I understand they're hard drives, but what makes them different from a standard HD?

their read, write and seek times are much faster then a standard drive. seek time is what gamers look for, that is what makes the difference to games.

what's the difference in seek time comparing a velocirpator with a SSD?

I believe veloci is 7.1ms and SSD is something like .1ms
