All,
I'm wondering if I need to upgrade in preparation for Battlefield 3 release. My truly only concern is my 2 video cards. I believe the GTX 285's are DirectX10 compatible. Motherboard: EVGA X58 3X SLI Processor: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz OC'd to ~3.7GHz air cooled by Noctua NH-U12P High Performance Cooler Memory: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Dominator DHX Hard Drive: 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 2GB) (Includes PhysX Technology) I BELIEVE THESE ARE DIRECTX10 compatible Monitor: 32" Sharp Aquos TV @1920X1080 Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium |

no one knows the games requirements so you need to wait until it comes out. If you want all the dx 11 eye candy yes youll need new video card/s.

As rice said we don't know the game requierments till its out and we can see what it really takes to crank everything up.
Having said that we have seen a demo were a 580 got worked out, and seeing how your sli 285 is around the same performance as a 580, I'm gonna say you gonna want sli 570/580 for bf3 at highest settings with good aa, and of course dx11. IMHO anybody that has the budget should upgrade their gpu/s every 2 to 3 years, your pc will feel new (in games), and you will have the best great performance in future games, something a 2 to 3 year old gpu can't do. Upgrade to a ssd if you can also. btw you got 12GB of system ram, that means you your gpus can't have more then 2GB of ram, in short you can't go with 570 2.5gb or 580 3GB versions. your system with the current 2GB 285s that you have is at its max memory limit. |

DST4ME, As always and like so many others, I value your input and guidance. I know you understand this tech information much better than I do, you did help me put this system together. I wasn't aware there was a cap on VRAM. Is it Motherboard restricted? or OS restricted. Somewhat confused. Also, in reference to the SSD option. Has the technology became much more reliable over the last two years? I seem to recall back when I purchased this system (~July 2009), at least at that time, you weren't that impressed with SSD and suggested I go with the HD i currently have. We all are entitled to change our mind as technology catches up, i'm just wondering what caused to change your mind. Thanks. |

The memory problem is with the OS, home premium can use total of 16GB, I think I recall recommending ultimate/pro to you originally when you were looking for a pc as a day trader.
on your other pc I think we were discussing 6GB of ram. the x58 platform has a limit of 24GB itself. the p67 has a 32GB limit. As for ssds, Back then they were not great at all, but the intel x25 gen 22 and its new version the intel 320 series are wonderful ssds, now controllers are good and reliable and the good ssds have great 4k performance. All ssds are not the same so I would go with the intel 320 series, Crucible C300, M4 are ok also, personally I like the 320 series. good thing you went with the 1000w corsair, cause right now you can upgrade to sli 580 if you wanted to Edited by DST4ME - 19 Jul 2011 at 8:05pm |

Always thinking ahead DST4ME!!!
We are going way back here....Win7 wasn't even released yet. DS sent me a free upgrade coupon. The other computer you are referencing for the day trader was never purchased. He's on his way though but paying off some parents doctor bills. So, lemme get this right. Although the MB RAM and VRAM are different, I'm capped at the total amount of VRAM because of the OS RAM limitations? The max I could go would be two Video cards with 2GB each? That would make it 20 GB, not 24 GB. Sorry for all the questions, I'm just ensuring I purchase the correct video card. I'll definitely get an SSD while I'm going through this upgrade. |

home premium can use total of 16GB, thats system and gpu.
so your system has 12GB, that leaves us with 4GB left, 4GB between 2 gpus will be 2GB per gpu. so your total is always at 16GB, anything over 16GB will not be used. win7/vista pro/ultimate don't have this problem. Also if you had say only 6GB of system ram, then you would have 10GB free so there would be no vram limit, unless each gpu had more then 5GB of vram once you get the ssd you want that to be our os/apps/games drive, aka hdd1. clone the vr to the ssd to move everything over in one shot. you can follow my clone guide here Edited by DST4ME - 19 Jul 2011 at 8:06pm |

Doh, I understand. My math was off. Completely get it now.
Thanks again. I'll be waiting a bit before taking the plunge. Hopefully prices will drop a bit over the next few months. |

Getting the itch to upgrade but read in another one of DST4ME responses new GPU's coming out in Jan 2012.
Not sure of their capabilities, and worth the extra cash for the newest, but it should push down the prices of the current cards on the market. SSD and GPU (perhaps SLI) still on the horizon |

That is the smartest move IMHO, you get to see performance and price will go down on the current ones, so you can decide which makes the most sense then.
