Hello DSO community!

First off, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to you for all of the incredibly helpful information I have found here. This will be my first custom-built system. Thanks to you, I not only feel confident in choosing DS to build the system, I also feel confident that I'm finally (for the first time in my life) going to have my very own "dream machine"! Big%20Smile Ok, now on to some background and the build!

BACKGROUND
Budget: upper limit of around $3,000 for the desktop

Computer use (an all-in-one desktop):
1. Gaming - Due to my present computer limitations, I'm more of a "gamer to be". I dream of playing WoW at ultra settings with max fps (which I want this build to achieve, barring things like dreaded server lag), but I also want to be able to experience a nice variety of other games that are current on the market.
2. Multimedia - Music, movies, photos
3. Other - Internet surfing, MS Office applications

Monitor resolution:
I'm upgrading to a dual monitor setup of 1920x1080 or 1920x1200, in the 22" to 24" range. I'm not sure if I'll actually try to game on both (not sure if it's feasible with this build). I was thinking more that I'll use one for gaming, and the other for tasks like Internet surfing, etc.

Expectations:
I'm trying to build a system that I can maintain for quite a few years to come, needing fairly minimal upgrades if possible (as in, only occassionally upgrading the GPU or eventually going SLI/Crossfire if the need arises).

Here's the build: 471325

I'm also including a partial copy of the build here so that I can address some questions/concerns component by component (seems the easiest way, please bear with me!). Advice, thoughts, etc., on any part of this build are welcomed and appreciated! Will follow-up with DS on any questions that can't be answered here.

Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Black OPS Assassin Edition
I know it's not the typically recommended HAF, but what can I say, I like this case the best out of the offerings. Unless someone out there can tell me that this is a "bad" case (poor cooling, nightmare to upgrade parts like GPU, etc.), then I don't mind spending some extra money here.

Also, anyone know offhand how many 5 1/4" bays there are (looks like 4)?

Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI 3 Edition (USB 3.0 & SATA 6Gb/s) (Model: 131-GT-E767)
Does this board support Crossfire as well as SLI, or just SLI? Unless I misunderstood the reading I've done, I thought that X58 boards supported both SLI and Crossfire.

System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested)
The consensus here seems to be with the "DS Certified" memory, yes?

Power Supply: 1000W Corsair (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible)
"Corsair" or "DS Certified" PSU - struggling a bit with that one... As for selecting a 1000W PSU, I'm trying to keep upgrades as simple as possible and am also not ruling out the possibility of going SLI/Crossfire if it seems a better fit for me in the future. Is a 1000W  PSU even enough for such "protection" (if, say, I wanted to eventually go GTX 570 or GTX 580 SLI)?

Optical Drive 2: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Player (Play Blu-Ray and Play DVDs)
Anyone know the read speeds of this player offhand?

Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB (Includes PhysX Technology)
This has been the hardest part of the decision-making process for me by far. I feel quite torn between the GTX 580, the GTX 570, or even getting a comparable ATI - agh! Though I have the 580 selected, it seems the 570 is the better bang for the buck right now. Then again, I'm trying keep upgrades minimal, so perhaps get the 580 now and SLI the 580 in the future if need be? Just not sure what to do here...

Sound Card: Creative Labs X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional (PCI-Express Slot Based)
I've read that while having a PCI-E interface is nice for a soundcard, it can also physically interfere with large videocard coolers or multiple card setups. Has anyone had any negative issues with this?

Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler
This seems to be the most recommended cooling, though I've also seen some recommendations for the Noctua NH-D14. When would it be more beneficial to go with the Noctua NH-D14 over the NH-U12P?

Whew, well, that's it... I think! Big%20Smile Thank you in advance for your time and any feedback you can provide.

Lisa

Chassis - The Raven 2 is the internal equivalent of the Assassin. Both have 5 5.25" bays. Make sure to inquire that DS has the RV02-E model in stock, however, the original RV02 has design flaws they were corrected in the Assassin, and ported over into the RV02-E. I have a personal preference right now to the RV01 (which I own) in that the FT02's power supply bracket mounting system makes me uneasy, and am heavily awaiting the Raven 3 which sports a ton of practical improvements to the standard chassis.
Since you are going with a noctua anyways, I don't have any complaints against the RV02 or the Assassin. Both are air cooling oriented cases, while the HAF does allow for more flexibility and modularity.

Mobo - Works. Yes, i think it also supports X-Fire

Memory - Works.

PSU - Works. Would suggest HX850 because a 480 typically doesn't need that much juice, but I dunno where you want to go in the future.

