    Posted: 31 Jan 2009 at 8:42pm
Ah yes, so my new DS rig has shown up...

Packaging: FedEx handled the rig well and got it to my apartment (in Seattle) from DS in about a day or two... nice. All folders and additional parts were secure and in good shape... I believe the Stormshield packing on the inside of the case was added at DS sometime after my first DS rig was ordered (about 2.5 years ago)... I like it... it's just cool.

The Rig:  The first thing I looked for was the Vent and Grill paint... which I'd called James up about a day or so after my order to see if they could do green for me (dropdown says blue or red)... he ran off to check and said they could. I'd had a strange dream where I opened up the box to see blue vents/grills... a nightmare it was Smile. I got my special request green paint and I must say I love it.

Upon opening up the case and removing the Stormshield I made a wonderful discovery... my two GTX 295 GPUs were EVGA! It really caught me off guard because I'd originally requested EVGA cards but at the time DS only had Zotacs (also quality) in... so I thought I'd have a couple Zotac cards waiting in there for me... they must have snuck those EVGA in for me Heart.

Upon looking past the GPUs it looked as if everything was the DS norm... the cables were out of the way and secured/hidden nicely... and then I saw it (dun dun DUN) the ram cooler for my 6gb of 1866Mhz OCZ ram had come loose and was resting on my top GPU and one of my LCing tubes!!... of course it took all of about a minute to reattach it Smile. Oddly enough the ram cooler for my OCZ ram was actually a Corsair... thought it was kinda funny.

So basically all was good.

First Boot-Up: Here there was a momentary uh-oh moment. When I first booted up my rig my 30" Dell 3007WFP-HC wasn't displaying anything... it recognized that it was hooked up to something but there was no signal... tried all 4 dual-DVI ports on the 295s but ended up hitting the ol' power button.

The next time it started up it displayed and loaded Vista 64 pretty bloody fast... once Vista was loaded EVGA Precision popped up saying that no supported hardware was detected and I couldn't setup my display to 2560 x 1600... basically what happened was that the Nvidia drivers that were installed 181.22 were giving me trouble... uninstalled them and installed the 181.20 drivers and all was good (Vista loaded even faster and looked quite nice).

So basically this thing is amazing so far... I'll post more on that once I've had time to actually play something, use 3dMark Vantage, etc.

So for an idea of what my old DS rig has compared to my new...

So yeah... bit of an upgrade...

So this is where I'd toss in a few pics of my old rig... a few pics of my new rig next to my old rig... and then more pics of my new rig plus the CPU-Z and HWMonitor (working on 3dMark)... but it's not letting me post pics Wink

So until it stops giving me the ol' Access Denied message when I try to post you'll have to wait for pics... Edit: Ah ha! it's letting me now!

Oh, and don't mind the random crap in the pics... still kinda in the process of unpacking (just moved a while ago).

Old Rig:

Heh, I then realized how dusty it was and blew that sucker out... flash on the camra covered it but it has a pretty heavy green LED glow... with some blue LED fans mixed in...

New Rig:

Reattached ram cooler:

Couldn't get the best picture of the glow...

The OC came out to 3.875Ghz... might push it more later..

Will do 3dMark here in a bit...

Heh I'd have liked to give it more paint... and I probably *could* have but I just couldn't justify spending the extra cash on it.. plus you just see the glow more or less when it's dark.

Tried getting a decent picture of the front without the lights on but it just kept being too dim... the camra is kinda old and doesn't like taking pictures of my computer's lights Big%20smile.

The last picture I have posted is actually of the side with the lights out (side panel taken off)... the purple-ish light on the bottom is the UV (black light?) and the LCing is glowing green... it doesn't really put off any light into the surrounding case... it just glows like crazy itself (glowing brighter in person).

More or less looks like there's some tubes full of... toxic waste? and the UV going from the side. From the front you can see the HAF's red LED around the front fan, the UV green glow (dimmer than the LED red) above that, and then the HAF's little blue (and bright!) light in the upper right...

If you're looking for a brighter internal light that really basks the computer in a glow then I'd say my old rig with it's LEDs put off more of a glow... the UV is more of a self-only glow (with slight light casting on the tube's surroundings).

Hmm... ran the free trial of 3dMark Vantage and it was not quite what I expected...

CPU was 45600
Graphics was only 8867...

Not sure if it's the quad SLI, drivers, or what... was expected a much higher graphics score...

At times throughout the free trial the FPS were dipping into the teens... don't think I saw it go above 60 once... methinks something is off... been seeing graphics scores over 20,000 with a single GTX 295 as well as with 4-way SLI...

Hmm... Fallout 3 just set my settings to Medium after doing automatic detection on my hardware...

Well I uninstalled the 181.20 drivers and reinstalled the 181.22 drivers... and they seem to be working. I went to run 3dMark Vantage again and now it gives me a "SetFullscreenState failed" error when I try to launch the Benchmark Wink

Don't look at the single CPU Cores. Those are wrong temperatures. This isn't the first time, we found out that Hardware Monitor is showing incorrect temperatures on X58 motherboards.

If you want a real temperature reading, it's better to use NVIDIA's system monitor, or try CoreTemp.

If you notice also, at the top, the CPU temperature is at 80'C ish (which is fine for a Overclocked system after a Prime95 stress).

Warm Regards,
Alex

Heh, well I started up Prime95 again with CoreTemp going... CoreTemp actually had the cores showing a higher temp than HWMonitor was/is showing.

