I am a casual gamer but I play mainly RTS (I play COD and Halo on XBOX). I have thousands of pictures/vid (not porn) on my hard drive. I will do some video and picture editing.

Last December my hard drive crashed and almost lost everything. A friend of mine was able to save my data. Anyway I am now a little paranoid about hard drive failures. I now keep my pics on two external hard drives. I want a good solid computer that will last me a while.

Here is my build so far:

Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922
Processor: Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz (Quad Core)
Motherboard: EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports SLI or CrossFire)
System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested)
Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Recommended)
Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 2x (1.5TB Seagate Barracuda (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (SATA) (Extreme Speed)
Set 1 Raid Options: Configure HDD Set 1 to a Raid 1 Config - Mirror Backup (Requires Two HDDs)
Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 22x / CD-Writer 48x)
Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections)
Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB
Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio
Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D14 Extreme Performance (Does NOT fit on the regular EVGA X58 3X SLI)
Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended)
Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition)
Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based)
Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed
Warranty: 3 Year Limited Warranty with Life-Time Customer Support

I am debating between 5 setups:

A-      2 x 1.5gig Raid 1

B-      1x 2 gig + external drive back up

C-      500gig + 1.5Gig for pics/vid + external drive back up

D-      1 x 2 gig + internet back up

E-       Why not… 500gig + 2 x 1.5Gig raid 1

What would be the best choice of data storing solution?

if youre willing to get 2x1.5 tb becuase of how much space you use, i would do this:

1 500gig drive -main
1 1tb drive - media
1 1tb drive - backup for important media / more storage

i think that raid, unless you have super specific needs or very sensitive data, is not worth it. leave out the raid but keep the size.

keep anything that is very important doubled on the 2nd two drives, but you dont have to sacrifice space that would go unaccessible

also consider:
1 tb main
1 tb media
dvd burner + big pack of 8 gig dvdrs

hds can always fail, get zapped, lightning, etc etc. its a better idea imo to have a hard copy backup of something if its important to you

if you buy here you can get a dvd r/w and i believe it is either lite-on or lg, depending on stock, i got a lightscribe last time, it has served me well, even if it can get a little talkative while burning

raid 1 = if one hdd fails, 2nd backs it up
raid 1 = if windows gets utterly messed up, 2nd one gets utterly messed up too
raid 1 = lose one disk space

raid 0 = faster, sorta
raid 0 = unable to move hdds around to diff computers
raid 0 = if booted w/one missing drive, impossible to read one drive

just screw raid altogether, unless you're running 24/7 mission-critical systems

If you want total security and peace of mind you have to take a few steps, but luckily conventional HDDs are very cheap so it doesn't really cost much to do, nor is hard to set up.

First line of defense can be a RAID1 array of two or more drives. This provides a real time mirror backup of the data in the event one of the HDDs decides to die. This will be a much more current and up-to-date backup than occasional external backups to help ensure you don't lose a single file. However this is no replacement for an external backup because lightning, fire, or a computer virus could easily take out all drives in the RAID1 at once.

So have an external backup as well, and occasionally copy the RAID1 array data over to the backup. Keep it unplugged when not in use to protect it from lightning/surges and if possible store it in an off site location to prevent a house fire from taking out both the RAID1 array and the backup.

Optionally, I read you can purchase web space hosting from Google for extremely cheap, and then use it to backup all your files online.

EDIT: Oh, and the rest of that PC config looks great. High-five!

lol I have so many accounts on the web with unlimited space its not even funny, but I would not for a second trust them with my files, security-wise that is, if its nothing personal then ya on line is a good place to store those.

does the size of the main drive really influence the speed of the computer when you compare a 500gig, to a 1tb or 2tb? Not talking about SSD.

Why not get 3 x1tb? Almost the same price...

I would probably use one drive for pictures and the other for videos... those new camcorder that use SD card, there really eat a lot of space...

no difference, i didnt mean it that way, just going on my own preferences.
if you will use the space then get 3x1tb there will not be any difference in performance to the best of my knowledge. only a ssd would make that difference

If I want to buy a multiple 1tb drives from DS can I pick the brand? I would favor WD. It gives the option Seagate/Hitachi/WD

i believe they base what goes in your case on stock, but if you have a strong perference then just make sure you put it in the notes on your order and / or email dso about it and let them know you dont mind waiting