Optical Drive - Not sure. Inquire.

Video Card - 580 is currently overpriced a bit. The 570, I'm going with that right now, it's most of the 580's power without the current overprice.

Sound Card - Let others decide. PCI-E and PCI I've heard doesn't make too much different. It will typically not interfere unless you're going triple cards. Remember that any lower sized PCI-E card will work fine in a bigger slot.

Cooling - Good.

Other things - Add cold cathodes. Don't forget the game, T-Shirt, and 4 yr warranty promo.

Well to be honest with you, we can load you up so that just incase you do play on both monitors you have enough or you can tell us for sure if you will do both monitor or not.

the gpu power needed to run 2 monitor for some of the currrent games is gonna be different then what you need with one.

also are you comfortable taking 2 minutes upgrading gpu down teh road or do not want to mess with that, differences are:

you get sli now to cover yourself and pay more, if you don't know how to add a gpu (which btw takes 2 seconds and is very simple) then this can be advantage for you, but you will lose on all the advantages of upgrading, which I will go over below.

or

you get one card now and then down the road if you see you need it you can add a second card then or just upgrade to the newer card then. Kinda like if somebody had sli 275 last year, this year 1 x 580/570 can match or beat the performance of a sli in one card. This is important, cause rule number one in gpu selection is "always go with a single card solution when possible", the reason is that sli has bugs and in some games you can run into trouble with sli, where as a single card won't have that problem. Another good thing about upgrading card later is that, in the future never version of dx11 and such will come out, and this way you can take advantage of geting a second card then, which will support newer technology like lets say dx12, again somebody that got sli 275 last year, can't take advantage of dx11, cause 275 does not support dx11.

so those are the advantages of upgrading later.

so let me know what you like to do, you want the sli now or you want to just upgrade later if the need is there.

of course keep in mind if you want to game on both monitor then you will need sli now and its not a matter of choice anymore cause you would actually have use for sli.

also are you looking to spend the budget if you don't need to or are you looking to spend it no matter what?

if you answer those questions for me, I will be able to better build a custom system for you.

I didn't answer any of our questions, cause once we know which direction you like to go, then we can discuss the parts we gonna choose, I'm gonna show you both ati and nvidia options, and then you can choose, I like the add or upgrade gpu in the future route, cause it give you the most options, and better performance in the long run.

also...pretty much the entire great things about computers is that you can upgrade them...heh. I cry a little inside whenever I see a less tech savvy friend spends $300 more than he needs to buying a whole new computer instead of upgrading, and having to go through all the trouble of transferring all of his/her data as well.

LOL ya I think the biggest deal about DS is that you can upgrade parts instead of spending lots on stuff you don't need now, or buying a new pc later, one of many reason I love DS

WoW is actually pretty low demand, your posted rig, or even a $2000 budget is beyond the scope of worrying about WoW performance

dual 1920x1080 woot! however, you wont be gaming on both. Save a very small group of niche games, almost no one is making use of a 2nd monitor right now. Luckily, you can use your 2nd monitor for anything else without worrying about the  GPU, as this too is well under the scope of your build.

its not so much that the assassin is bad or not... its that (using the staple example) its $212 more than the 932 with nothing to show for it!
I'm not going to tell you not to buy it, if you really like it, its your show, but thats why its uncommonly referenced

yes the sli 3 will do both SLI and Crossfire

yea, you just dont need more than the 6gb@ 1600 these days, even that is pretty overkill

on the power supply we are currently waiting on some real numbers from DSO to help with figuring out what the benefit is from going name brand
on the other hand, the 1000w corsair is not a favorite, it gets a good amount of flame, especially next to the other corsair builds... now, how it stands up to the certified (techNPS) 1000w? dont know yet, but it seems unlikely you would notice any difference

i dont believe 1000w would be a good idea to have with 2x 580s
source it does say w/o limiter on this review, but still..
more on this later

the 580 is sadly really overpriced right now, making it a tough sell.. definitely not worth the $200+ more than the gtx570
However, another thing to think about with this, if you were going to SLI 580s it looks like you would need a 1200w PSU, which means you push the price up even further!
If max GPU power is what you are after, SLI 570s and a 1000w psu is the way to go. But if you are looking for the more sensible option based on price:performance, not max power it would be a gtx 570 and a 750w PSU (obviously, no SLI in the future of this build)

i dont see a creative card getting in your way, even if you went with SLI there would be room left to easily fit a sound card, especially since you havnet listed any other items that would get in they way

the noctua u12p is very commonly reccomended because, given the competition, it cools the quietest at an agreeable price and keeps you well below the safe temp limits even with a notable overclock
I dont personally find the noctua 14 worth the price difference, but if you are an overclocker/enthusiast it can help you get those last few degrees off when you are trying to hit some high clocks

Well the HAF 932 offers better cooling, more room (Assassin is cramped), and is $205 (!) cheaper. However if that isn't enough to persuade you and you like the aesthetics of the Assassin that badly go for it.

