the sound level WHILE I am playing--I don't want an airplane roar even while Geralt is whirling his way through a horde of drowners in the middle of a river with his long hair waving in the wind and 20 NPCs wailing in fear on the banks.

Does this look good for my needs? Any suggestions for changes that could bring it down a bit without sacrificing performance? Should I wait for the 1080 Ti?

Any advice welcome! I last built myself a PC about ten years ago, so I am sadly out of date on everything.

you could wait til the end of Feb for GDC and see if Nvidia unveils the 1080ti, but they were mum on it at CES.  there's been no confirmation from Nvidia that there will even be a "ti" version.

as for bringing down the cost, i don't think 2x1080's are needed to drive that ultra wide 1440p monitor, so you can dump one of the cards and save a lot.  you can save some money by downgrading the memory speed or capacity.  i'd go speed before capacity.  there's not much to be gained past 2400MHz.   also, i don't think you need a 6-core for the stated applications you use.  you could save by dropping down to a 7700K.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/gtx-1080-ti-specs-performance-price-release-date

This article claims that Nvidia has leaked it's existence in a job posting. They are also say it could be middle of March before it is launched, as there is no need to compete with their own Titan X card.

I'm thinking prices will be in the $800-900 range, so SLI will push a machine well above $3000.

Here is a config I'd recommend:

Config # 1602877

Chassis
Chassis Model: Corsair Carbide Quiet 400Q

Core Components
Processor: Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2 GHz (Codename Kaby Lake) (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core)
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z270H GAMING (Intel Z270 Chipset) (Up to 3x PCI-E Devices)
System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Digital Storm Performance Series

Power Supply: 850W EVGA SuperNOVA

Storage / Connectivity
Storage Set 1: 1x SSD M.2 (250GB Samsung 960 EVO) (NVM Express)

Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (2TB Western Digital - Black Edition)

Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections)

Graphics / Multimedia
Graphics Card(s): 2x SLI Dual (GeForce GTX 1080 8GB (VR Ready)

Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio

Digital Storm Engineering
Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H115i - 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance)

HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected

HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected

Cable Management: Premium Cable Management (Strategically Routed & Organized for Airflow)
Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans

Digital Storm TwisterBoost Technology
Boost Processor: Stage 3: Overclock CPU - Up to 5.0GHz (Depends on Cooling and Motherboard)

As db188 mention, you can possibly knock off one of the GPU's to save money, although, if you want to keep the framerates up around 100fps, you may want to stick with SLI.

i game on a 1440p monitor (not ultra wide though) with 2x980ti's and i have to say that by and large i'm disappointed with sli scaling.  in most games i'm seeing a lot of wasted performance with the second card-talking about 50% utilization of the primary and the primary not even maxed out, so many times we're talking about 30% and lower on the second card.  online mulitplayer games stress out my cpu ([email protected]) long before my graphics cards are stressed.  it's just so f'ing sad how unoptimized games are in this day and age.

i'll revise my earlier recommendations if you're planning on heavy online mp'er games, a 6-core cpu might just be more important thant sli gpus.

Yeah, if SLI scaling is bad, I'd suggest waiting for the 1080 Ti and get a single GPU. That should be cheaper than dual 1080's. Absolute performance shouldn't be as good, but consistent performance will be much, much better.