HW Monitor shows: 92, 90, 88, 84 (degrees C)
CoreTemp shows: 98, 94, 94, 90 (degrees C)

This is after Prime95 has been running for 9 minutes... then again it is a stress test and HWMonitor shows a CPU temp of 82.

Heh whoops... a few minutes after I posted this CoreTemp reported Core #1 at 100C with core two close to it (under Prime95 stress)... BSOD shortly after Big%20smile

That sucks, this gets me thinking something is wrong or I should go with dual rads!

no this is not because of single rad, his temp are higher then they should be, call DS you may have to send it back for them to look at.

I'm also curious as to why my 3dMark Vantage score was so low... other gtx 295's (both dual and single) using the same drivers have been posting scores well over double what I scored... hell less powerful cards have been kicking the crap out of my graphics score (last run was about 8500). I was getting 20ish fps in places were other 295 setups were getting over 100... hell once I went down to 9 fps...

Started playing Fallout 3 at Ultra settings to distract myself... all was good until I went into V.A.T.S. mode... at which point the fps went to what I'm guessing is around -17. For anyone who has played Fallout 3 and knows what I'm talking about... it's taking a good 15+ seconds for V.A.T.S. mode to shutter it's focus onto a target...

Something else I've noticed... when I've changed the nvidia drivers that I'm using (between the 181.20 and 181.22) not all GPU cores are updated or recognized sometimes. A time or two the Device Manager has recognized 2 of the 4 GPU cores... and even 3 of the 4 GPU cores (yeah... one and a half 295's? Smile). When this has happened I've either had to try to update the driver for that particular core (installs driver and then begins recognizing it) or in the last case I had to uninstall the drivers again, reinstall, and then again reinstall on the cores that it didn't recognize...

As it stands right now... all 4 GPU cores are recognized and are using the 181.20 drivers... Fallout 3 still has the same sluggish Ultra settings feel if I go into VATS (which shouldn't be the case from what others have been posting about Fallout 3 on new rigs?) and 3dMark Vantage fps/graphics score is in the toilet (but the cpu score was 45k or so Smile). Oh, then there's the BSOD on Prime95 and the seemingly high CPU core temps... this is why I work with computers heh, methinks it's time for bed Smile

Edit: I turned the AA back to 4x (was 8x) and it stopped shuttering like crazy when I entered VATS... however, it did crash Fallout 3 the two times I tried to enter VATS at 4x. Who knows, might be a Fallout 3 problem with 295s?

Edit#2!: It turns out that the 181.20 drivers do have a crashing issue with Fallout 3 (generally in VATS)... I still think it shuttered a lot with the 181.22 drivers... but I'm too tired to switch back to the drivers and check. Must get sleep... must get away from computer... Pig

Sucks, before they ship it I will ask them to test it some more. BTW DS you have my permission to take it home and start testing it there in some RL test Embarrassed

On a serious note it would be huge hassle if I have to ship it back from Canada Wink

Do keep us posted, I know DS will take care of this.

See what DsT4ME has done?? Made my confidence in the company go up even before i got my system Ouch

So I woke up today and started thinking about the 8500ish GPU score on Vantage and thought "hey, maybe SLI isn't enabled for some reason". So I wander over to the ol' Nvidia Control Panel, look under 3d settings, and noticed there is no SLI option...

So I first went to check to make sure the Device Manager was recognizing all four GPUs (which it is) and that they were all enabled (which they are)...

This made me think that perhaps the EVGA x58 didn't have SLI mode enabled... restarted, started spaming DEL, BIOS pops up... didn't see anything regarding SLI mode...

So am I blind, looking in the wrong place... or just completely wrong? Big%20smile

should be under nvidia control panal were physx is sli should be right underneath. Are you running performance benchmark?   Reads set sli and physx configuration right under manage 3d settings.

Let's hold on before jumping the gun and having a system sent back for service due to software readings.

There are many things that can play into a high temperature, and honestly, if it is running hot, it may be that you got a really high overclock, and the temperature in your room or how you place the system is adding additional heat into the unit. Second, if that is the case, we would have to lower the aggressiveness on the overclock you have. That is the same thing that would happen if the unit came to our facility. And, this can be resolved with a simple 5 minute phone conversation.

Second, as I mentioned before, I have seen wrong readings with software against the X58 chipset.

Third, does your system have any BSOD's while playing games and using the machine versus running Prime95?

In conclusion, all I am saying is, let's take a moment and step back and properly analyze the situation and look over all variables before we jump to the conclusion of having it sent back for service as that can take quite some time. And honestly, if the pump is working, fluid is moving, etc... there isn't anything wrong with the hardware itself that needs servicing, just tweaking to your environment which our senior techs can help you with.

I am just looking at the quickest and most efficient resolution for the customers satisfaction in mind. Your system is idling at less than 30'C, which is great. Under load the temperatures are obviously going to soar (especially on a quad-core with Hyper-Threading feature 8 processing cores).

Warm Regards,
Alex

Yeah, I wasn't thinking about shipping it back over the CPU temps under Prime95 because well... it's a stress test. I haven't had a BSOD under normal operating conditions and unless I do then I doubt I'll worry too much about the CPU temps (I'll see what the temps do under some heavy gaming.)

Oh, and for a reference the room is maybe 65F and there's plenty of space between my rig and anything else so the vents shouldn't be obstructed.

Right now the thing I'm really trying to troubleshoot is the seemingly low GPU performance... I'm thinking that SLI isn't enabling... the performance almost seems like a single GPU (of the 4) is being used. I have no SLI options in Nvidia Control Panel.

I'm currently using the 181.20 drivers... currently looking through the EVGA forums to troubleshoot...