I don't even know if DS offers any motherboards that don't support both SLI and CF, but yes, that board supports both.

System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested)
The consensus here seems to be with the "DS Certified" memory, yes?

Sí, señor.

Power Supply: 1000W Corsair (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible)
"Corsair" or "DS Certified" PSU - struggling a bit with that one... You could always select the 1200w Certified for even cheaper than the 1000w Corsair, if you want more padding.

Then again, I'm trying keep upgrades minimal, so perhaps get the 580 now and SLI the 580 in the future if need be? Just not sure what to do here...

Depends on how much power you want, and how much you're willing to spend. A 570 is definitely more bang for the buck by far, with 580s currently terribly overpriced, being only 20% more GPU muscle than a 570 but $219 (55%) more expensive.

If you want the GPU muscle to be able to power through even the hardest to run games currently I'd go with dual SLI 570s. If you're okay with only being able to power through most games and don't mind turning settings down on some and want to keep the PC budget down (for now) then keep a single 570 and larger PSU in case you want to add in another later on. Or if you're really on a budget then just do a single 570 and smaller PSU, but you'll be limited on upgrade options down the road.

I don't see 570 prices coming down much in the future, GPU prices have been bad about stagnating lately, so if you think you want to go the more GPU muscle route I'd recommend just getting both 570s now instead of waiting, personally.

When you've already pretty well decked out the rest of the PC and don't have much else to splurge on. Or if you feel you would want to push the overclock past 3.9GHz on your own at some point and want those few extra degrees cooler.

I understand that although it takes two NVidia video cards to power two monitors, it only takes one ATI card with eyefinity to power two monitors. Please correct me if I got that wrong.

Yeah that's because Nvidia has came out with 3D vision surround which enables you to game with 3 or so.  So, if you plan to try and game across two screens you will have to go with ATI.

Each Nvidia card can run 2 monitors but ati cards (depending on generation) can run up to 6 monitors i think.

with nvidia you can only game on one monitor or three with eyefinity(ati) you can do almost limitless combinations.

running multi monitor and gaming on multi monitor are 2 different things, no single card can run 2 monitors (say 1080p) and give you smooth gaming, on most games.

Yes thats just the technical limits. Hardware limits are you need at least sli for 1920x1080 tri monitor. But still i like the point that amd lets you choose since there are games that will run pretty decent tri monitor in games like black ops or mw2. but crysis no way. still nice to have the option.

Hello again!

Thanks so much for your prompt and helpful responses! Wish I could have gotten back here sooner myself, but work has been hectic this week. Agh, anyway! There are only a few days left to take advantage of the DS sale, so I best get busy here! Big%20Smile

CHASSIS:
I was actually looking at the Raven as an alternate option to the Assassin case. Thanks for the info on the RV02-E. Am I understanding correctly that the primary differences between the two cases are the external appearance and the price?

COLD CATHODES:
I hadn't really considered getting internal system lighting. Is there any function to having this or is it more about the "flaIr"? Hmm, I am partial to the color red... Big%20Smile Can the lighting be turned on and off, I wonder?

MONITOR/GPU/PSU:
Again, thank you for the insights here. It's been a big help in trying to clarify my immediate wants/needs, my future hopes, and realistic expectations for this build.

As for the monitor... I will have a dual monitor set up (1920x1080 or 1920x1200 22-24"), but will definitely be gaming on just one monitor. The real appeal of a dual monitor setup to me is multitasking. I've heard of some people using a 30+" 2560x1600 for gaming and thought to myself "maybe someday," but I think I'll be content with the dual monitor set up I'm getting for a long time.

Regarding the GPU/PSU... When I wrote in my original post of creating a system that would require minimal upgrades for some years to come, GPU is what I had in mind. By "minimal upgrades," I don't mean to imply that I'm anti-upgrade - I just know that I won't be upgrading very often, so my mindset is more "build to last". My goal with this system is to build a good base (e.g., CPU, memory) that will be pretty "current" for quite some time, while also allowing some room to grow (e.g., GPU upgrades-single or switch to SLI/Xfire) over the next 3-5 years or so.

