Is there a significant performance gain from using SATA 2 vs SATA 3 hard drives? What (if any) differences would be seen between a WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM with a 64MB cache that was SATA 2 vs the same drive that was SATA 3? Would it just be a performance gain in terms of accessing the cache? Does SATA 3 only show a significant performance increase with SSD's?
Thank you! |

Hi sneaky George W,
Here is a link to a site where they help people build there own computers. This article is about HDDs and SSDs. Here is a quote from the article concerning your question: "SATA II 3.0Gb/s vs SATA III 6.0Gb/s: No performance difference for hard drives! SATA 3.0 Gb/s (SATA II) and SATA 6.0Gb/s (SATA III) refer to the speed of the connection between the drive and the motherboard. However, the best hard drives reach about 210MB/s (or 1.68Gb/s) in best scenarios. SATA 3.0Gb/s is plenty enough to handle that and for hard drives, SATA 6.0Gb/s does not offer any performance advantage, since the hard drives can’t even max out a SATA II 3.0Gb/s connection." I tried searching for some actually testing data but couldn't come up with any. I keep the site booked marked as they do have good information on computer parts. I hope this helps. |

Hi sneaky George W,
Just wanted to echo everything that Asangard said and add a little real world data. I've transferred 600 GB of large block image data between 2 SATA III WD drives on SATA III connections and hit a rate of a little over 200 MB/sec, not nearly enough to saturate a SATA II connection. Marty |
