I'm aware of the other thread topic pertaining to speakers but since they're talking about 5.1/7.1 speaker sets I was wondering what the best set of 2.1 speakers are.

Logitech's Z-2300 speakers seem to be pretty good and I was curious how they compare to Logitech's Z Cinema speakers.

Thoughts?

My budget is up to the point where better value would be achieved by buying a 5.1 or beyond system...

For a mid range 2.1, I would recommend   http://www.audioengineusa.com/tech_stuff_a5.php
and this sub  http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-765  If your room is small, this sub works fine, it is the same on my wife uses, she is happy with it.

Nice, those look sick.  Unfortunately I think they'd be a little too big to comfortably share a small desk with two monitors. :(  Size is factor, which is why i previously mentioned those two much smaller systems...sorry for not being clear.

I don't know much regarding which brands are better then others, anyone!?

Audioengine makes a smaller A2 I don't know if they will fit your needs or space requirments but I have the A5's with the S8 sub.  They sound wonderful and I can't tell you how powerful they are.  These are the best speakers I have used.

I have a 2.1 from Altec Lansing. Altec has been man'f quality speakers/loudspeaker for years, at least since the 70's.
I bought these last year and am very pleased with them, especially for the price. Much better than the Logitech speakers they replaced.
I get nice bass response with clear mids and highs. Low profile on your desk too.

Hard to know exactly what level of performance you're looking for, but these speakers satisfy my gaming needs and play music great. I can turn them up without any distortion.

As an alternative, Klipsch is another great speaker company.

If you don't mind spending a little more, I would go with the Bose Companion 3.

I've had a set for about 3 years and love them. The new style is a little different but I'm sure the sound is just as good.

This is a very nice set for your desktop.  I have this set and bought them for my wife.  If you have a Creative sound card then you can use the Creative Console for your mixing.  The Creative Console does a fantastic job with sound mixing; Very versatile.  I highly recommend the Bose set-up, too.

Thanks for all the suggestions, this forum is incredibly helpful. Ouch

I've been doing a lot of research and came across the Razer Mako and i'm kind of curious if anyone has personally heard it because it seems kinda gimmicky...

I tried the Razer Makos, and I returned them to Best Buy after 1 day. They had way too much bass even when the bass was turned down. They were also very hard to control. Just turning the volume up or down was a pain in the butt. I don't know what they were thinking with that wacky control.

I ended up buying a Bose Companion 3 system, and I've been quite happy. I wish the Bose system had bass control on the puck, but other than that it's a great system.