As for how this relates to the choice of GPU/PSU, I keep thinking of what Dragoonseal wrote:
"If you're okay with only being able to power through most games and don't mind turning settings down on some and want to keep the PC budget down (for now) then keep a single 570 and larger PSU in case you want to add in another later on.
"
This seems like it might be the best fitting option for me - even if it means going to a 1200W PSU. In this way, I can access a variety of current games now (even if I can't "max" every single game on the market), while still keeping my GPU upgrade options open.

BUDGET:
$3,000 is about the most I'm looking to spend (a bit more would be fine and less never hurts). This seemed to be a good budget to allow for me to get a nice system with some "extras" that I've been wanting (like SSD).

Hopefully I've answered all of the above questions you had, DST4ME. I do look forward to seeing the various ways this build can be tweaked!

Thanks again for your responses!

yes you can turn cathodes on and off.
the problem with building to last is it would be more effective to just upgrade a single gpu every few years when you need it.

Lights have a switch, and if you have LC with uv liquid then teh uv lights make it look great, kinda like my sig. its about looks and nothing else.

I want you to see this, 2 exact builds, one with assasin, one with haf, the only difference is the case:

$2610 Ticket Number: 471956 HAF

$2815 Ticket Number: 471957 assassin

Notice $200 for the assassin, you still want to pay that?

the price here is with a 160GB ssd, we can drop that to a smaller one and save money if you like, remember:

HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games

HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage

now these are just a base for us to change stuff around in, so let me know, then I can show you ati versions also.

btw there are many games that you will not need to turn anything down to have a smooth game with high settings and 2x aa or 4x aa, like bad company 2

I like dst's build with the haf. plus if you want you can add a sound card since its in you budget but make sure you have good enough speakers.

I just realized dst that your sig and avatar is the first animated gif i have seen in a long time. haha gifs are such a stupid image format, the only good thing is they can be animated.

To be honest, if it was not for the animation, I wouldn't use it at all. Well not counting all the smilies I use

yea i agree. its lack of color support is just terrible. at one point there was some png animation protocal trying to get big but it never got much support and just died.

dual 1920x1080 woot! however, you wont be gaming on both.

Keep in mind that is 16x 8x 8x, Sabertooth is probably a better option.

yea, you just dont need more than the 6gb@ 1600 these days, even that is pretty overkill

on the power supply we are currently waiting on some real numbers from DSO to help with figuring out what the benefit is from going name brand
on the other hand, the 1000w corsair is not a favorite, it gets a good amount of flame, especially next to the other corsair builds... now, how it stands up to the certified (techNPS) 1000w? dont know yet, but it seems unlikely you would notice any difference

Well of course you wont "see" or "notice" a difference, it provides power lol.

You will probably "see" it down the road.

I still highly recommend any Corsair available (except the crap CX series).

source it does say w/o limiter on this review, but still..
more on this later

Corsair 1000w and 2 580s will be fine.

Merry Christmas!

DST4ME, I had to smile when I saw your comparisons of the two builds showing the price difference in the cases... I had done the same thing! Big%20Smile If this was just about function/value, the answer would be clear. It's an aesthetics thing, which is harder to put a price tag on. But, hey, I see that you and the others who responded are trying to look out for my wallet, and I fully respect and appreciate that.

I decided to get a SSD for the very reasons you wrote. I suppose going up to a 160GB SSD could be useful if I wanted to store more games. Are there any other advantages to having a larger SSD?

Heck, I could go up to a larger SSD and PSU, keep all my other "bells and whistles," and still be under my budget limit - woot!

As for ATI, I am still interested in seeing what a comparable ATI build would look like. It seems as though the GTX 570 is getting the most "love," but maybe I'm missing something.

Regarding motherboards and SLI/CF, Venom wrote: "Keep in mind that is 16x 8x 8x, Sabertooth is probably a better option." Can anyone give further details on this?

Thanks in advance.

More room on ssd means just that, in some cases the bigger the ssd the faster the speed of the ssd, in this case I believe intel has the same speed, I'm not sure I have to double check.

lol I went back to look at the builds to show you ati version but none of the tickets work anymore, cause the special deal is over, but in short comparable would be 6970, the 570 wins in most games, in some others the 6970 wins.

Well in tri sli 8x loses just like 4 fps, you have one lane that is 16x and the other 2 are 8x, looks like the asus has 2 x 16x lanes.
