Hello everyone Just want to know if it's a good time to buy a new machine or should I wait until the new i9's come out along with the new nvidia cards. I "need" to replace my 4 year old machine. I will have a budget of about 5000 dollars for the machine. Also want to be able to play at 2560x1600 on a new monitor. Any help would be great.

I'm kind of in the same position,I ordered my rig on dec 4 and was waiting on a 5970 card.I added a SSD and another 5970 later(I was going to play on 3x24" monitors in superwide)
while waiting for the cards I changed my mind and decided to wait to hear more about the new nvidia cards. With the pace at which technology moves it's always going to be difficult to decide when to "jump in" |

if you can wait, wait.
otherwise, you can order it now and you always have the option to upgrading the i7 to the i9 when it debutes .. or later when the price drops.

You can always wait, but a decently overclocked i7 920, with 6Gb of fast RAM, 2 overclocked 5870's and a pair of Intel 160Gb SSD's make for a hell of a machine, if the budget allows go for 3 5870's, that rig in a year from now will still be considered a high end gaming rig.
When the next generation stuff comes out there is always growing pains, so keep that in mind.

isn't intel ICHR11 a long ways out? PCIe 3.0 USB 3.0 SATA 6Gbs nearly a year? If it was a couple months maybe worth the wait, but it is going to be a long time isn't it?? I have no Intel Birdies... So I do not know ...

I just meant waiting till fermi comes out, to check and see what is out or not, you are right those probably won't be out ,but he can still decide between fermi and ati and prices should be better also.

waiting for Fermi makes some sense, then wait for the ATI refresh in April, then wait till August for the big boy Fermi.. lol
My point is, getting 3 x 5870 now is a very powerful setup, will beat 2xFermis, but not 3, but will be cheaper.
Yes DST is correct, there will be price adjustments after Fermi's release, and Fermi will beat the 5870, not saying by a lot, but it will beat it, but within the 5870's overclock window. so less than 30%.
I myself am waiting for a reason to upgrade, it might take till the 6000 series of ATI or 400 series from Nvidia the way it is looking.. But if I had a slow machine that could not run todays games at max settings, and had the cash to get a great rig, I would buy today. lol

Well DST is in the loop. lol with your budget, and the money used wisely, you could have an incredible rig now, or for the same money a 10% faster rig in March, or a 20% faster rig in July, or a 30% fater rig in September.. the cycle will (hopefully) never end.

personally i wouldn't but a new comp till win 7 sp1 comes this way bugs are fixed. by then things will change new stuff out, price drops on most things.
i am waiting on that then i am getting a awesome rig. but if it doesn't come out by the time gulftown is out i am going to go nuts and probably order anyway. |

If it's about Windows 7 SP1, you can still buy a system now, and update it to SP1 later which will give you the same result. |

I was about to order a gaming rig and now I am having major second thoughts..
I was ordering the Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Overclocked and 2x CrossFire Dual (ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB).
1. After reading this forum discussion, does it make more sense to wait a little bit for the new stuff?
2. If so, how long would you wait before ordering?
3. What is the key item(s) to wait for and when are they due???

I think a lot depends on what you plan to use the computer for. what resolution you'll be gaming at(if at all?) what games/apps do you expect to be running, and how well you want those to run. new nVidia cards are due around March/April,not sure on the new intel(6 core) cpu's though, there'll be small SSD price drops I guess, and smal price drops to the ATI 5xxx video cards, but nothing major I think. hardest thing is to decide what you need/want,then go from there there's always something new "coming out soon" so that'll always be looming on any computer/technology purchase decisions |

Damon,
are you into 3D. If so that would be the big one. Answer the question ie start from what you are going to do??? Then from there figure out how to do it.

I will be using the rig for mostly gaming at the highest possible resolution on a 30' DELL 3008WFP.
I was also planning on getting a 256GB Solid State (By: Corsair) to go along with the 2 x 5870 and i720 920 2.66GHZ.
To buy or wait...that is the question???

1)How interested (either now or in the near future) to play games with the 3d effect( like the movie Avatar) 2)How much interest do you have in multi monitor gaming? If your answer is not much/no interest to those questions,I cant see a very good reason to wait really, and you'll more than likely have the hardware to upgrade easily(crossfire,6 core intel cpu on 1366,more ssd's) if you prefer nVidia to ATI,waiting until they release good solid info on exactly what they'll be bringing come March /April(hopefully not too long from now info -wise)wouldn't be a bad idea either. |

Damon,
I think Mr DST4 hit most of what your asking here... with #3...
(Quote Mr D)
My pleasure
1. the 5970 can run 2 monitors. it can do Eyefinity also. 2. what do you consider major upgrade? to us that would be a mobo or cpu change. Ram,gpu,HDDs are not major upgrades. only upgrade I might see you do here is maybe adding another 5970 should you need extra power, that is a 2 minute job and not major at all. Problem here is that I'm not sure what kind of a gpu power you need to run 2 instances of wow at the same time on 2 different monitors with a res of 1900 x 1200 each, so I'm thinking the 5970 has you covered. 3. well sometime in 2010 we should get real usb 3.0 and sata 3.0 but that is not for gaming so much, but there is always something around the corner that is better. 4. I'm not a big monitor expert but I have learned that when buying a monitor look for a monitor that has the same Viewing Angle, both vertical and horizontal, and is at or above 170°, this is a sign of a quality panel on a monitor, assuring great picture quality. having said that the Dell UltraSharp U2410 seems to be a good 24" to get. 5. keyboard and mouse I'm not great at either, search the forum and you will find many recommendations in the general section and hardware section.ME said it best. If you need, 3D, USB3.0, SATA (new spec) then wait... for the new GPU and motherboards... but based on your decisions of, processor, GPU, and hard drive
if they are sound then buy.

Need some help on a build. 1. Need a rig that doesn't need to be oc'd to get good/great performance.
2. Need the rig to be a good gaming rig for about 2 years without any upgrades.
3. Want to run 3x 24" monitors with eyefinity .
4. A rig "you" would love to have as your own for gaming.
5. Also has to be less than 5K

oc is great! the price diff from a 920 to 975 (roughly $1000) is huge and you will get minimum the performance of a 975 with oc when you choose a 920 for a oc fee of $45. it is a really cheap way of maximising the pwer of your pc.
you may be concerned with lifespan which is why people shy away from oc a non oc processor will last 10 years before it dies on avg, while a oc processor lasts 8 years on avg. for gaming you will be completly obsolete around year 5 (the best now will be minimum then) and will need a new one anyway. so even with a oc you outlive the computers usefulness. |

just post the ticket number here that way we can load it and look at it and edit it.
you don't need to oc, DS does it for you, its moderate, and with oc you are under warranty, and even with oc your cpu should last you at least 8 years. with oc you save a ton of money and can get better performance from a oced 920 then a stock 975 which cost a $1000 more. RF, Looks like quite the killer rig. I was surprised you didn't take advantage of many of the FREE choices that come with this level.(hose color, case lighting, UV reactive fluid(may not be free) etc.)
Personally I would take the Pro 7 upgrade for the OS, it's insanely cheap.
If you reply your corrected # to the old timers(Justin Kerr, DST4ME), they can advise you on the viability, compatablity, and any possible conflicts with you system choices. These guys have an incredible eye for detail and helped me with my decision making.
Good luck......JPT

I would double check and see if 2 x 5870 will give you 50 to 60fps at 5760x1200 or will you need all 3.
