Topic: 2 GPU / Monitor questions Posted: 07 Mar 2014 at 6:30am |
2 odd questions about GPUs and monitors.
From what I understand, HDMI is just DVI w/ sound, and if you're not interested in sound coming from your monitor, HDMI is not a necessary connection, correct?
If your monitor and GPU both have a DVI and VGA ports, and you use the VGA cord and ports, what difference will it make?
Thanks.. just curious...

Bprat didn't get to answer first this time...lol
There is a noticeable difference in the quality of your display with higher resolution monitors when a DVI cable is used. Its like when you buy a blu ray player or a ps3, you don't want to use the component cables that are provided with it, you want to use an hdmi cord because you will get better picture quality and it makes sense using hdmi to watch blu rays or play video games. I'm not sure any new graphics cards have VGA anymore. If you see a VGA port on the back of the rig, its probably for the integrated graphics motherboard port and isn't used. Yep, VGA is analog and prone to ghosting, interference, etc and the others are digital. Some see no difference but its usually there somewhere. Edited by bprat22 - 07 Mar 2014 at 7:58am |

Thank you both... especially ArkansasWoman.. for actually getting here before bprat.. that's quite an accomplishment.
All the talk around here in other threads got me thinking about when I installed my GPU about 6 years ago (or so), so I would call up some pictures of the units as I was away from the machine. This is what I found: The GPU was purchased first.. it was a Visiontek Radeon HD 2400 AGP Pro 512k.. kind of looks like this: Pretty good card for a (then) 4 year old computer. Apparently the manufacturer specified the card had to be AGP, etc etc.. so it was one of the only options. Fast forward 3 years ago, when I needed a monitor. Found the LG Flatron E2041 at BBuy for about $100 and just loved its size and clarity. So I brought it home and replaced the 17" CRT that came with the computer. Plugged right in and away I went. Had some problems with the drivers though that were never really figured out but what the heck, it works. The connections look like this: And the only cord I had at the time was this: I'll let you figure out what happened next. So.. for the last 3 years I have been running this beautiful HD LG Flatron E2041 on the VGA port from the GPU. My question is now.. do I bother getting a DVI cable? or just keep kicking myself in the bottom for the unbelievably stupid things I am capable of doing? |

Addendum to above:
After crawling around in places that I haven't seen in years, I see that the GPU is DVI-I and the Monitor is DVI-D. Cables come as such or will I need an adapter? Thanks for the help. |

Your dvi-d monitor cable will fit into a dvi-d and a dvi-i port. A lot of video cards have both. Assuming all dual link.

I have installed said DVI-D cable. I used to like this little cheap monitor.. now I love it. There is a noticeable difference between the two cables, even with my old worn out machine.
Wow... who knew? (Sorry, rhetorical question of course. Apparently "everyone except ME" would be the correct answer.)
