I want to upgrade from the XMS 800 to the Dominator 1066. Can I do this
myself? It looks awful tight with the 8800GTX video card. Should the memory be put in a certain way? Bottom to top or top to bottom. I bought a grounding strap, but I'm still very nervous. Can some one give me step to step. Do I need to go into Bios. to set things up. I'm a nervous wreck.
Thanks so much,
mpipes

I think, if you are that nervous doing this, that you would be best served by calling DSO and having someone walk you through the process while you are on the phone with them.

Dear Tyler,
I'm sorry for sounding so nervous, I know I can do this. One question.can I install and restart or do I need to go into bios?
Thanks so much,

You can just install and start up the computer. You don't have to do anything in BIOS unless you want to tweak timings.

Dear Tyler,
It's been a while since we've last spoken. I've missed you so and hope that you've gotten over that nasty bout of herpes you contracted from my sister last year. A good quality ointment can help you much if applied in the right area. Do call when you get the chance. Yours specifically, Ed |

mpipes have you tried overclocking your 800 ram?
you should know that 1066 is nothing more than OC'd 800 (or maybe 667?) try boosting the times before you blow cash on new ram IMO

Also make sure your board and your processor support the 1066 - otherwise your wasting your bucks. Look at Newegg for prices as well - 4GB has dropped a bunch in the last few months. They just had a sale the other day. If you put 4 GB in you need a 64bit OS to take advantage of it all though.

Dear Brian,
My grandmother used that phrase all the time to describe a person held in high regard. I'm old,but not that old.

Heh. I use that phrase, and I'm also not *that* old. Maybe it's simply wishful thinking on my part to believe that people could somehow find a way to return to more polite patterns of speech and the written word that placed less emphasis on excrement and fornication when attempting to be expressive.
Anyway, glad I could be of some help, Drumbanger, though I think SkyR's input may have been more useful. ![]() |

Dear John... er Drumbanger or Mpipes or screw it...
dude.
you can do it! If you have an evga board then you need to go to bios and setup the Memory clock to 1066, then set your timings to 5.5.5.15.2T and your voltage to 2.1 or 2.2.

I have a ? along these lines. A website sent a buddy an extra packet of DDR2 OCZ SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 1024MB). I am fine with my current specs (below) but as it is free RAM, should I (could I) drop this in my system?
I am fine with the simple install but would hate to mess up a system that is running great atm. On the other hand I hate to pass up a couple more fps :)
Thanks in advance!

...sorry was editing as you were posting. The OS is the other thing, I feel like I've read so many different things about vista 32bit and RAM. I used to think it would only recognize around 3gb but ive read that its 4gb with sp1 installed.
I figured I would just get some straight answers here before messing with it.

To fully utilize anything more than 2GB of memory you would need a 64bit os. A 32 bit os basically has a memory addressing allocation in place which assigns a certain amount of ram to all your internal hardware. So that's why ppl with a 4gb ram and a 32 bit os gets varied results with their system properties. Some say 2.7, some 2.5... etc.

Thanks Kelly that helps.
So if I was to add this RAM it only looks like i woudl see a small increase in the amount my OS recognizes.
Would I need to mess with the timings at all? If so it doesnt really seem worth it, but if I can just drop it in and boot up I might as well do so.

yes, you would have to adjust the memory timings to 5.5.5.15.2T, set voltage to 2.2, and manually set the frequency to 1066. This is only for the corsair memory though.
Now as far as mixing and matching 800 and 1066 memory, it won't work.

In a word, : "yes"
You can increase the bandwidth (information per second) of your RAM by either increasing the clock speed, or by tightening your timings. It's two roads to the same thing, but sometimes, depending on the motherboard and RAM, pushing the speed higher can be tougher than tweaking the timings, or vice versa. |
