What the Avon 18 connects to.

Both Avon 18 builds have the ports below, so a dock, monitors and a wired network work the same on either. The Nova 16 drives three monitors too, from HDMI and its 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports, and both of those ports take power in. It also has 2 USB-A ports and one Ethernet port.

  • 2 × Thunderbolt 5For a dock, fast external drives and monitors; one port also takes power in.
  • Three monitor outputsHDMI and both Thunderbolt 5 ports drive monitors alongside the built-in screen.
  • 2 × EthernetTwo RJ-45 ports, for a wired network at the desk or on site.
  • 2 × USB-AUSB 3.2 Gen 2, one of them a powered port.
  • Wi-Fi 7Intel Wi-Fi 7, with Bluetooth 5.4.
  • HDMI and microSDAn HDMI output, a microSD card reader and a headset jack.

Using it for work?

Our laptops are mobile workstations for the work that leaves the desk. Each kind of work below names the software you run, the build and memory to choose, and the point where a desktop or server takes over. The picks are Avon 18 builds, for their larger graphics memory; the Nova 16 suits CAD and lighter 3D work when weight matters most.

Engineering and manufacturing

For design, manufacturing and quality engineers who take the model to the shop: a part checked against its CAD in the inspection room, a change before the next run, a simulation result reviewed with the shop.

What you run
SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, AutoCAD and Ansys. These are GeForce laptop graphics, so ask us about app support for your release; SOLIDWORKS certifies per configuration, and Autodesk calls unlisted cards untested, not unsupported.
The build to choose
The RTX 5080 with 32 GB. Autodesk recommends 32 GB or more for Inventor 2027 and 64 GB or more for large assemblies (Autodesk). 32 GB adds $273, 64 GB adds $1,057, and 96 GB is the most we offer on this laptop today.

Architecture and construction

For architects, BIM coordinators and site engineers who carry the model onto the site: clash checks with the contractor, changes in the site office, the model in front of the client.

What you run
Revit and AutoCAD, on the 18-inch 2560 × 1600 screen or a site-office monitor over HDMI or Thunderbolt 5.
The build to choose
The RTX 5080 with 64 GB. Autodesk sizes Revit 2027 at 32 GB for a model up to about 600 MB and 64 GB for a model near 1 GB, from their own testing and customer reports (Autodesk). 64 GB adds $1,057.
Where a desktop takes over
Linked sets add to that, and 96 GB is the most we offer on this laptop today; federated models belong on an engineering workstation. See engineering workstations ›

AI and robotics

What you run
Local language models from the Llama, Qwen and Gemma families, detection and segmentation models, and the PyTorch work around them.
The build to choose
The RTX 5090. Its 24 GB holds a model whose 4-bit file is up to about 20 GB, a 30B-class model, with 20% left for context and overhead. The RTX 5080’s 16 GB suits 7 to 14B-class models.
Where a desktop takes over
Training, fine-tuning and 70B-class models belong on a workstation or server: a 70B model’s 4-bit file alone is 42.5 GB. See AI workstations ›

Compare the three side by side.

The Nova 16 trades the bigger screen, Thunderbolt 5 and a second Ethernet port for 3.6 lb less to carry. The two Avon 18 builds differ only in the graphics card, so the choice between them is $780 against the graphics memory your work needs. Rows that differ are marked, and a value shared by builds spans their columns.

How to choose a laptop for your work.

Where the money makes a difference you will notice, and where the smaller build still serves you well.

Start with the size

If the laptop goes in a bag most days, start with the Nova 16. It weighs 4.96 lb and is 0.78 in thick, against 8.6 lb and 1.1 in for the Avon 18. If it mostly works from one desk or one site office, the Avon 18 gives you the bigger screen, Thunderbolt 5, two Ethernet ports and more graphics memory.

Choose the graphics card by its memory

The two Avon 18 builds share the chassis, the Core Ultra 9 290HX, the screen and the ports; only the graphics card differs. The RTX 5090 carries 24 GB of graphics memory against the RTX 5080's 16 GB, for $780 more. Pay for it when your scenes, textures or local models need the room. For games at 2560 × 1600 and for most CAD work, the RTX 5080 keeps that money in your pocket. For local AI models, 24 GB holds a 4-bit file of up to about 20 GB, a 30B-class model, and 16 GB suits 7 to 14B-class models. The Nova 16's RTX 5070 Ti has 12 GB, enough for a 4-bit file of up to about 10 GB: the same 7 to 14B class, with less room left for context. A 70B model's 4-bit file alone is 42.5 GB, which is a workstation job.

Then the memory

Every build starts at 16 GB, which suits games and light work. Autodesk recommends 32 GB or more for Inventor and 64 GB or more for large assemblies (Autodesk, Inventor 2027 system requirements, published May 2026). In the configurator, 32 GB adds $273 and 64 GB adds $1,057, on either laptop. 96 GB is the most we offer today; if your models need more, that is a workstation job.

Storage and Windows

Each build ships with a 2 TB M.2 SSD, and a second drive can be added in the configurator. Windows 11 Home is standard; Windows 11 Pro adds $45, and it is the edition IT teams ask for when laptops join a company domain.

For games

Our laptops are gaming laptops as much as work machines, each with a 2560 × 1600 G-Sync screen: 300Hz on the Nova 16 and 240Hz on the Avon 18. The RTX 5070 Ti is for playing wherever you take it. The RTX 5080 is the build most players need at a desk, and the RTX 5090 is for the highest settings, with creative work on the same machine.

When a desktop is the better buy

If the machine rarely leaves your desk, a desktop holds more memory and graphics and has room to grow. The laptop earns its price when the work has to travel. If you are unsure, tell us what you run and we will say which one fits.

Questions, answered.

What buyers ask before they choose a laptop for work.

Can a laptop handle CAD?

Yes, for CAD and BIM work away from the desk: design reviews, site visits and changes on the move. We suggest the Avon 18 with the RTX 5080, from $3,837, with memory to match your models: 32 GB adds $273. Large assemblies, simulation and all-day modelling at one desk are what our engineering workstations are sized for.

Can I render on a laptop?

Yes. The Avon 18 with the RTX 5090 carries 24 GB of graphics memory, the most we put in a laptop, from $4,617. It suits look development, previews and edits on the road. Long final renders and the largest scenes are faster and cooler on a desktop, like our 3D rendering workstations.

Which laptop is best for engineering work?

If the laptop goes in a bag most days, choose the Nova 16: it weighs 4.96 lb and starts at $2,998. If it mostly works from one desk or a site office, the Avon 18 adds the bigger screen, Thunderbolt 5, two Ethernet ports and up to 24 GB of graphics memory. 96 GB of memory is the most we offer on either. Compare the three builds side by side.

When do I need a desktop instead?

When the machine rarely leaves your desk. A desktop workstation holds far more memory and graphics than a laptop can carry, and it has room to grow. See our engineering workstations, our 3D rendering workstations or every workstation we build. Not sure? Tell us what you run and we will say which one fits.

Can I run local AI models on a laptop?

Yes, smaller ones. The RTX 5090 build's 24 GB holds a 4-bit model file of up to about 20 GB, a 30B-class model. The Nova 16's 12 GB holds about 10 GB, enough for the 7 to 14B class. A 70B model's 4-bit file alone is 42.5 GB, which is a job for one of our AI workstations.
