I'm looking at getting a new monitor, and I'm looking at 24" monitors.  But what exactly are the pros and cons of these resolutions?

1920 X 1200
1920 X 1080

I've been looking through discussions at various forums debating these resolutions, but there is never a clear winner. It seems to really be based on preference.  Unfortunately there are no stores in my area that carry both monitor resolutions, so I can't compare them in person.

My uses:
apps
gaming
movies
possibly hooking up an Xbox 360 in the future

I just want to make sure that I don't choose the wrong res and regret the purchase.

im in the market for a monitor in the same range, and from the reading ive done, the difference is basically a 16:9 to a 16:10 ratio... 1080i or 1080p is the super standard number that everyone is used to hearing along with HD, so from what i can tell.. 1920x1080 is just a marketing line to say things like "true 1080 hd" or whatever.
fact is that there will probably be little difference. but for computer use and computer gaming, 1920x1200 would be the "normal" choice

id say base it on the monitor and price you can get, look at those numbers last

I bought a Dell U2410 over the HP ZR24.  I couldn't find anywhere to see them in person, and I got the Dell for around $500, about $100 more than the HP, but I heard lots of great reviews and just pulled the trigger.

Which input should I use on my Monitor for the best picture?  DVI or HDMI?  Sounds like a dumb question, but I found myself asking this today!?

OK... I knew HDMI carried sound, didn't realize they were the same visually though.

I can say that even with my new monitor just hooked up through my laptop, awaiting DS PC, the picture is awesome and after some minor tweaking the color is pretty darn good.  Just no sense in spending too much time tweaking it for the laptop when the DS rig will have the GTX480.

Alright,  I'll look at the 24" 1920 X 1200.

Now, Through my research it seems that for using the monitor for both pc and console usage (360 or ps3)  that it's best to have a monitor that does 1:1 pixel mapping (i think that what it was called)  in order to provide correct aspect ratios (adding black bars when necessary) instead of abnormally stretching the image.

Now it seems that some monitors have this option and others do not.

any recommendations? opinions?

Thanks!

The 1200 gets you 120 pixels in height, which is useful in general computing and games. I like the extra real estate. In movies, though, it leaves you with the shadowboxing - the black bars at top and bottom, because the movie is in 16x9 ratio. Some people can't stand that.

As to the last question, I understand both nVidia and ATI cards are able to correct for pixel mapping in their softwrare, so it doesn't matter if the monitor does it natively.

I have a Samsung Syncmaster P2770HD 1920x1080 wall mounted in front of my desk for PC gaming.  Running a Opty AMD 185, 2 gigs of ram and a GTX 260 and i couldnt be more happy with gaming.  That is until i buy my new DS rig Sept 1st 2010.

Bought it at Costco store for 399 and now they are like 300.
