Just for the fun of it, I asked because I will be out of town in May and I don't want the machine to be delivered then. I posted this here in case there are people ordering, they may want to know. I ordered mine on 2-11-2010 Here is the quote I received...
"As of this time we are unable to provide a clear delivery date. This is due to the fact that one of the parts you requested is on back order. The ATI 5970 graphics card is on a national back order. There is no clear eta from our vendors. We apologize for the delay and will keep you informed as to the status of your build." Does seem a little strange that it is in Stage 5 testing. How can they stress test a machine with no video card? Edited by Grandpa - 01 Mar 2010 at 2:24pm |

So, just for the fun of it, I logged into NewEgg, pulled up the HD5970 and did a auto notify. That way I would know when these cards are available. An hour later this is what I got. WTF? Should I order the card from NewEgg and mail it to DS?
"Thank you for choosing Newegg.com. The below items has come in stock as of 03/01/2010 and we are sending you this notification per your request. Auto-Notify is one of many conveniences we provide at Newegg.com (Please Note: because others may be waiting for this item as well, we cannot guarantee price or availability). Grandpa, the 5970 has been on back order for a long time, places like newegg will get a few here and there but those places have nothing to do with how nvidia/ati partners send places like DS parts.
also 2 x 5870 is much better then 5970, and available, so I don't remember your build, but if you are gaming and you truly need a 5970 to run games at highest settings and etc, then go with 2 x 5870. if you don't want to wait then ya call DS and see what you need to do to buy from newegg and send it to DS. but again I would not go with 5970, but its your build so you got to go with what you like. I know. I was just being a wiseass. I have a 24" monitor and I had 2 5870's in my computer for three days. My Wife even said "Why would anyone want a computer that loud". The temps on the cards was 43c on the bottom and 55c on the top at idle. The top card fan was louder than the bottom one because it was warmer. My thinking is, of course, with one 5970 I get the added performance with less noise. Please don't say I don't need that much graphics power. When I was running the two cards there were games I could tell the difference, plus I'm getting the H20 cooling on it to help with the noise. If you could guarantee me two 5870's wouldn't make any more noise than one 5970 I'd jump all over it!

I can't garuntee you that since I don't have them, but the 5970's fan will not bring less noise IMO, justin might know somebody that has both, maybe he can knows.
what games did you notice a difference in and what were the settings? |

It is true that Newegg gets 1 or 2 in here and there. Our situation is no different. We grab any 5970's that we can. We are working with all of our vendors, and the manufacturers in an attempt to get as many cards as we can to keep the orders moving along as smoothly as possible.
We are doing everything in our power to fulfill orders with 5970's, but unfortunately since we do not manufacturer the cards ourselves, our hands are a bit tied. So what are we doing in an effort to make all customers aware of this? Whenever a new customer places an order, whether it be with me over the phone, or online, I personally give them a call and let them know the situation on the video cards and give them the option to wait it out, or to change to a different set of cards.

stock, 1 5970 has less performance than 2 5870's, and the 5970 will run hotter. If you would have set up a fan profile in MSI afterburner the cards could have been silent at idle, and still very quiet gaming, if V snyc was enabled so that the cards would not be worked very hard.

Basic games like COD2MW settings maxed out. It runs smoother. Not alot, but enough to notice if you've used 2 5870's.

Of course not! I'm saying that I notice a difference between 2 5870's and 1 5870 in performance and noise.

MW2 is a console game ported, so pretty much any graphics card can run it maxed, 200 FPS at 1920x1200 all settings max is no problem with two 4890's. lol

smooth = yes but not quite as much as with two of them. Hard to describe, movement in the game was slightly faster.
aa set to max, everything set to max It certainly is acceptable. But, borderline based on my judgment after using two cards. My desire for the 5970 is more for future games that may demand more. No bs on the top card though. It runs hotter pulling in the heat from the bottom card. And it ran like it was in a game all the time, even at idle. rpm was 1000 or more higher on it than the bottom card in idle. top temp was 83c with ambient room temp at 72f while playing games.(using cosmos 1000 case, not the worlds best for circulation). Remember, I'm only running a Q9650 non oc. That may be why I noticed some difference in performance between having 1 or 2 cards. |

yes the top card does run warmer, which is why we tell people whenever they can to go for a mobo that has space between its x16 lanes, like the classified with lanes 1 and 3, tho your temps are still fine, and I think the stock 9650 could have some effect on the fps then a oced one, also the benchmarks I have seen has had the aa at 4x.
thanks for the info lol now I'm beginning to wonder if you two are talking about the same game, cause justin can max it out and you are saying you need 2. you are right the future may demand more, for me I like to get just want I need now and put the rest of the money toward a future graphic card, that way I end-up spending pretty much the same money but every 2 or 3 years my gpu gets upgraded to a newest one, example, I buy 1 x 5870 now, and same the money from the second one and put it toward a new gpu in 2 years, so in 2 years I would get a theoretical 7870 and have spend the same money but my 7870 will be more powerful and dx13 or whatever capable thus doing much better in games from that time. but thats just me, different strokes for different folks, like I always say, its your pc, you got to get what you like
fyi, the 5970 is like 2 x 5870 but with less performance, its gonna run warm because of that and I believe the fan noise is gonna be the same if not more. if still endup getting it, let us know how it goes. Edited by DST4ME - 01 Mar 2010 at 7:44pm |
