Hello everyone, I've been looking for about 4 months at different gaming laptops and I finally got my mind set on DS. I was hooked on alienware and was going to give them a try but something is telling me that its a no no and with dedicated americans (no offense here) to help me out in the customer service department was one main reason that I'm going with DS.... that and I get more for my money. That said and done my budget is 1860. I plan on using this laptop for games and school. I do play WOW, bfbc2 and moh etc. I love first person shooters. I can't seem to find that many reviews on DS laptops. I know that for the price I can get a decent desktop but I will be out and about most of the time so thats why I need the laptop. heres there build that I made on DS... the total came out to 1825... Anyone use and love their DS laptop? Let me know some feedback please. Thank you everyone for the words of advice!

this is alex's territory but i wouldn't advise anything under 2.5 ghz for cpu speed since thats the recommended on most games.
how long does this have to last you? |

Hello! Thank you for the reply. I will keep this laptop for at least 2 years. I figured having 4 cores the 2.5 wouldn't be a issue since most gaming rigs usually come stock with i7 740s. I'm not an expert, been 4 years or so sincei built my desk top and never had issues with cod or bfbc2 etc. I'm seriously debating the desktop and getting a cheaper laptop just for school but that's more cash. Tough choice for me

She knows what to say lol besides she gets my old setup that I built and that cost me 4k at the time so shes happy to. I will start researching desktop builds tomorrow and make my purchase payday november 8th. I'm super pumped now

well price comparison for a desktop you can get the same hardware for significantly more in a laptop. also mobile cards don't perform nearly as well as their full sized brothers.
honestly you can get a real cheap laptop with just enough to web surf and do school work for only a few hundred and have 1500 for a kick butt desktop that will absolutely murder that laptop and that would still be in your budget. maybe a fraction more at most. look here for some cheap laptops and explore your options. http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.phtml?sortby=pricelow&N=4294967288&sht=Any&prt=NewProduct if your dead set on a lappy then alex who is the lappy guru should drop by |

Thank you! My budget is 1700 I would just need a keyboard. I was looking at mice and kind of digging the razer mamba.

i currently own the razer mamba i love and hate it. the battery is much lower on a rough mouse pad. it is just as fast wired and wireless. ultra customizable dpi settings but imo not worth the money. i would check out razer salmosa or copperhead. they are still customizable dpi just 3 settings instead of 5 and both wired. honestly if you really want a wireless gaming mouse the mamba is the way to go but i could have been just as happy with either of the other mice.
my hates: sometimes it loses connection and i have to reconnect lower batter life depending on surface if you lose glass that isn't opaque on the bottom you will lose tracking loves: everything else keyboard pick up at your local shop. if not you pay shipping and it isn't covered under dso warranty. ok working on your builds now Edited by Raif - 30 Oct 2010 at 3:32am |

the motherboard for the next 2 builds i normally choose is not in stock and wont be for another 2 weeks. so i am forced to go with a more expensive board. the cheaper board has limitations witht he pci-e bandwidth limiting it to 8x which would gimp a 480 by 5-7%. if i had that board you would be under 1700. the numbers arent in best order just in order i made them.

whats on the 8th?
the board is great on 3 one of my personal favs... it can even do tri sli lol. anytime we are all just here to help and don't worry about it, i had fun. most of us are not employees just fans of dso work! a i7 860 and 950 will perform almost identical, the 950 will shine when have more then 2 gpu cards. the 6 gigs is nice for the future proof aspect i do have to say. if you ever want to add another gpu your psu is not gonna be big enough a 1000 watt would be good for dual of the cards in #3. the cookie cutter template on resolutions is good for most games on high with 4x aa you can run higher resolutions then what i said with the selected cards but you may have to turn down settings and turn off aa. in case you don't know what aa is... it adds shades of grey to jagged items to make them appear smooth, it requires more gpu to do this. the higher the resolution the better it naturally does this and the need for aa decreases. |

That is what I would recommend for the best bang for buck. Great performance now and the ability to add another 6870 in the future when games become more demanding. Lycosa keyboard is great, though that is more of a personal preference. |

Thank you venom! Lots of good choices, my issue is I need to read up on the motherboards that ds offers and the new gpus out there. I'm hating nvidia right now because my 8800 gts sli cards died 2 months aster each other and they were only 3 years old or so

Good move on avoiding Alienware, ever since they were sold (to Dell I think) the quality hasn't been what it was..I have one..it was OK but it was more hype than value.

Ok, after a billion different builds I think I came up with something doable. it comes out to 1773... I had to change the p55m motherboard after seeing some not so good posts about it. Is the board I picked a good board? let me know please guys and gals!

Ok did I miss something? Why on earth would you have two optical drives in this build? (lloking back, Im still not seeing anything noted that requires 2 optical drives)
Id drop one and also go with dual core CPU and try to squeeze in a second GPU Edited by MagiK - 01 Nov 2010 at 12:33pm |

well, I think that blue ray player only played the discs and not burn them. Also wouldnt I be missing out on performance by dropping to a I5? been reading about hypre threading and gaming with the i5 vs the 17 860

Wow may be different but most gaming is GPU centric when it comes to the big bottle necks.

take the 750 over a 2 core for sure
as far as gaming is concerned, you wont see much difference with 750vs860
only very intense multitasking / rendering will show a difference with these two

damn, thats good to know thank you for that tip ender... thank you magik. that gives me a 100 bucks right there. I had no idea that the i5 quad was that good. I looked at a lot of different websites and both had pros and cons but no one broke it down in that small simple few words that I needed... What do you think about the motherboard choice?

Never really looked at that board before, it seems ok, and I like that they are removing legacy crap from the layout....why we are still seeing things like PATA ports, Floppy ports and PS2 connectors I will never know.

hmm tough choices now. I still have about 14 days to decide what I am going to do. It seems I can build a killer pc by spending what it would cost me for building a DS desktop with tax and shipping.... about 2100... But if I had DS build the same build that costs 2100 tax and shipping included from newegg and build myself would save me 500 bucks almost... Now I must weigh do I feel like building a computer right now with my busy life. Pros I save lots of money and get more ram, a 5870 2gig card and a i7950 or Cons downgrade myself and spend 2100 with DS but get the parts tested and have a pretty clean case... I don;t have the patience for cable management... hard choices
