I was planning to build with the Q6600 but the Q9450 should be released in Jan. 2008. I suppose I don't mind waiting but do you think it's worthwhile? It will OC better than the current gen chip but I don't know how significant that's going to be. That also assumes it will be readily available from DS

I would say if you want to wait 2 months for Penryn, then two months later something better will come out. If you want to wait go ahead, but keep in mind better and newer stuff will always be coming out.
Plus its always possible that you could wait and find out that they are backordered on Penryn because everyone wants one =]

I wouldn't wait man, the changes they make when technology changes are so gradual(sp?, I am having a brain fart), that it's not worth updating a new processor, motherboard, etc etc right away.
The changes are truely minor to even worry about. That is why people upgrade 4 to 5 years later, because then the change is actually worth it. like me I could of waiting till the 780i board came out then I could use PCIe2.0 but guess what, by the next year a new motherboard is going to come out with PCIe 3.0. So for me to waiting on the 780i board is actually silly and a waste of my time.

Those are good points. Sometimes you need to hear it from someone else
Solo, I never thought about the Penryn's being OOS due to demand. I think that's likely to happen.
ok, I'm gonna configure a $2-2.3k gaming machine w/o monitor.
Appreciate the help!

It's relatively top of the for your price range, minus the GPU only because of the new cards that are coming out in a few weeks. And since DSO uses Evga you can use their step up program if the new cards are up to par.
Also the 780 mobo's should be out this week or next anyhow so you could wait to see if they're worth the extra spending.

The 780i has actually been pushed back to December and maybe into 2008 due to processor compatibility issues =\

Is nVidia still going to make graphic cards for 1.1 once that 2.0 comes out? If not, I am still going to wait awhile before I upgrade everything the motherboard, since I just bought a PC through DSO, using the 680i A1 |

The new GPU's should be backwards compatible, but you'll probably lose some FPS in the exchange.
Speaking of MOBO's, the A1 has been replaced with a different, more expensive one. Where'd this thing come from? Would declining the Lost Planet game lower the cost? Edited by sundowner - 12 Nov 2007 at 10:37pm |

PCI-E 2.0 motherboards and cards are already on the market (X38, 8800GT).
2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.1 and there is no performance gain from 2.0 with the current gen of cards. and for the dso mobo, I do believe they are still using the evga 680i A1, they just readjusted their prices. Edited by skyR - 12 Nov 2007 at 11:05pm |

SkyR, would you say it's really not worth it to wait for these things? I already said it's not worth the wait for me, Since I am pretty damn sure I will get a good 4 to 5 years off of mine untill I need to switch motherboards and processors.

I don't know what anyone else thinks about this, but IMO, don't wait for new tech. There's always new tech coming. No matter what you buy, or when you buy it, there *will* be faster, better, or cheaper in 6 months. That's not a gamble, it's a certainty. IMO, Waiting to buy a system gains you nothing except more time suffering with a system that doesn't do what you need it to do. If you wait for the perfect time to buy, it never comes.

Worth it or not? Matter of opinion since I could tell you that this $100 donut is worth every penny and you would think I'm crazy.
But reality is you are going to be disappointed in the end anyways... The people who purchased GTS & GTX in the summer are disappointed that a $250 card can match the performance of $500 cards... The people who waited and purchased the GT now are going to be disappointed if the 3870 rumors are true... so why wait? Whatever you purchased won't become obsolete overnight... It might not be the best the next day but it still will perform. Edited by skyR - 12 Nov 2007 at 11:57pm |

The new ati's? I read somewhere that they're gonna cost around $2000, so I doubt most of us will be wanting one.
What happened to those 512/1gb cards you were talking about? I heard Nvidia isn't putting any other cards out this year so the ultra can stay on top.

$2,000 ? I remember when they came out with a card that was at $500.00 and it really didn't do anything special then the other cards did. $2,000 though is OMG that is just to much for a graphic card. I wonder what they are trying to accomplish with a stupid price like that. Just think, it would cost $4,000 for 2 of those things. If ATI ever does that then I hope that company flops.
The sad part of it is, there will be some people that will pay that. Edited by Bigdog - 13 Nov 2007 at 12:46am |

I haven't read anything of the sort. 219 Euros is hardly $2000 USD.
What I *have* read, is that the ATI card will deliver performance at nearly the same level as an 8800GT, but with DX 10.1 support, and features GDDR4.

I got two articles mixed up it seems. It's not really a gaming GPU, more for heavy editing and intricate software it seems.

The 3870 is meant to compete with the 8800GT.
It's rumored to have better image quality and MRSP of $230. One person did a benchmark on Crysis and it was only behind the GT by 2 FPS (avg). |

Good points Bill. This computer frenzy really breeds a couple of
contemptuous desires in us all. One, the need to keep up with the
Jones. And two, the need to gratify our own selfish wants.
Has anyone ever just thought about being satisfied with what you bought and not worrying about what's around the corner? We all fall into the marketing trap at one time or another as we're led like cattle to the trough. Marketing companies perform based on the market's decision to be indecisive. They know this market is young and has very little to no control over their basic need to be satisfied 100%. No such thing as 100%. Build you a system, based on your limited or unlimited financial reserves, that will meet your needs and be satisfied with that decision. Of course there will be new products coming out soon, but your ability to succumb to or overcome the desire to upgrade everytime something new that shows up on a website is always going to be rooted in your personal ability to show some foresite and will power too be happy with what you have. I'm sorry, but reading these forums sometimes is like watching a bunch of sharks feeding. Everytime a piece of meat is thrown into the tank, the sharks eat. What I've ordered is sufficient. It works better than what I had and it will last well into the future for what I need. Just dive into the technology that you see and build you a system that will meet your needs. Quit getting wrapped up in the new stuff that is shinier and feel good about a company that can guide you through the process. From what I'm reading, the "process" is getting better all the time. Darn, the menu changed! I'm going to have to re-order a new system since they have better options now! (Tongue and Cheek) |
