Howdy,
My last computer was a laptop which died as a result of a poorly designed HP GPU heat-sink, and I was wondering if I would be able to install the 2.5" HDD it into my new DS system. I just bought the Protus workstation in the same case as the Hailstorm (Corsair 8000D, I believe). It came with a whole bunch of wires and connectors and such, though their intended purpose is a bit beyond me. Will the case support a 2.5" inch, or is this a stupid question because regardless of the case, it's simply not compatible? I just need to get some old CAD files off it so I don't mind buying a cheapo USB enclosure, but it would be nice if I could make it a permanent back up HDD. If it is possible, please treat me like a stupid child when explaining how. I really will have no idea what I am doing and will only have a vague understanding of the components involved. Thanks in advance! |

Yes, the front hot-swap bay is tapped to also mount SSDs, which are in the 2.5" form factor. Should run fine.

My neighbor told me not to because he said that it runs at 5v rather than whatever voltage a desktop runs at and it could fry the HDD. He claimed it happened to him, though it doubt it was in hot-swap bay.
So if it's okay, do I just pop it in any-ol' bay or is there a certain once? And I guess it's already wired up? |

And looking at the slots in the hot-swap, it seems my HDD is much too small to fit in the tray and plug in.

Alright, well I looked up how to install it and the first hurdle I encountered was the lack of mounting screw holes on the HDD.I took The mounting bracket for the laptop case and, behold, regular mounting screw holes.
So I mounted it to the tray exactly as explained and pictured on the Corsair guide for the 2.5 SSD. Did the off set and triple checked that I wasn't doing anything stupid. Tried inserting it in the bay and it would not fit. Being a Diesel Tech I know I could fit the sucker in there with enough fiddling, but I do not know if it would be lined up in the manner needed for a 2.5" drive. The Corsair website explained "This offset lines the SSD power and data connector up with the proper connectors in the hot-swap backplane" so I don't want to accidentally jam it in wrong. It seems that the two plastic tabs on either side of the SATA connector on the drive is hitting something. This drive is clearly not designed for this purpose and I think I should give it because losing the files on it would be a big, big problem. |

I'm not sure what the corsair looks like but I connected my vertex le ssd from teh bottom, sometimes, it takes a little gentle jiggling, but it goes right in.

Upon further review, I definitely cannot connect it as the SATA on the HDD has a plastic bridge across the two ports that prevent it from going in. It looks like Fujitsu made it specifically for the HP Pavilion laptops.

So I finally managed to get it connected. Had to drill two new mounting holes to the tray and break off this stupid plastic bridge that got in the way of the port. Anyway, it popped right in and it shows up in the safely remove hardware section, and it also shows up in the devices menu.
However, I cannot access any of the files or do anything to it. I tried updating the driver but Windows says it's up to date. Is there something I have to do like formating in order to get it working properly? Thanks. |

I must also add that the laptop was running Ubuntu before I removed the disk, so I doubt it's drop in ready in Windows. Last time I have used Windows was Win98 so I'm this is brand new to me.

Yes, all sorted. I'm on Ubuntu transferring files right now.
I was online for a couple of hours. looking up this issue with no help until I realized anyone in this situation would just boot up in Linux to access the files.
This was a learning experience and every step was
