Hi guys, im sure this topic comes up a lot but since it's 2015 i'd figure I'd drop a line.

My question is, back in 2012 IPS was really hyped so I bought a Dell U2312HM - not bad, but didn't realize it has no HDMI - diff topic I guess...

Now fast forward to 2015. Dell monitors are still pretty highly regarded but when i googled top gaming monitors, how come they are mentioned only after AOC/Asus/Acer, etc?

So my question comes in 4 folds

1. Are IPS monitors the best for gaming?
2. Which would you buy?
3. If it was a dell - would you go for the 2412M or the U2415?
4. is the HDMI port important? (or lack of on the 2412M)

Thanks as I'm shopping for one....!

Hi darbedo... I'm from the 2011/12 era where Dell was highly recommended in the 23/24" gaming scene.  I have the Dell U2311H and its been great for over 4 years.

Since then a ton of new monitors have surfaced and I haven't kept up.  Others could probably help more.

IPS is the best for color accuracy and contrast.  TN has a faster refresh rate but then I've never seen any lag from my IPS.  I do play at around the 60fps rate so lag wouldn't be seen anyways.  Unless I was looking for 144hz monitors, I'd still go IPS.  There are IPS 144hz but last I looked they were expensive.

HDMI is DVI with audio for the most part.  If the monitor doesn't have speakers then HDMI isn't needed.

Good luck in the monitor hunt.   Lots to pick from and my next one will probably be a hair pulling experience trying to narrow it down.

Ips has the best image quality so I'm always ips. It has the best viewing angle so no need to center yourself in front of the monitor.

I think I own a u2415? Lol its been a while but i think i have one, great monitor.

Because ips is superior, it cost more. That is the downside.

Different strokes for different folks but you can't pay me enough to go back to TN panel.

I'm pretty sure this is the one I use: Asus - 24" LED FHD FreeSync Monitor - Black. I can adjust the overall height of the screen, and I can rotate the screen horizontally and vertically. I've owned this since June and no regrets...then again, I wouldn't mind owning this one if I had bags of gold:
