I've got my heart pretty much set on a Vanquish II Level 4, because as someone with no experience, it seems like a perfect one to start off with, and get some upgrading experience.

The Level 4 Vanquish comes with a 600W PSU, and I know that can handle one 980, but what about two? Also, would the i5 it comes with bottleneck under two cards? Removing the CPU cooler and swapping out the processor sounds like the most intimidating upgrade to me.

Also, would Digital Storm's tech support be able to walk me through swapping out GPU's at a later date, or would they prefer that I send it back to them?

A 750 watt psu is recommended minimum for sli 980, but I'd personally go with an 850 watt if I was upgrading.

DS will help over the phone. It's just plugging in the cards, attaching the sli bridge between them and enabling sli in Nvidia Control Panel. And connecting the power connectors from the psu.

DS can help or the forums can help, also.

The cpu in the Vanquish level 4 is no problem.   Very strong processor.

My Kill A Watt says 650 watts being pulled, during 3D Mark with dual 980s, 5930 CPU ( overclocked.)

850 seems like it would be safe

What the others said is true.

But you can save a whole lot of money by just getting another GTX 970 and running them in SLI.

You won't run into much that 970X2 won't handle.

Vanquish II Ultimate.

I've seen a system with an i7-5930K, 4 x 8GB DDR4, a couple SSDs, and SLI 980s running on a 600W PSU. It can be done, but you will be running at the ragged edge.

MJH, that's at the wall, right? You'd have to figure the inefficiencies of the PSU, so I'd place the draw of your system in the high 500W region.

Yes, Kill-A-Wat. Average power draw from the wall. Good clarification.
